Silicon Graphics Visual Workstation 320 review

The Visual Workstations are unique in the system layout. Instead of basing everything around the Pentium CPU, the VW is based around a Cobalt Graphics Processor. The CPU (Pentium II/III) has been demoted to being a geometry engine. This way, a faster CPU can scale performance remarkably as geometry calculations take a leap in performance.

VW’s use a Unified Memory Architecture (UMA). Basically, everything in the system shares memory from one common pool. There’s no such thing as dedicated video memory, system memory and sound memory here. The transfer rate between the Cobalt and the memory is an astounding 3.2 GB’s per second. Six times faster than AGP 2x.

Heatsink reviews @ Overclockers workbench

Ah, now this is a heatsink! This monstrosity is the mother of all heatsinks. Each fin is a full 38mm in length and shaped like an airplane wing for maximum airflow efficiency. The base is a tremendous 7mm thick, able to transmit heat away from the hottest of processors. The aluminum is soft, perhaps even softer than the VEK-12's, however it seems to stick to the drill bit, making it rather difficult to drill. The design allows you to quite easily screw in a 92x25mm fan using 4 long wood screws (such as you would use with any heatsink/fan). This gives you more CFM's of air than any heatsink/fan combination on the market, including all the 3 fan models, at a QUIETER db. The 44cfm model I'm using makes 34db of noise, but there's a louder one that blows 50cfm's.

This seems to be the subject on everybody's minds these days. As you know, I've just tested the Asus V3800 and I'm kind of disappointed by it's performance. I've been doing some additional testing, and this has only confirmed my previous results: consistently slower than Voodoo 3. And then there's another issue: The SGRAM on the Asus TNT2 board is very critical towards overclocking, while the SDRAM on the Voodoo 3 3000 board I've got here runs fine up to clockspeeds of 190 MHz. The only "big" advantage that TNT2 has is the image quality which is certainly better than Voodoo 3. I will get a Diamond Viper V770 in the next few days which uses SDRAM, so I'm quite interested how well overclockable that one will be... More soon.

Elsa Erazor III preview

eriously, it looks like NVidia delivered a solid piece of evolution with the TNT-2 and ELSA wrapped it into a tasty morsel with the Erazor III. Your mileage will vary specifically with the CPU you run, this baby was made to take a serious beating with triangles and I doubt that it will begin to sweat below 600 MHz.

The fun part of my work will be to get a CPU that does push it to the fillrate limit at the low resolution end and not go broke - forget it.

Quantum Fireball Plus KA review

Overall, though low-level benchmarks hint that the drive may push performance into new frontiers, the Quantum Fireball Plus KA turns out to be merely a adept performer that matches its competitors in many areas. Of particular note is the Windows NT performance: when it comes down to it, the Fireball matches the latest Maxtor drive number for number. A formidable feat indeed, something that until now had never been done. In the Win95 arena, though, the drive falls a bit short of the Deskstar/Expert. Noise is also something potential purchasers should consider: it's the loudest ATA drive out there. Even so, the drive delivers excellent performance and is yet another indication that we're entering a "golden age" of sorts where one can't go wrong with the purchase of almost any current ATA drive.

Metabyte PGP ("SLI") Technology update

At this point the leading candidates for the now Alienware owned PGP driverset technology supposedly consist of two Voodoo3 PCI cards working together via PGP, and possibly down the road, two TNT2 PCI cards working together in tandem.

Again, details about the way that the PGP kit's sales and support will be performed by Alienware are still unknown, including whether the innovative company will offer the video packages only with new Alienware PCs, or in a separate format that anyone can call up and order for their own rigs.

A couple of things have been verified though, the PGP cards will need a hardware modification in order to work with the drivers (most likely a simple connector port for the two cards to link). Also, Alienware will have to reach agreements with whatever card's manufacturers they want to use for their kits, whether it be 3dfx, Creative, Diamond or whoever, due again to the hardware change required of the boards. Two Diamond Viper770s would be our personal pick for PGP heaven….

Whatever your thoughts on the legitimacy of 3D sound, I can assure you that it is a giant step up from stereo. The Yamaha Waveforce uses licensed Sensaura HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) algorithms to generate 3D sounds, through any of the A3D, EAX, or DirectSound 3D APIs. In my testing, the A3D support was limited to old A3D 1.0 titles like Jedi Knight. The EAX support, on the other hand, worked with every new title I threw at the card: Myth II, Half-Life, Thief: The Dark Project, you name it. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well this card worked with all EAX titles.

Asus P5A-B mobo review

With this board being a baby AT you also have very few expansion slots. 3 PCI and 2 ISA, one of which is shared, thats bad. If you're looking to run Voodoo2 in SLI then this is obviously not the board for you. If you have a Banshee, TNT, or something of that sort that doesn't take up any PCI slots then it would be a decent selection. Give the PCI's to your modem, soundcard, and possibly a NIC and you're set. Need SCSI and you could really be in a bind (unless you get an ISA NIC)

John Carmack interview

NG: Since Wolfenstein, Id games have almost defined the state of hardcore gaming on the PC. To some extent, Quake III's emphasis on the online, multiplayer aspects of the game continues that trend. But at the same time you're consciously trying to bring the Hasbro crowd — the casual gamers — into this area of gaming that is traditionally the exclusive domain of the hardest of the hardcore gamers. Why?

John: If we thought we could do a game that just catered to the existing online crowd, and we thought there were going to be as many of them as there were that bought Quake II, we might have done a more specialized title. But we don't want to do a niche game. We want to do games that are popular; it's nice to have a game that sells a million copies.

And there are other elements to it. With cyber-athletes and the PGL, there is a future direction there. I don't think it's coming now, or even next year, but as we look forward, making videogames more accessible as a popular sport, moving them into something that more normal people can enjoy and have access to, that's the future. It's important.

8. DN3D didn’t really feature an in-depth background story, does DNF offer more in this aspect, and could you give us a brief introduction on what to expect?

DNF will be highly plot/story driven. You will always know where you are and what you are doing. You will know why you are doing it. You won't just be moving through a bunch of levels shooting stuff. Well, ok, you will be doing that, but you will have an in depth reason as to why. You will also meet colorful character's along the way that you will learn more of the story through. All in all DNF is a quantum leap over what we did in Duke 3D and that's part of what takes so long to make the game.

Need for Speed 4: High stakes aankondiging

Door Femme Taken, 27 april 1999 05:270 reacties, bron: Next Generation Online

EA heeft de pc versie van the Need for Speed 4: High Stakes officieel aangekondigd. Hier de info van NGO:

Electronic Arts has announced the PC version of Need For Speed: High Stakes.

The game will feature two play modes: Career Play and Single Player Arcade.

Career play sports a series of 30 tournaments, Knockouts and High Stakes races in which players compete for virtual cash to purchase cars and repairs and upgrade existing cars. This includs head to head tourneys against the AI where the player must bet one of his or her cars.

Single player arcade mode has five types of gameplay, including Knockout, Tournament and three "Hot Pursuit" modes: "Classic" -- borrowed from the previous NFS title, "Get Away" -- players evade the AI police as long as they can or human cops catch AI speeders, and "Time Trap" -- a timed race in which players try to get to the finish line before getting arrested or arrest speeders before they cross the finish line.

"We are very excited to be delivering PC racers the next iteration in the Need For Speed series," says Peter Royea, product manager at Electronic Arts. "This game will proudly carry on the legacy of the series, which is successfully incorporating innovative and unique game features that cater to what PC gamers demand in a quality racing title."

Release Win98 Second Edition binnenkort

Door Femme Taken, 27 april 1999 05:251 reactie, bron: The Register

As we've mentioned before in these parts, SE's origins as a service pack mean it's a lot more achievable than Win2k, so the appearance of the final RC beta plus stern instructions to shake the last bugs out makes it pretty clear that gold code is close. Microsoft's determination to get it out can be gauged by the fact that there were actually two builds in the last seven days - RC2 build 2185 was posted and shipped around a week ago, and RC3 build 2222 followed it almost immediately.

Gigabyte GA-BX2000 review

ual BIOS is pretty straight forward in concept nature, it's simply a secondary BIOS chip to protect your system from BIOS loss due to mis-flashing it or outside forces. It consits of a primary and secondary BIOS chips, placed right next to eachother on the motherboard, and will utilize the secondary chip if the primary fails. Unlike some misconceptions, it will not allow you to use to two completely different BIOS setups (i.e Award and AMI), and allow you to pick and choose. All the Dual BIOS setup really does is work as backup system in case the unmentionable happens.

Zip 250 drives are backwards-compatible, meaning they can read standard 100MB Zip disks. But if you send a Zip 250 disk to someone who uses a 100MB Zip drive, you're both out of luck. In order to avoid this scenario, Zip 250 owners can either call ahead to see which drive their colleagues have (a major nuisance) or resign themselves to using 100MB media (which all but defeats the point of buying a 250MB drive). The Philips's CD-RW 400 delivers respectable read-write performance and a sturdy 650MB capacity. It transferred 63MB of data to disk in 2 minutes, 20 seconds. That's much faster than Microsolution's external drive, but considerably slower than the two Zips. Though somewhat slow at writing data, the CD-RW is extremely compatible: CD-R media can be read by the more than 200 million CD-ROM drives in operation; CD-RW drives work on all 24x or faster CD-ROM drives. If you're looking for an easy install, however, look elsewhere. The CD-RW utilizes an IDE connection, and unless you're familiar with setting up master-slave devices on an IDE controller, you may want to call a professional installer.

Xitel Storm Platinum Vortex II review

The Xitel Storm Platinum is based on the high-end Aureal SuperQuad design, with both 4-speaker output and a S/PDIF port. The S/PDIF output lets you hook the Storm Platinum to your home stereo equipment through a pure digital line, which is definitely a welcome addition for the home entertainment buff. Xitel is also promoting its use with mini-disc players and MP3 recording. The ability to have 4-speaker support isn't something I had really appreciated until I tried it out. With the proper set of speakers (I use the Midilands for front-end power and the Logitech satellites for background effects) the 3D acoustics are incredible with dual speakers instead of a single set. This 4-speaker feature also puts it firmly in the Diamond MX300's league and ahead of the TB Montego OEM.

John Carmack over Quake III Intel vs Mac

Quake1 was the counterpoint to that. Quake1 had significant amounts of hand tuned asm code for intel, and the PPC version never got as much attention. The PPC version was noticeably slower (you would have to time at 640*480 to avoid unfairly penalizing the mac for lack of low res modes).

So, clearly, hand tuned asm code can make either platform pull ahead. It also shows that the two platforms are at least fairly close in performance. I never said macs were SLOW, just not quite as fast as the best intel systems.

Quake3 doesn't software rasterize, so there isn't any great place for lots of asm code (the great place is in the OpenGL driver). The code is essentially identical on all platforms.

Q3 is definitely faster on a wintel system than a macos system. When the wintel version is released, everyone will be independantly repeating that measurement.

Even this measurement isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison, because the OpenGL driver and 3D card are still a significant variance. The two can be broken out farther: Q3 can be run without 3D output to test just the identical compiled code. Wintel is still faster, although somewhat less so. The OpenGL + 3D card setup can be benchmarked separately on the axis of throughput and fill rate, which show the intel system being significantly faster. I can't break that apart into the two separate components, but I will guess that the OpenGL driver is probably as efficient as the wintel drivers and the performance delta is due to the system interface and the video card. The current mac rage128 cards run at 75 mhz, which is a third slower than the PC cards. AGP is also more than just a faster PCI, it can influence the structure of communication with the card.

K7 vs PIII FPU benchmarks

Door Femme Taken, 27 april 1999 01:150 reacties, bron: The Register

An engineer at AMD has leaked details of internal FPU (floating point unit) Winmarks on the up and coming K7 to The Register.

But at the same time he has said he is disappointed at the management and production problems at the firm.

The engineer, who insists on strict anonymity, said that the K7 running at 500MHz has an FPU Winmark of 2767. That compares to a Pentium III/500 which, he says, has an FPU Winmark of around 2562.

He said that he wanted to make clear that while AMD's technology is impressive, management "always give an optimistic outlook but then turn around and execute poorly."

Voodoo3-3000 review

Door Femme Taken, 27 april 1999 01:040 reacties, bron: iXBT

Nóg een Voodoo3-3000 review, bij iXBT. Er zit wat overclocking-related info in de review:

We tested Voodoo3 3000 operating not only at the nominal frequency (166MHz) but also at the frequency overclocked up to 195MHz (frankly speaking, it's workable even at 198MHz but it is always best to err on the safer side). The screenshot above from the overclocking program shows the mentioned frequency - 195MHz. Taking into account the reliability of Voodoo3 3000 in this case (and we've been testing it for quite a considerable while, however, with additional external cooling), our conclusions will definitely include the results of overclocking.

And what can be said about Voodoo3 3000 working rates? Actually, almost the same thing we said about Voodoo3 2000 some time ago: the speed is impressive, and with 195MHz frequency you will not find its peer now (even if you compare it to ASUS Riva TNT2 graphics card, which has undergone some benchmarks earlier). However, Voodoo3 3000 concedes a bit to ASUS V3800 (on Riva TNT2 chipset, with chipset and memory frequencies - 140/150MHz correspondingly) in Incoming, which serves to check the graphics card work in Direct3D. In all the other benchmarks Voodoo3 3000 is the indisputable leader even in the nominal regime. But we would like to stress it once again that this card demonstrates a tangible speed rise only with very fast CPUs (starting from 450MHz) and at very high resolutions (starting from 1024x768 and up). On the other hand, it (as well as Voodoo3 2000) doesn't allow Voodoo2 SLI to forge into the lead even in case the CPU is not that cool. That's why as far as speed parameters are concerned both Voodoo3 graphics cards can be regarded as a suitable replacement for Voodoo2 SLI. Moreover, the difference between Voodoo3 2000 and 3000 is so insignificant that the 2000 fellow appears to its best advantage.

In Duke Nukem Forever, Duke returns but this time to the setting of Las Vegas, Nevada (strippers will obviously return). Duke's archenemy, Dr. Proton, a massive 7'6" cyborg (who was featured in the first Duke game) has taken over Area 51 and nuked the hell out of Vegas. Utilizing the spacecraft in Area 51, Dr. Proton has contacted and recruited aliens from around the galaxy for his army. Groovy. As if that wasn't enough, he's also reanimated the Area 51 guards, making them mindless Zombies that'll obey his every wink. They've also had a few biomechanic alterations done too (basically they'll end up resembling a cross between Cher and a British Bulldog). Dr. Proton is going for world domination and it'll be up to you (Duke) to stop him in his tracks.

Intel 810 chipset review

Being the first in a series of three mainboard core logic sets, the Intel 810 occupies the value segment of the new lineup. Later in the year, the 810e, and 820 chipsets will debut from Intel, both heralding the introduction of more advanced versions of the 810 geared towards the middle and high-end of the market segment, including Slot-1 machines.

The 810e will specifically add an integrated version of Intel's newest graphics accelerator (named i752) to the 810's basic i740 graphics powerplant.

The powerful 820 (Camino) chipset will be the AGP 4X host for the most advanced

Pentium III CPUs to appear in 1999, the .18mu 133MHz FSB 600+MHz Coppermine parts, and will NOT offer any type of integrated video solution.

For today we're looking at the Intel 810, which according to Intel has been designed to specifically "compliment the Celeron processor". What this means is basically a host of changes to the older 440EX and 440ZX chipsets, including support for the upcoming 100MHz FSB Celerons (beginning with the 500MHz variant of the series in late summer 99) and complete compatibility for the new UltraDMA/66 IDE storage peripheral communication format.

Nieuwe versie SoftFSB

Notable features:
- 256-bit DualBus architecture
- 32-bit color support at 2056 X 1536 resolution
- Supports OpenGL, DirectX 6.0
- VCQ2 (Vibrant Color Quality)

Matrox claims the more powerful G400 MAX has a 30% increase in raw speed over its little brother and can achieve peak 3D fill rates “in excess of 333 Mtexels/second”. It will also sport an incredibly high 360MHz UltraSharp RAMDAC that can operate at resolutions up to 2048 X 1536 at 32bpp with an 85Mhz refresh rate.
