Software-update: VMware Fusion 2.0 build 116369

VMware heeft versie 2.0 build 116369 van zijn virtualisatie applicatie Fusion uitgebracht. Met deze applicatie kunnen er via een virtuele machine diverse besturingssystemen op de hostcomputer draaien. Zo kunnen er Windows-programma's binnen Mac OS X uitgevoerd worden die zich via de Unity-functie als normale programma's gedragen. Daarnaast worden natuurlijk ook andere x86-besturingssystemen ondersteund zoals verschillende Linux-distributies en Solaris. De vrijgegeven lijst met vernieuwingen voor versie 2.0 build 116369 ziet er als volgt uit:

VMware Fusion 2.0 is available free to owners of VMware Fusion 1. All existing virtual machines created with VMware Fusion 1 are fully supported in VMware Fusion 2. You will not have to reinstall your virtual machines after upgrading to VMware Fusion 2. VMware Fusion 2.0 has a large number of enhancements, including:

Multiple Snapshots and AutoProtect:
  • Save your virtual machine in any number of states, and return to those states at any time
  • New Snapshot UI to help you manage all the snapshots you have saved

Application Sharing:

Wat ik me nu al een hele lange tijd afvraag....
Waarom kun je wel Windows op VMware Fusion draaien, maar niet Mac OS X op VMware Workstation...

Nouja, iniedergeval leuke verbeteringen! Hogere resoluties en meerdere schermen!!! ^^
Heeft te maken met licenties en hardware ondersteuning.
Maar damn zeg, die gozer van vmware zijn wel flink bezig geweest.

Ben verbaasd dat dit niet in de vorige versie zat.
Ze hebben eens goed naar Parellels gekeken. ;)

Nu nog de generieke printer laten werken onder Vista X64, in de beta crashed die alleen maar.
Ik draai VMWare Fusion 2 beta al geruime tijd, en ben er zeer over te spreken.
Vooral die mappen/folders in Windows en OSX met elkaar mappen is ideaal! Voorheen zat ik steeds via "netwerk" mappen iets over te kopieren.
Ook werkt de drag&drop functie goed, waardoor je simpel bestanden van de ene desktop naar de andere kunt slepen.

De reden waarom Mac OSX niet onder VMware op een Windows computer draait is, doordat OSX een encryptiechip nodig heeft op het moederbord van de computer.
Dit is natuurlijk wel te omzeilen via de kernel te patchen.
Niet noodzakelijk. Je kunt op een pc simpelweg EFIv8 installeren en je harde schijf met de OS X installatie schijf als GUID partitioneren. Op die manier kun je, mits je normale hardware ondersteund wordt, een retail OS X dvd gebruiken. Geen patches, geen hacks, gewoon werken. Of de virtuele hardware van VMware native ondersteund wordt door OS X weet ik niet, maar het kan dus wel. Of het ook mag is een ander verhaal :)

Dit moet dus ook best kunnen op een VM, met een beetje moeite. Ik heb het gewoon native gedaan. Enige "nadeel" is wel dat je gebonden bent aan XP of Vista 64-bit, omdat dat de enige Windows versies zijn met EFI en GUID ondersteuning.

Mac OS X x86 vereist:
- EFI : Vervanger van BIOS, valt te emuleren, zie bijvoorbeeld rEFI
- TPM chip, trusted platform module, een speciaal chippeke om illigaal gebruik te belemeren. Voor zover ik weet is de chip niet gekraakt, en deze kan dus niet gememuleerd worden. Wel is OS X gekraak, en illigale OS X versies zijn zo aangepas zodanig ze geen TPM chip mee vereisen.

OS X is al goed virtualiseerbaar sinds tiger. (dankzij deze hacks)
Met PCEFI heb je vrijwel genoeg. Je hoeft alleen nog maar de drivers (kexts) te zoeken voor je mobo en je bent klaar. Uiteraard: mits je een compatibel mobo hebt (lees: intel chipset).

Overigens heb ik EFIX (www.efi-x.com), dat maakt het allemaal NOG wat makkelijker :)
Eindelijk, vmware fusion is volwassen geworden :p Vlug testen of ik nu ook echt games (en andere 3D applicaties) kan gebruiken in een virtuele pc (de enige reden waarvoor ik bootcamp gebruik)
