Wired News over Amiga ontslagen

Amiga Inc. is continuing the great tradition that has plagued the computer almost since its inception: Its president is out after less than a year.

[...]Laser suspects Collas was pushed out for talking too much. Collas posted regularly on the Amiga newsgroup comp.sys.amiga.misc, and posted updates regularly to the Amiga site. Then, in late August, Amiga Inc. issued a statement that it would focus on its work and not be communicating with the public anymore. One week later, Collas was gone.

"Collas was trying to be at the same time open and friendly with the Amiga community and at the same time not show his hand to any competition," Laser said.

AMD Athlon-500 review

It feels good to finally see some competition in the CPU arena. Intel is no longer the title holder for the fastest x86 CPU in the world. Looks like AMD is back in the CPU business and judging from the Athlon's performance, they do mean serious business. Although the processor is top notched, AMD do make it affordable and its pricing should be very competitive with Intel's latest Pentium-III processors. It will not be surprising to see Intel lower the prices of their processors in a bid to weed out the competition. On the other hand, I believe AMD should keep their focus on improving their yields, thus keeping the cost low enough to compete. As for the rest of us, we will just have to wait and hope that AMD will pull out of this difficult time. All AMD supporters, three cheers for AMD!!

As you can see ATA66 holds its own against the more expensive and highly rated U2W drives. In fact in some of the disk benchmarking tests, the RAID setup beats out the U2W drives. One thing that that was interesting was the PCI bus slider test. From set to full and none, the numbers did not change too much to see any performance increase or decrease. It seems that IDE RAID may be the next best thing for people wanting performance like a SCSI system but can afford it. And so, the FastTrak66 is defiantly a great card that offers limitless options for performance buffs.

Abit BE6 review

ABIT mainboards shine in the arena of overclocking. The 2Mbit Award BIOS chip harbors ABIT's famed SoftMenu II BIOS setup. As discussed above, the BE6 has a wide range of selectable FSB options. My favorite being the 110MHz bus setting, I used a Celeron 300A that wouldn't do anything above 464MHz (4.5 X 103). Now with the BE6, it's running at 495MHz @ 2.1v using the 110MHz bus speed as the C300A just won't run at 112MHz FSB ! This should give overclockers the option to really squeeze the last bit of overclockability from their CPUs.

Intel Celeron en PIII prijsdaling op 12 september

Door Femme Taken, 4 september 1999 23:266 reacties, bron: The Register

Distributors have received notice from Intel that the price cuts will come the week of the 12th of September, on selected members of the Pentium III and Celeron desktop family.

At the same time, Intel quietly lowered the price of its 366MHz in the PPGA packaging on the 29th of August.

The move must be seen as attacking AMD's products, and at the same time paving the way for the introduction of CuMine technology in October and Camino i820 introductions in late September.

As yet we have no specific details of which desktop processors will receive the cut-price treatment of 12 September, but will post them as soon as we find out.

Geen Rambus support in Intel server mobo's

Door Femme Taken, 4 september 1999 23:251 reactie, bron: The Register

Over the last six months, a team of Intel engineers have attempted to design a Carmel chipset based motherboard for a quad server but that project has now been abandoned.

Instead, Chipsetzilla will now use the Reliance chipset for its quad processor, which will use DRAM, instead.

As reported here from Computex in June, engineers are doubtful that large arrays of Rambus RIMMs will ever run at 400MHz (800MT/s). Board firms will also have trouble producing reliable boards to run at 400MHz, the sources added.

One of the problems is that Rambus technology are microwave circuits and engineers at mobo manufacturers do not have the technical skill to produce such designs.

NSA security backdoor in Windows?

The chief scientist for a Canadian cryptography and security firm has identified a back door into Microsoft's cryptography system. He charges that it may be intended to grant access to data on any Windows user's system to the U.S. National Security Agency. Andrew Fernandes of Cryptonym has investigated Microsoft's "CryptoAPI" architecture for security flaws and has found that in Windows NT 4's Service Pack 5, the company neglected to remove annotations identifying the security components, according to a Cryptonym statement.

Apparently there are two keys used by Windows, one of which belongs to Microsoft and allows the secure loading of encryption services, but the second was annotated in the code with the letters NSA. Fernandes' investigation builds on the work of encryption experts Nicko van Someren and Adi Shamir, according to the company statement. The holder of the second key, if it is indeed the National Security Agency, could easily load unauthorized security services on any copy of Microsoft Windows, according to Cryptonym. A Microsoft spokesman called Cryptonym's report "completely false."

"The key in question is a Microsoft key; it's not held or shared with any party including the NSA," said Jim Cullinan of Microsoft. He added that Microsoft has continually opposed the U.S. government's key escrow proposal, which aimed to give the government the ability to decipher encrypted computer data. Microsoft's Windows operating systems provide encryption to Windows applications via the Microsoft CryptoAPI (application programming interface), which allows these applications to take advantage of the security provided by cryptography services from various independent software vendors, explains Austin Hill, president of privacy software firm Zero-Knowledge Systems. Only Microsoft, through the single key that was originally thought to exist, could certify cryptography toolkits.

Who Can You Trust?

"Microsoft's security architecture is a 'trust-me' solution," Hill says. "I would plead with Microsoft to start taking security and privacy of their consumers seriously," Hill says. "That means open security systems reviewed by peers and experts. They can't continue with 'trust me' when clearly they haven't earned that trust."

Cryptonym's statement maintains that there is a flaw in the way the cryptography verification occurs, which means that users can eliminate or replace the NSA key without modifying Microsoft's original components. A program demonstrating this can be found on Cryptonym's Web site. Fernandes could not immediately be reached in person.

AMD Athlon 600 review

As reported in so many other Athlon Reviews, the Athlon performs equally well in business apps, posting some of the highest ever scores in Winbench 99. Our tests confirmed the scores posted in ZDNet's Athlon Review Benchmarks (the creator of Winbench 99 and many other benchmarking programs) which compare the Athlon to the PIII.

How impressed was I with the Athlon Processor? Enough to permanently place the "Optimized for 3D NOW!" logo on our front page graphic. And no, AMD is not paying us to do so.

You've seen that the Athlon processor rightly deserves the Top Spot in the Processor wars. With the fastest gaming performance, fastest business performance, and extremely attractive system and component pricing, it's easy to see why we here at RIVA 3D have awarded the Athlon Processor only the second ever Killer Hardware Award. If you want the fastest there is, then you definitely want the Athlon from AMD.

Check Riva 3D voor de rest!

Intel Developer Forum '99 verslag

According to reports leaked last week by several online publications, Coppermine will be released as a five CPU package sometime in October. The package, as described by the groups that broke the story, is as follows:

- Likely Launch Coppermine CPUs

P3-500/100
P3-533/133
P3-550/100
P3-600/133
P3-667/133 [break]En wat over nVidia's GeForce 256[/break] Some show attendees we spoke with offered their fresh opinions on NVIDIA's new monster, and were principally concerned about the somewhat unimpressive pixel fill rate estimate of just 480 megapixels per second for a chip that has been in research and development for over 18 months. At a core clock speed of just 120MHz, it's easy to see how these issues could be brought to the surface so quickly.

Another question we heard mentioned frequently was why the GeForce 256 doesn't support texture compression routines in hardware, only offering a software level of support currently. This would seemingly be a no-brainer now that the impressive technology, originally developed by S3, has been officially adopted by Microsoft in DirectX 7.0.

These questions will likely be answered as more information is released by NVIDIA on the new part over the next few weeks. [break]3dfx kwam ook even aan bod:[/break] 3dfx was present at IDF, although they weren't making as big a splash as their principal competitor across the aisle.

They were happy however to talk about their upcoming T-Buffer technology to Sharky Extreme, as well as teasing us with early info regarding their next-generation 3D accelerator's power levels. They were also very clear and open about comparisons between the GeForce 256 and "Napalm" (their next part's code name, and no, the next part will NOT be named Voodoo4):

"I scoff at 480 Megapixels per second."

Meer info vind je hier.

Nieuwe Powerstrip & Performance Tuner released

Designed to compliment the native Windows Display Properties sheet under Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT, the PowerStrip combines advanced, multi-monitor API support with extensive programmable hardware support. A simple toolbar and menu that pops up from the system tray provides configuration and fast access to your favorite display settings, incremental enlargement and reduction of desktop size, comprehensive color calibration controls with gamma hotheys, the ability to associate specific applications with custom display settings, graphics system diagnostics, flexible font controls, extensive hotkey and screen saver support, a database of over 1000 monitors, and on-the-fly color depth, resolution and refresh rate switching. Additionally, the PowerStrip includes direct hardware support for many chips, permitting an unprecedented degree of control over your display sub-system, particularly under Windows NT.

Performance Tuner - essentially the forthcoming PowerStrip/GX clock controls spun off as a stand-alone utility - is now available for downloading. The program allows you to define and save performance "profiles", which consist of specific graphics engine and memory clock speeds, driver vsync switches, etc., and then recall and activate them in real-time, without restarting Windows. In a system with a MGA-G200 PCI card, Voodoo3 3000 AGP card, and Voodoo2, you can, for example, define a profile which sets the G200 to idle at 75/100MHz, disable the Voodoo2 as a D3D device, pump up the V3 to 175/175MHz and enable enhanced 22-bit filtering, and then activate these settings from a simple popup menu on the Windows taskbar. You can latter return everything to cooler, safe settings, keeping the extra stress on your graphics cards to a minimum. It's the ultimate hard-core gamer's tool for squeezing the most out of your graphics subsystem - with minimum fuss and only when you need to. Most new graphics chips are supported, under Windows NT4 as well as Windows 95/98.

Matrox Millennium G400 32MB review

DualHead is a new term to the video card market, and simply put it means the ability to have two outputs on a video card. As you saw in the pictures of the G400, the DualHead connectors are simply two monitor outputs on the video card. One is the primary, the other is the secondary. This technology is one of the most exciting features of the G400 next to bump mapping. The DualHead design allows 8 different configurations, ranging from two monitors showing the same thing, one monitor and a TV, or even LCD panels. What good is having two monitors or a monitor and a TV though? The theory is that you can watch DVD movies on full screen on your TV, or another monitor, while continuing to type away at MS Word, or surfing the web on the other monitor. There won't be much of a slowdown at all either. One of the more interesting ideas is with MS Combat Flight Simulator where you can have one monitor with your normal view, and the other monitor showing a window or a rearview mirror view. Although this only works with that specific game, the future could be bright for more support like this in other games.

Another fun thing to do with the DualHead is being able to use one monitor for Photoshop, while using the other monitor to zoom in on the image at a specific area while still showing the regular size on the other monitor. The options are endless, and only your imagination will limit what you can do with the G400's DualHead capabilities. This is way cool.

Seagate Barracuda ATA 28GB review

To begin with, I installed Internet Explorer 5.0 from the hard drive. This was easily the fastest installation of any Microsoft program I've ever experienced. On my old 6GB 5400RPM drive (EIDE, mind you), I usually had to sit and wait for 5-10 minutes for everything to be setup. With the Barracuda ATA, installation was done in about two minutes. File transfers accross the drive were a lot faster than my older 6GB drive. Unfortunately, I did not get benchmark numbers for that drive, as it is now dedicated to Linux. Rest assured, however, the speedup alone is more than worth the price of this drive. Games like Quake II load very quickly and, all other things being equal, with this drive, you'll be in the game before most other players. For my Ultra ATA/66 article, I did some ATA/33 vs. ATA/66 comparison benchmarks, which are applicable here.

KinetiZ7’s AWARD BIOS can detect CPU temperature and fan speed, the fan speed of the chassis, as well as the system’s electric voltage. Furthermore, DIYers will be thrilled to know that KinetiZ7 can support a frequency of up to 200MHz! It is to be noted however that processor modules determine processor to system speed ratio. KinetiZ7 system’s internal memory can take up to 768MB. KinetiZ7 also has 2xAGPwith which users can experience 3D games as well as software with a vivid 3D effect.

In addition, the KinetiZ7 from Legend QDI has other special features such as Wakeup on External Modem, hardware management and PS/2 Keyboard power-on, and supports ATA 66. Furthermore, all I/O ports can be Enabled / Disabled by BIOS setup.

New K7 Motherboard

Q: What is your take on Nvidia's decision to move to on-board T&L?

A: It is certainly an interesting position to take, but somewhat not surprising given the background and experience of many of their architects and engineers. I think what was surprising about the specifics of the GeForce 256 is how they seemingly ignored new rasterization features (cube environment mapping excepted) and certainly ignored substantial fill-rate improvements. As a result, it is our belief that they have created a very unbalanced part with impressive geometry capabilities but not enough fill-rate to really take advantage of it.

Q: Is this product [Voodoo4] going to be faster than GeForce 256?

As I mentioned previously, there are numerous performance characteristics which interact to form the sustainable performance of a 3D accelerator. Nvidia has focused heavily on the geometry bottleneck with the GeForce 256, almost at the exclusion of substantially increasing fill-rate performance. In the very near term, we have gone down almost exactly the opposite route, focusing much more heavily on fill-rate performance. As a result, as gamers want to run their games at high resolutions and 32bpp color depth, we believe hands down we will have a faster product than GeForce 256 across the majority of games.

T&L acceleration is very interesting but it will take at least another 4 to 6 months before we see anything that really uses it. Older games will see zero benefit from this unit with the exception of some OpenGL based games. But these games are not prepared for T&L they will thus only run at higher frame-rates. Because of the inefficiency of the rendering core, it's highly probable that the fill-rate will limit the performance of the accelerator most of the time. This hard limit will allow competitors to come into the market with faster products and only the fastest product will be sold (highest hard limit wins) so being first is not necessary best. The actual uses of lighting acceleration remains questionable since lightmaps deliver better visual quality and flexibility.

Merced vs Athlon performance

Door Femme Taken, 4 september 1999 02:2815 reacties, bron: The Register

According to the report between that first boot and Intel's Craig Barrett showing it, engineers worked flat out to show a stable demonstration at the Intel Developer Forum.

So far, and in its early stages, it is as fast as AMD's Athlon using the SpecINT benchmark but shows far better performance in SpecFP.

If the debug and testing stage goes to schedule, full production will start around this time in the year 2000.

Merced will initially appear with 1Mb, 2Mb and 4Mb on die SRAM cache, but our sources suggest that when it is shrunk to .18 micron, which will happen at release time, Intel is likely to achieve 1GHz speeds.

Door Femme Taken, 4 september 1999 02:280 reacties, bron: The Register

Shares in Apple yesterday hit their highest price point for eight years, peaking at $71.44 before sliding slightly to close at $70.56.

An today, the rise continued, leaving the stock at the end of trading at $73.5, up $2.94, the highest price the shares have ever commanded.

The last time Apple's stock closed above $70 -- it peaked at $72.75 -- was back in April 1991 when John Sculley was still in charge, the company was preparing to launch its System 7 OS, and development of the first PowerBooks was proceeding towards a launch in the autumn.

Incidentally, the lowest point it reached was $13.00 in July 1997 when Apple was well into the red and CEO Gil Amelio was struggling to turn the company around -- and effectively getting fired for it.

Samsung maakt dikke winst, DRAM prijzen blijven hoog

Door Femme Taken, 4 september 1999 02:274 reacties, bron: The Register

Minder...

Samsung cited last July's power cut in Taiwan as the chief reason for the increase in DRAM prices -- it reduced the world DRAM supply by around two per cent at a time of much-increased demand. Samsung also believed moves to small fabrication processes have also limited supply.

The higher prices are likely to continue for some time, said Chung -- in part due to ongoing demand for low-cost consumer PCs.

Apple maakt G3 -> G4 upgrading onmogelijk

Door Femme Taken, 4 september 1999 02:270 reacties, bron: The Register

According to the MacInTouch Web site, Apple's Tech Exchange bulletin board was bombarded with complaints about the fix, introduced in the G3's most recent firmware update (see Apple crippled G3 Macs to bar PPC G4 upgrades).

Apple subsequently pulled the discussion thread, but before it did so, an Apple employee wrote: "Notes to consider after reading this [thread] include the fact that there is no shipping or announced PowerPC G4 processor upgrade from Apple or, as far as we know, any other company and we're not aware of any documentation that indicates any Power Macintosh G3 computer was marketed as being upgradeable to a PowerPC G4 processor."

In other words, G3 owners were wrong to assume their machine was upgradeable simply because previous models have been. Or, more bluntly, if you now want new Mac processor technology, you'll just have to buy a new Mac.

In today's world, 3dfx and S3 are making their own cards, and NVIDIA is the veritable "last man standing". Now that the other main players have cut off their supply of 3D chips (and Videologic seems content to produce the Neon 250 cards), NVIDIA is in the driver's seat, with large companies like Creative Labs, Guillemot, Acer, Leadtek and ASUS beating down the door for GeForce 256 chips. With the supply of viable 3D chips firmly in their corner, NVIDIA has all the power and is free to make chip allocation deals, cultivate and maintain vendor relationships, and price their new chips according to market demand. OEM deals are also a bit weighted towards NVIDIA, since they have more companies out there trying to sign deals. If they're charging $25 a chip, I don't think they really care if it's Creative Labs, ELSA or Guillemot that makes the deal with Compaq.

Another area that this approach has its benefits is in the retail sector. Check out a PC store and see what's on the video card shelves; the Voodoo3's, maybe one or two Savage4 cards, along with quite a few TNT2 and TNT2 Ultra boards. This can create the illusion of greater market penetration and industry influence for the general consumer. It also serves the purpose of creating a card for every market. There are inexpensive 16 MB TNT2 boards, 32 MB TNT2 for those with more cash, and the TNT2 Ultra boards for the high-end market. Between these 3 zones there are differing TNT2 solutions in both multimedia features (like the ELSA 3D glasses), game bundles and other extras that help separate each card from the competition. 3dfx and S3 would have to pump out a dizzying array of variants to match the level of TNT2/TNT2 Ultra differentiation, and NVIDIA didn't spend a cent developing or marketing any of these products.

Viewsonic GS771 review

As far as 17" monitors go, the GS771 is "above average" enough to warrant a higher price than many peers. It is not a high-end monitor, but certainly is quite a performer in its own niche. So for most typical PC users, this monitor is a good investment. Personally, I would definitely cough out more money on a monitor. Afterall, it is the window into your computer and is not something you have to upgrade often.
