Redhat 5.2 review

ne of the greatest barriers to Linux's "world domination"--and most objective Linux fans will admit this--is the ease (or, more accurately, the lack thereof) of installation.  Basically, the argument goes, if you want Grandma to throw out her Windows or MacOS box (or perhaps, not the box, just its OS), you've got to make Linux installation easy enough that a grandma could do it.  While I don't know many grandmas that go around installing their Windows 9x or MacOS, at the very least, an easy installer is a worthy goal.  After all, until there are major system manufacturers distributing Linux boxes, the fact is that somebody is going to have to install Grandma's Linux.

Since the person installing Grandma's Linux will probably be Grandson or Granddaughter, the next question to ask is how easy it is for somebody who has more computer experience than Grandma to install Linux.  Before Grandma can be converted to Linux, Grandson or Granddaughter needs to be converted.  So let's reformulate our question: How easy is it to install Linux when you've got plenty of non-Linux computing experience?

The installer in the Red Hat 5.2 Linux distribution is widely regarded as the best Linux installer out there, so that's the one I'll be going with.  First, a bit on my credentials, so you can understand where I'm coming from.  I've been messing around with computers since my parents bought the house a PCjr, and I've been supporting Microsoft OS and MacOS machines since 1992.  I hated Windows 3.1 when it first came out because I didn't see what it really added over DOS except ugly pictures.  I made the switch to Windows 95, however, and I now use Windows NT 4.0 as my primary (read, for everything except games) OS.  I've used UNIX, but not for anything more complicated than email, news, file transfer, and a bit of Web page creation and serving.  Basically, I know what I'm doing around computers, but *NIX is more or less a new world for me.

Tennmax cooler review

owering up the system, it worked (and this doesn't surprise no one!) most readily but best of all, quietly. Placing my palm near the fan, I can definitely feel a sizeable amount of air flow generated between the cards.

Since I'm not equipped with digital thermometers whatever, I had to perform the really straightforward "finger" test. To allow me to complete my physical test on the fan, I left the PC running Quake II demo for about 10 minutes before attempting to touch the card. The card only feels mildly warm but it is a great difference from the literally HOT card when it was without the LasagnaX (Read my Creative Banshee Review to fine out). And best of all, now you will be able to caress the chip without fearing your flesh cooking off.

I'm very happy so far that there had been quite a significant/tangible temperature difference from the past. So we proceed to benchmarking the card with the added "turbo cooler".

Pentium III preview

Well, guess this wrapps up the preview for now until the Pentium IIIs or Katmais get launched in April or May. Pricing for these chips are expected to start at around US$800 which in my opinion is very high for the average user. Of course there is still the Celerons but who would want to look at a common MMX processor once the new 70 KNI instructions come out ? Only god knows... ;) Thanks for reading.

ntel Corp. said today it is keeping the Pentium name for its next generation of microprocessors that it plans to launch in March, nearly three months ahead of rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Formerly code-named Katmai, Intel's Pentium III microprocessors will include the Katmai New Instructions, plus additional features such as memory streaming enhancements and Intel's Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) technology, applied to floating-point instructions.

The combined features will offer additional performance enhancements beyond simple increases in clock speed. A spokesman for Intel, Santa Clara, Calif., confirmed that the chips would be released at initial clock speeds of 450 and 500 MHz. The “Tanner” chip for workstations and servers will be known as the Pentium III Xeon, and will initially run at 500 MHz, he said.

AMD, meanwhile, was unable to confirm the launch date of its own next-generation chip-the K7-which is scheduled to take place on June 23, according to industry and OEM sources. A spokesman for Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD said that date didn't sound right, and would check on it. Other sources close to AMD said that date was under consideration, but had yet to be finalized.

To date, industry sources have not learned the speeds or prices of the K7 chips. However, they have said that the K7 will ship with either 512 kilobytes or 1 megabyte of off-chip level 2 cache, running at either half or a third the speed of the microprocessor.

K6-3 release date

I'm a bit confused. Tom Pabst put up an article saying that the K6-3 won't be coming out until April, based on the info he has which says that samples won't be going out until February, making the currently rumoured February release difficult. But this perplexes me. If samples haven't yet started going out, from where did Anand and Thresh get their samples? I conversed with someone at AMD at one point who seemed to be of the opinion that they didn't get the samples from AMD. I'd love to get to the bottom of all this, and I hope that Tom's mistaken. But if anyone can tell me either way, please do so!

Carmageddon II review

While the 3D engine—now accelerated via Direct3D and Glide, but restricted to a fixed resolution—is still a bit poky and the viewing distance too short, the new polygonal pedestrians turn a sick game into one that somehow manages to be even sicker. Revel as the pedestrians beg for mercy while you pile-drive them into a wall. Grab a powerup that gives them big heads or makes them dance uncontrollably, blissfully unaware of their impending demise. Hope for a "Dismemberfest" powerup so you can splatter and decapitate to your heart's content. Kill dogs, cows, moose, sheep and God knows what else as you get in touch with your inner Manson (that's Charles, or maybe Marilyn). The car models are also more complex, with parts that fly off and are strewn about the landscape.

IBM To Make K7's ?

Door Tweakers.net Nieuwsposter, 12 januari 1999 18:490 reacties, bron: The AMDZone

Although on the face of it IBM and AMD have no cross licensing deal on x.86 technology, it now appears that Big Blue will make K7 chips.

The complex cross licensing technology on copper technology -wich exclusively prevents Intel from using it- is likely to lead to boards from IBM later in the year.

Unreal TNT fix coming

Epic are no way decreasing their support for Glide or any other 3D API in Unreal or UT.

We're just excited because Tim has been hard at work on a new driver for the last couple of days, so that those of you with TNT cards (and possibly other cards) will be able to play Unreal the way it should be played - quickly, reliably and damn good looking.

We're working with lots of hardware manufacturers (we hope to get a look at the Voodoo3 soon!). We are definitely not specializing in one technology - we want Unreal technology to run well on LOTS of different hardware! We're just glad that Tim's finally got robust, reliable performance on the TNT. That's all. Don't read any more into Brandon's post.

Microsoft has collected $10 billion in overcharges to consumers over the past three years thanks to its monopoly on the PC operating system, consumer groups alleged in a study released Friday.

As a result, officials of the Consumer Federation of America and other consumer groups said, the company could face a barrage of class-action suits designed to recoup those supposed overcharges if courts find Microsoft liable in the government antitrust suit under way here.

The report was prepared by the CFA, the Media Access Project and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

"We think those overcharges should be returned," said Mark Cooper, research director of the CFA, who estimates the overcharges amount to some $35 to $45 per computer.

Jamie Love, director of the Consumer Project on Technology, called the overcharges a "tax" on PC users.

Info over OS/2 Warp 5

Another source close to IBM was able to shed light on the negotiations. The initiative came from Stardock, whose original proposal included "Linuxising" OS/2 by including open source development tools. "Linux has the momentum, but it's nowhere near an end user platform -- it doesn't have a system-wide clipboard for example," the source said. "Whereas OS/2 is more complete in many ways, but isn't perceived to have that momentum."

However a true open source release of OS/2 -- recently advocated by Ralph Nader's Consumer Technology Project -- was rendered impossible because of royalty issues. "Microsoft still makes a lot of money from OS/2, large parts of OS/2 networking and Presentation Manager means Microsoft can collect royalties. IBM used to make some bad deals", said the source.

Another strong reason for IBM producing a new client version is the approaching Y2K deadline. The current recommended solution of Warp 4 plus FixPack 3 onwards -- is complex, and one release would consolidate the fixes.

WWII Flightsim shootout

All right! Listen up, desk jockeys! Some say that the Bureau of Budgeting and Acquisition Analysis is an easy ride; that we aren't doing our part to win this war for Uncle Sam. Well it's time to prove that's not the case. The hottest season of the Software Buying Wars is upon us, and it's high time we showed folks on the home front just how important our job is.

Oh sure, there was a time when World War II flight sims were few enough so that an armchair prop jock could buy every title as soon as it appeared on the shelves. But times have changed, and besides, neither money nor CPUs grow on trees. The past few months have seen the war heat up big time, and now the War Department isn't facing a simple decision to procure a new flight sim, or even choose between the top two. No sir. This season we have three--count 'em, three--top-of-the-line flight sims covering the same European theater: European Air War, WWII Fighters, and Combat Flight Simulator. Somebody has to get in there and sort 'em out.

THE ALLEGATIONS WERE shocking: For years, Microsoft has systematically distorted its profit figures in an effort to consistently beat Wall Street expectations and keep its stock price steadily rising. The false reports would violate SEC regulations, and amount to outright fraud.

More shocking was the source of the allegations: Microsoft's chief of internal audits, Charlie Pancerzewski, who reported directly to the company's chief financial officer.

Most shocking of all was what happened to Pancerzewski when he reported the suspicious bookkeeping to his supervisors, Microsoft CFO Mike Brown and chief operating officer Bob Herbold, in the spring of 1995. Soon afterward, Pancerzewski--who for nearly five years had received stellar performance evaluations--received his first-ever unsatisfactory one, and was eventually forced to resign.

Two months ago, Microsoft quietly settled a lawsuit containing these allegations, filed in 1997 by Pancerzewski under the Whistleblowers Protection Act. The auditor claimed he was wrongfully terminated after telling his supervisors that Microsoft might be breaking securities and tax laws. The lawsuit made its tortuous way through several rounds of pretrial motions until last fall, when US District Judge Carolyn Dimmick denied Microsoft's final plea for summary judgment, finding credible evidence that Microsoft may have violated SEC rules, as Pancerzewski alleged. Shortly thereafter, Microsoft and Pancerzewski settled out of court. Terms of the agreement were sealed, but one source who claims familiarity with the case says that Microsoft paid Pancerzewski $4 million.

A Fremont, California, company has released a new chipset that would allow set-top boxes to play MP3 audio files, the popular but controversial format used to distribute music on the Internet.

ESS Technology said its new chipset for set-top box manufacturers will help MP3 become a standard component of consumer audio electronics.

"We believe that we can deliver this function to the mass market at a significant cost advantage," said Johnston Chen, vice president of consumer products for ESS, which develops semiconductor systems for PC and consumer markets worldwide. The company, which announced its plans Friday, did not name manufacturers that plan to use the chipset.

Celery Report #2

As most of you probably already know, there are reports everywhere of the finicky nature of the BH6 and it's diet as it relates to RAM. I can verify first hand that these reports are true because, during the course of testing the Celery, I've encountered these problems myself.

A couple of examples: One problem I ran in to was with 128MB modules that are only recognized as 64MB. The RAM worked perfectly stable as a 64MB and was recognized at full capacity on another brand of board. At the time, I didn't think to note the brand and type so, sadly, I don't have that information for you.

Another problem, and this one was reported by a customer, is that when 2 modules of 64MB are run at the same time, the board de-stabilizes. Running either one as a single makes the problem disappear. These modules are on their way to me, so when I have them, I'll report on product and chip number.

I've also found that one BH6 may not like a module, while another works fine with the same stick. This happened with a 64MB module of Micron "Elite" 8T. I placed it on a board for testing and it just layed their and beeped at me. Thinking I had a bad stick, I tried another one; same thing. I tried a third, same thing.

Sub $1000 Alpha's

Last week, Shannon knows Compaq exclusively revealed benchmarks and other details of Alphas to be launched over the next few weeks. But now documents seen by The Register give clear details about how Compaq, and by implication AMD, will position their products again Intel Slot IIs, the Willametee platform and, eventually Merced. According to the documents, there is now a good opportunity for the Alpha to fill the $0-$20K segments of the market with uni- and dual versions of the 21264 processors. The assumption, according to Compaq and its partners, is that there will be a gradual penetration of the NT space from 10 per cent currently to 30 per cent by the year 2001.

But it is not just at the server level that Alpha could win, according to the documents. Desktops, too, will be targeted by Compaq and its partners. Later this month, the market will see dual 21264 Alpha processors in the 600/650MHz range, with designs aimed at the $1.5K to $2.5K level using a PCA 57 design and running at 600MHz. In the second quarter of this year, Compaq and its partners will go further and introduce 700MHz versions of the 21264, with 667MHz designs aimed at the lower end of the market.

According to the documents, in the second half of this year we will see Tsunami motherboards, followed by AMD Uni designs and then Poseidon dual designs. While AMD refused to comment on its future plans, one source close to the company said: "Alpha and AMD do share the same bus and there will be, at least, dual capability in the future." Futher, the documents say that more 264 based motherboard information is being shared between Compaq and AMD, with a daughter card strategy en route. This will include 2Mb late write cache, an Alpha 21264 and two options -- one with 1Mb and 2Mb cache, similar to Slot One, while the other will use DDR cache of 2Mb and 4Mb, similar to the Xeon platform.

Uitslag C!T Trofee 1999

Totaal Trofee:

Starsiege: Tribes review

Door Femme Taken, 12 januari 1999 15:490 reacties, bron: webmagix

3DGaming.net heeft een review van Starsiege: Tribes, een multiplayer only first person shooter:

have been a FPS multiplayer addict ever since Doom II, and Starsiege: Tribes is by far the most fun I've ever had in a multiplayer game. There are so many things to do: fly vehicles, place turrets, control turrets, attack enemy buildings, repair your own buildings, place pulse sensors, place sensor jammers, command your team, help heavy teammates aim, snipe, defend, plan big attacks, drop mines… with all of these features at the players disposal, everybody will create their own strategy.

There are 3 types of player classes you can choose from: heavy, medium, and light armor. All of the armor come with a jetpack enabling you to fly for a short period of time, but don't expect to soar over buildings if you're in the heavy armor. You will always start with light armor, but you may change all you want if you use your base's Inventory machine. At the Inventory machine you can equip yourself with any weapon, backpack, or item. Certain items can only be used with certain types of armor, so there is always balance in what you choose. If you find yourself constantly spending a lot of time choosing the same armor/weapons, there is an option to set your current setup as a favorite, so it will give you everything you want with one click. It's a very innovative feature, and it helps you get equipped quickly for certain scenarios.

Overclocking artikel

But they are risks involved in overclocking. The major one is the effect called electromigration. Basically, all CPUs will eventually die from this effect, but most CPUs are rated to last about ten years, and hopefully no one will still be using today's technology in ten years. Overclocking, especially increasing the voltage going to the CPU, speeds up electromigration. The brave souls who do this are betting that by the time electromigration claims their CPU, they will have already upgraded and it won't matter anymore. This is where cooling comes in. CPU fans and miscellaneous cooling devices can help to keep the CPU heat down and maybe nullify the necessity to increase voltage. Both of these help to slow electromigration. Some chips, like Cyris, IBM, and AMD CPUs, run hot at their normal clock speed, so cooling is imperative when overclocking these chips.

In an office environment, consistent performance is very important, and avoiding system crashes or hangs is crucial. By overclocking, one increases the chances of the occurence of a system fault. It is a good idea to put a system through a rigorous test before doing anything important on it. A good program for this testing is Winstone.

Canopus interview

The Spectra 2500 had no trouble flying off of store shelves and online vendor inventories. Why stop producing a product hailed by many within the industry as the hands down best nVidia TNT based video card?

You have a point. Unfortunately we under forecast this product based on the recent collapse of pricing and demand for Voodoo2 boards we experienced this summer. As a result, we limited our production builds to the original forecast. By the time our backlog began to build, the lead-time to restart manufacturing to build more boards had pushed us to the end of January. This, combined with declining TNT prices, caused us to make the difficult decision to not continue manufacturing this product. We have been trying to supply as many boards as possible to fill current orders.

Nascar Racing 3 preview

As much as we may love racing simulations, there's always a special place in our hearts for witnessing spectacular, heart-stopping crash scenes and explosions. The crew over at Papyrus realizes this, and has created an entirely new physics model to satisfy our demolition derby needs.

The new, more realistic N3 physics model is being touted as revolutionary in the world of racing sims, and is sure to be the big draw of the game. N2 had a limited, 2D physics model which, while the most realistic model three years ago, is severely limited, especially during crashes.

The crew over at Papyrus started with a clean slate when designing their physics model for N3. They started with a model of a stock car, complete with a full working model of stock car suspension, and then they modeled all the forces that could affect a car out on the racetrack in all three dimensions.

This model should allow for the most realistic racing to date. Collisions will have the potential of sending cars airborne and will make for some spectacular yet heart-stopping crashes. The car's weight transfer from front to rear will be more pronounced than in N2 - letting off the gas too quickly will shift weight to the front, make the car lose traction in the rear and cause a spin. Getting on the throttle hard will shift weight to the rear and reduce your steering response.

Tom's nieuwe column!

I can remember a few months ago when I quite a few readers asked me to test the Spintel Card from KCS, a little ISA card that is supposed to change the program code in real time, thus making software run faster. I could not really be bothered testing a product that was sounding so hyped, I never really trusted the wonderful promises of KCS. In the last issue of c't-Magazine, Andreas Stiller, my hero of computer hardware knowledge, had put one of those little miracles to the test. The first thing Andreas found out about the wonder card was that the card itself is nothing else but an oversized dongle for an ISA slot. I spoke to Andreas today on the phone and he commented "Well, I never thought that an ISA card could do anything much about changing CPU code or improving system performance in any way. What would you expect from a card that's running on the slow ISA bus?" As a matter of fact, the Spintel Card is only containing some status bits and it's accessed over the addresses C79Ch/C59Ch. The software that's delivered together with the Spintel Card is checking those addresses to make sure that the card is installed and the user is eligible to run the special program. However, the software does have a positive effect. It makes some benchmarks indeed run faster! Andreas found that the secret behind the Spintel Card is a software that fixes some major performance failures in the GDI of some, maybe many, graphics cards. The Spintel software accelerates particularly the BitBlt -function of the GDI, besides some other functions. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any effect of this software on DirectX (mainly for games) or video. Andreas concluded: "Spintel is merely fixing some GDI performance failures of some graphics cards. Thus you can only find some performance increase with graphic intensive software. Modern software, using DirectX and thus skipping the GDI won't benefit from the Spintel software. The card itself is nothing but a copy protection for the Spintel software. I suggest to rather spend the money on a new CPU, which will increase the whole system performance."

Thanks to Andreas for being the first and only one to find out the truth about the Spintel Card. I guess I don't have to comment on his conclusions any further. You can find his article on page 42 in the issue 1/1999 of c't-Magazin, still the best computer magazine in the world.

Wicked 3D eyeScream review

he eyeSCREAM drivers offer a whole new look at how you set you glasses up, and add some features that were not present in the original release. For starters, you can now set the refresh rate of the glasses, which makes using them all the more comfortable. This refresh rate can go as high as 79 Hz per eye.

The Wicked 3D Board Company also added some advanced controls to help get rid of the "graininess" and "ghosting" I reported when I first took a look at the H3D counterpart. You can now set the depth of the 3D effects, as well as change the amount of correction that you apply to the "Stereo" image to get it looking just right. You may say: "Hey, I could set some of that stuff before, what kinda' bull you trying to sell here?" What's different is now you can set these individually for Glide and OpenGL, where as before, it was one global setting.

Asus TNT Tweak.

Door Tweakers.net Nieuwsposter, 12 januari 1999 02:000 reacties, bron: The Riva Zone

Asus has released a tweak program of sorts for their V3400 TNT video-card. This thing lets you change the core speed and memory speed on the V3400. Tweak Monkey also tells me that this program searches for the V3400 driver, so you cannot use this unless you have one. And remember, there's no such thing as risk-free overclocking.

About Hercules Drivers...TNT

Door Tweakers.net Nieuwsposter, 12 januari 1999 01:420 reacties, bron: The Riva Zone

Rumor has it, from several sources, that the Hercules drivers released recently will work on ALL TNT based video-cards and not just the Hercules board. The biggest advantage is an overclocking utility that is included that doesn't require registration to start at the selected clock. We can not guarantee that they will work, but they seem to be the freshest out there and have been confirmed to work on the STB and Canopus TNT boards. Happy Testing!
