Warzone 2100 screenshots

t's 1999 but some trends never change. That's right until some games developer can hit the nail firmly on the head with a game for the real-time strategy genre, more and more will keep springing up. Of course this isn't a drawback so long as you're an ardent real-time strategy fan (as man of you undoubtedly are). But what if you've got a 3D accelerator at the ready and are looking for some a bit classier in the visuals department? Something that makes use of your D3D compliant 3D accelerator or your 3Dfx based card via Glide? Then perhaps EIDOS' Warzone 2100 might be the cork-stopper that fills that void...

Apache beats Mikroschoft

Goed nieuws!

According to the recent numbers Apache grew its share to 54.22 per cent against 53.78 per cent in December, while Microsoft in the number two slot declined from 23.5 per cent to 23.33 per cent. Both companies still saw healthy growth, however – sites running Apache increased from just under 2 million to 2.2 million, while Microsoft also put on nearly 10 per cent. The Netcraft figures put Netscape a poor third with 4.22 per cent of the market, but this probably understates the company’s position - Web server numbers seem pretty variable, depending on who you ask.

ut what can you do if you want to overclock your card but your drivers donŽt give you an option?.. well, there are multiple ways to do that:

You can find a crack for the ASUS tweak util at RIVA Extreme, so you can use this tool with every TNT cardŽdriver. But I canŽt recommend you to do that, because RIVA Extreme reports that the tool shows you wrong values after cracking! Another point is that there are more secure ways to overclock your card!!!!

One is to use the actual Win9X drives of the Hercules Dynamite TNT. There is no cardcheck included in this driver - they do work with ALL TNT cards. But they do only give you options to change the TNT clock and memory clockspeeds. There is no way to change the memorytimings. But more about that later.

The third way is to use Powerstrip by Entech Taiwan. The newest beta version (Download) does also have a option for fast memory timings. I was able to run my V3400 with 105/125 including FastMem. But IŽve placed a big ventilator by the side of my case.

The 'problem' with Powerstrip is that it does not save the settings youŽve made, so you have to re-set it every time after you boot-up your system - or register the software. But there is a way to reduce that effort with the newest PS-version:

Riva TNT optimizing

The RIVA TNT is currently the world's fastest 2D/3D graphics processor. Boasting an official fillrate of 180MPixels/s and a 36 billion operations/s pixel engine, the RIVA TNT is supposed to be able to take up to 6 million triangles and spit them out in vivid colour at very high framerates. Many RIVA TNT users were ecstatic with the huge increase in performance and visual quality. Games no longer jerked like a bucking bronco and textures no longer looked like they have had a bad case of the rash.

However, running the Torture timedemo of Half Life will reveal a sad fact. Even the RIVA TNT will choke with a huge number of people running around shooting each other up! The standard RIVA TNT in a Celeron 450A system can only expect an average framerate of around 11-12 fps in the Torture timedemo. That means that while the RIVA TNT is very fast, there's always the need for more speed.

So, how can we tweak the RIVA TNT for more speed? Let's see...

Spectra 2500 discontinued

Hi, I would like to know if you already got the Spectra 2500 instock, since I cant find anyplace that has them onstock, and if you dont have when will you recive some more?

Thanks in Advance

The drivers seem to be closely related to the reference design. There are still some quirks in them, for example the new 3.20 version of the 3DNow! enhanced Quake2 is only running with the standard 3dfxGL but not with the 3DNow! one, some initialization fails.

I also had some problems with Final Reality, which wouldn't start for the same reason and Need for Speed 3 had a very annoying polygon flicker all over the screen in 3D mode despite the patch and also in the animated 2D screens, it would seem like it is not displaying in double buffer mode.

The same occured in the 3D Mark demo and Quake 2 at first, but went away when I flashed my motherboard's BIOS with the newest version from Epox, although there is no connection to video board problems mentioned in the readme for the BIOS update - go figure.

Gigabyte needs to invest a little more time in the debugging there.

Interesting touch is a control panel that let you click at preselected resolution/refresh combinations so you won't have to play around with sliders, though setting your refresh for the resolutions once and using the tray icon does the same and more. Bored engineer filling hours, quite likely.

Diamond MX300 review

Gamers take note, however: it will make deathmatch HARDER, not easier. This due to the fact that sound is now muffled if it passes through walls. The days of hearing things on the other side of the level are over. Distance becomes a lot harder to discern with A3D enabled. So if you're intent on performing perfectly in deathmatch, you'll want to turn off A3D inside of those games that support it. If you're not playing competitively or if you know your opponent is using it too, you're better off leaving it running, though.

On the other hand, Diamond is promising to add support for Creative's EAX technology in an upcoming driver update, so the really cool effects produced by the Sound Blaster Live! will soon be available on this board also. EAX allows sound to be changed according to the environment around it- i.e., a gunshot will sound different if fired in a small metal pipe as opposed to a canyon.

If you already own a card based on the Vortex (1) chipset, this will on evolutionary, not revolutionary, especially considering the few titles that currently utilize A3D 2.0. Hopefully this will change in the next few months as other games are slated to be released with support for it, but in the gaming industry, promises rarely can be believed...

SiS 6326 review

o put it simply, the chip has found its way into thousands of sub-$1000 home PCs.  With names like Matsonic, PC Chips, Eurone, Amptron and even Diamond Multimedia incorporating the chip into controller cards and mainboards, we thought it a wise idea to test its performance and compatibility.  The SiS6326, while not a monster gamers chip is nonetheless a stable workhorse in the super7 arena providing excellent 2D and video performance, and at an unbelieveably low price.  Current market reports show cards based on the chip available from $28.00 and up.

Rumor has it that besides the hardwired multiplicator Intel also plans to equip the new Celeron models with a secure PPL circuit. The latter should only work with the specified external clock rate. Higher frequencies will supposedly result in an immediate shutdown of the CPU. At least in this case counterfeits based on overclocked CPUs would not be possible anymore either.

Descent III preview

One of my favorite additions are the more than twenty new weapons. Some of these new vehicles of destruction are worthy of singular mention. The napalm missile ejects its contents upon impact and burns for a while, then drips down onto the ground laying ambush for those traveling the tunnels. Other weapons seem very familiar, partially kin to ones seen in the previous titles, while others have taken on quite the Forsaken feel, such as the napalm gun. Guns said to be in the game are a microwave gun that deforms the viewpoint of anything it hits, including players, and something called the mass driver, which is rumored to act similar to the railgun in Quake 2.

No Descent game would be complete without an array of missiles, and this one doesn't disappoint. The frag missile is much like the smart missile, releasing huge amounts of shrapnel upon impact. The impact mortar acts like a bouncing bomb. One of the most talked about weapons so far has been dubbed the black shark, but not much is known about the specifics of what it does.

Falcon 4 review

I respect Microprose for making the plunge. 1997 and 1998 are testimonies to companies who approached the brink, and shrunk back. F22 ADF was originally supposed to sport a dynamic campaign: it did not. Total Air War was supposed to sport a dynamic campaign which integrated a complete ground war with an air war. It did not. Again and again developers have had to temper their enthusiasm with the realities of time, talent and tuppence. Microprose did not. Eventually this gamble will pay off in spades for the hard core sim crowd. But it may be a while before the tarnished reputation of MPS recovers.

Unfortunately, it isn't only the obvious things that plague F4: the CPU hogging 2d cockpit and campaign; the unfinished Mission Builder; the uneven wingman AI. But in the campaign, which is the heart of this giant, things constantly go awry. AWACS calls can be bizarre (intercept a bandit six hundred miles away); mission reports can likewise fail to pass muster; ground radar is powered down; and ATC will sometimes ditch you; bomb hits which are spot on register no damage.

In a conversation a few days after release Gilman Louie, Chairman of Microprose and perhaps the most responsive simulation developer in history, admitted that the game was released early and on a shaky footing. But he also promised to see it through, and noted that part of the reward for buying a shaky product came in the form of a ring bound manual that was very expensive to produce.

It's up to you individually to judge whether that position holds merit. Given the financial realities, Hasbro/Microprose probably had no choice but to release the game or kill the project permanently.

Personally, given these options, I would rather buy Falcon 4 now and join the ranks of unpaid beta testers around the world. But not everyone is content with this position, and no one, Microprose included, is happy with the current state of the sim. What's a fella to do?

Adaptec Ultra2 SCSI controller

Adaptec has introduced two new Ultra2 SCSI cards. The 2930U2, designed for the desktop PC, is an affordable 80 MB per second solution with connectivity to all SCSI peripherals. The 3950U2, Adaptec's first 64-bit PCI SCSI card, doubles Ultra2 throughput, providing 160 MB per second performance to enterprise servers. Both products are available at prices comparable to previous generation SCSI products.

``Adaptec's goal is to deliver the best I/O products for each segment in computing,'' said Jim Comstock, director of distribution products for Adaptec. ``We've achieved that goal by designing new, state-of-the-art Ultra2 SCSI products optimized for each key market.''

The 32-bit PCI, single-channel 2930U2 SCSI card is Adaptec's lowest priced Ultra2 SCSI card, and is designed to connect common desktop peripherals such as hard disk drives, removable drives, CDR, and DVD drives. Because the 2930U2 incorporates Adaptec's SpeedFlex technology, 80 MB/second throughput can be realized regardless of the kinds of peripherals being used. Without SpeedFlex, users concurrently running Ultra2 Low Voltage Differential (LVD) hard disk drives and common (non-Ultra2) desktop peripherals cannot achieve this maximum performance. No other SCSI card on the market has the combined connector design and SpeedFlex-like technology which make this possible.

The continuous high data rate and flexibility of the 2930U2 make it ideal for professionals using complex graphics or database applications requiring moving large amounts of data and using a variety of peripherals. The 2930U2 includes support for Windows 95, 98 and NT.

Memory makers are struggling with decisions on how much back-end equipment to purchase to support Direct Rambus DRAMs later this year. Their decisions are complicated by uncertainty over demand for the new memory and how much of a premium customers will pay for it.

Bullish analysts predict about 250 million units of the Direct RDRAMs will ship in 1999. Intel Corp. will ship prototypes of its Camino chip set with support for Direct RDRAMs this quarter, and major PC OEMs are expected to ship systems with a 0.18-micron Katmai processor, Camino and Direct RDRAMs by the third quarter. But the ramp of the Direct RDRAM remains a big unknown.

NEC is trying to decide how many testers and other back-end equipment must be ordered now to meet Direct RDRAM demand. NEC has more experience manufacturing RDRAMs than any other vendor by virtue of its supply relationship with Nintendo Ltd. (Kyoto, Japan), which used the 18-Mbit RDRAM in its Nintendo 64 game machine. "We have shipped tons of Rambus memories to Nintendo," said Hirokazu Hashimoto, president of NEC Electronics Inc.

"From the silicon point of view, changing from SDRAM to the Direct RDRAM is not so difficult," said Hashimoto. "But a lot of testers are needed. One estimate is that an investment at the back end of about $8 million to $10 million is needed to produce 1 million units of Direct RDRAM. If you assume that the industry will have enough 0.25-micron capacity at the front end, the question is whether the industry will invest the $2.5 billion or so needed to support the 250-million-unit Direct RDRAM scenario."

Japanese companies will need to invest to keep up with the production of Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics and the combined chip operations of Hyundai-LG Semicon. But Hashimoto noted that "Japanese companies are in a very, very tight financial situation this year" because of continuing problems in Japan's domestic economy. He declined to speculate on whether NEC would increase its semiconductor-related capital expenditures, but said that the head of NEC's electronic devices operation, Hajime Sasaki, has stated that NEC wants to retain a 10 to 15 percent share of the worldwide DRAM market. NEC held 11 percent of the market last year, Hashimoto said.

Carmack over QIII & Mac

I think Apple is doing a lot of things right. A lot of what they are doing now is catch-up to wintel, but if they can keep it up for the next year, they may start making a really significant impact.

I still can't give the mac an enthusiastic reccomendation for sophisticated users right now because of the operating system issues, but they are working towards correcting that with MacOS X.

The scoop on the new G3 mac hardware: Basically, its a great system, but Apple has oversold its

performance reletive to intel systems. In terms of timedemo scores, the new G3 systems should be near the head of the pack, but there

will be intel systems outperforming them to some degree. The mac has not instantly become a "better" platform for games than wintel, it

has just made a giant leap from the back of the pack to near the front.

I wish Apple would stop quoting "Bytemarks". I need to actually look at the contents of that benchmark and see how it can be so misleading. It is pretty funny listening to mac evangelist types try to say that an iMac is faster than a pentium II-400. Nope.

Not even close.

From all of my tests and experiments, the new mac systems are basically as fast as the latest pentium II systems for general cpu and memory performance. This is plenty good, but it doesn't

make the intel processors look like slugs.

After the failure with the 400MHz Celeron, I was ready to move on to the 366MHz version of the chip. After setting everything up in the bios, I chose the save and reset and started praying. The computer beeped to let me know that everything was ok, and went through the post and then proceeded to the boot screen. I then chose to start Windows 98, and watched everything start up. Surprisingly everything started without a hitch and I was soon staring at a network logon prompt! Starting to feel as excited as a child on Christmas day, I decided to hold back my joy until I saw how stable the system was. After all, overclocking can work fine for a few minutes until the computer crashes. I decided to run 3Dmark! 99 in demo loop mode for about œ an hour, to see how reliable this setup was. When I came back I was surprised to see everything was still working, a sure sign of a successful setup.

The snow was starting to come down pretty hard, so I wanted to hurry up and get some benchmarks to hold you over till the final review. Using my Metabyte Wicked 3D Voodoo2 card set to 95MHz, (Single Card) I fired up the computer for a little Quake 2 loving. One thing to remember is the benchmarks are with no tweaks, so I think over 100 frames per second is pretty good :) Here are the results:

640x480

Demo 1 – 103fps

Demo 2 – 97fps

Crusher – 51.5

800x600

Demo 1 – 66.6

Demo 2 – 65.7

Crusher – 40.1

System:

Abit BH6 Motheboard

64MB of Cas2 Ram

Celeron 366/550 5.5X100

Matrox Marvel G200

Metabyte Wicked 3D

Provided we do not get a lot of snow tonight, I will be sticking a TNT card in the computer and doing some extensive benchmarking for my final review tomorrow. I also want to say as soon as I received some better man-made cooling for my system, I am planning on attempting to run it at 550 indoors J

Celeron 400 review & overclocking

Our two CPUs performed rather similarly in the overclocking field as well. Since the 370SBA didn't have jumper settings for intermediate frequencies between 66 and 100Mhz, Supermicro was kind enough to add ratio multipliers to the motherboard. Please remember that production models of both PPGA and SEPP CPUs will be ratio-locked, so that changing the multipliers will have no effect. We wanted to see what the physical limits of the CPU were, since the chip may fail at 6.0x100Mhz, but succeed at 83.3Mhz, still yielding a net 100Mhz gain.

The Celeron PPGA indeed failed at the 100Mhz bus speed. It also failed at 5.5x100. At 5.0 x 100, a close approximation of 6.0 x 83.3, the PPGA Celeron booted up fine, clocking to a successful 500Mhz. The SEPP package was easier to deal with, since the P6SBA has multiplier jumpers by default. The Slot-1 Celeron also failed 600Mhz and 550Mhz, but stabilized at 500 (also 5.0 x 100). Socket-370 motherboards which support clock frequencies of 66, 75, 83, and 100Mhz will be able to take advantage of these overclocking speeds.

What about using higher voltages? Without a Socket-370 motherboard capable of adjusting voltage settings, we were limited in this test to the Slot-1 chip. We then took the Slot-1 Celeron and placed it into an Abit BH6, the current choice of 2.2v Celeron overclockers. At 2.1v, we hit success at 550Mhz (5.5 x 100). Ah, the freedom of multipliers. Without the cheat of an engineering sample, this speed wouldn't be possible on the 400, as it sits squarely between 75Mhz and 83Mhz. At 2.2v, the CPU would not POST.

Guys, I discovered something peculiar while playing around with my BH6/300A(Compeq) combo. It had been running at 504 at 2.05V since the day I got it, and I had tried it several times at 558, but would eventually lock-up after about ten to fifteen minutes in Windows. The other day however, while digging through the piles of used components laying around here, I found one of my old Promise Ultra33 PCI IDE controllers (Ultra DMA). Seeing as it always tested higher than any onboard IDE controller I have ever had, I decided to play around with it in the BH6. I popped it in, plugged my Primary Master into it, left my CD-ROM plugged into Secondary on MoBo, disabled Primary in BIOS, and fired it up. Got into Windows and tested fine at 504, and was faster than the BH6's onboard controller. The next step was to see if I could get 558 to work. I went back into BIOS and switched to 558. Powered up and made it to Windows to my surprise (Didn't think it liked to be O'Ced). Guys, here's the kicker, its been running like this for a freaking week and a half! I've been running everything I've got to try to kill this thing (Unreal in software mode, QuakeII, couple of 3D rendering programs), but it won't die! To top it all off, I am running 96 Meg of PC66 memory in the damn thing! Does anyone understand why this is happening? Is the onboard controller on the BH6 not capable of handling very high speeds, or what? Let me know what you guys think
