Gigabyte Banshee review

Voodoo Nation heeft een review van de Gigabyte GA-630 in elkaar gedraaid. Het ding is gebaseerd op de Voodoo Banshee. De performance van de Banshee is redelijk, maar er zijn nog wat problemen met de drivers:

The drivers seem to be closely related to the reference design. There are still some quirks in them, for example the new 3.20 version of the 3DNow! enhanced Quake2 is only running with the standard 3dfxGL but not with the 3DNow! one, some initialization fails.

I also had some problems with Final Reality, which wouldn't start for the same reason and Need for Speed 3 had a very annoying polygon flicker all over the screen in 3D mode despite the patch and also in the animated 2D screens, it would seem like it is not displaying in double buffer mode.

The same occured in the 3D Mark demo and Quake 2 at first, but went away when I flashed my motherboard's BIOS with the newest version from Epox, although there is no connection to video board problems mentioned in the readme for the BIOS update - go figure.

Gigabyte needs to invest a little more time in the debugging there.

Interesting touch is a control panel that let you click at preselected resolution/refresh combinations so you won't have to play around with sliders, though setting your refresh for the resolutions once and using the tray icon does the same and more. Bored engineer filling hours, quite likely.
