Nokia lanceert goedkope zakensmartphone

Nokia heeft een nieuwe zakensmartphone gelanceerd, die net als de E66 en de E71, meerdere profielen ondersteunt om zaken en privéleven te scheiden. De E63 wordt nog deze maand uitgebracht en zal minder dan 200 euro kosten.

Het toestel, dat door Nokia in dezelfde lijn als de succesvolle E71 wordt gezet, is de eerste in een reeks toestellen die dit jaar nog van de Finse fabrikant worden verwacht. Eerder deze week lekte uit dat Nokia dit jaar nog zeven andere smartphones wil aankondigen.

Nokia heeft als voornaamste verkoopargument is dat de gebruiker met de E63 zaken en privé gemakkelijk gescheiden kan houden. Dat was ook al mogelijk met twee eerdere modellen uit de zakelijke E-series: zakelijke e-mail, afspraken en toegang tot een bedrijfsnetwerk kunnen met een apart profiel gescheiden worden gehouden van bijvoorbeeld privémail en het persoonlijke adresboek. Daarnaast kunnen bestanden op de thuiscomputer via de telefoon bekeken worden met behulp van de Files on Ovi-dienst, ook als de pc uitstaat. Daartoe krijgt de gebruiker 1 gigabyte online opslag van Nokia.

Internetten of e-mailen op het toestel kan met gprs of het - in Nederland niet meer gebruikte - edge. Umts wordt niet ondersteund, maar wifi wel. De gebruiker kan plaatjes schieten met een 2-megapixelcamera en er zit 110MB intern geheugen in de E63, dat kan worden uitgebreid met een geheugenkaartje. De telefoon is dertien millimeter dik en 126 gram zwaar en verschijnt in twee kleuren: rood en blauw.

Waarom wordt dit artikel op T.net gepost als het slechts om een Edge-toestel gaat?
Zijn er genoeg andere redenen om het toetstel te gebruiken ondanks dat het geen 'Nederlands' 3G ondersteunt?

Onlangs was ik op www.nokia.nl aan het zoeken naar een toestel, en vond het al zo raar dat er een aantal Edge toestellen aangeboden werden; wat moeten we er nog mee in Nederland?
Mensen kunnen wel eens van een koude kermis thuiskomen als ze en nieuw toestel kopen met zogenaamde breedband verbinding terwijl Edge niet meer werkt.

En dan is meteen mijn vraag: WCDMA zou Edge-compatible moeten zijn, maar hebben we in Nederland dan ook geen WCDMA? Dat is toch ook een 3G-techniek?

UMTS is WCDMA. Deze telefoon heeft dus ook gewoon UMTS, alleen geen HSDPA.

In België kost internet via een PDA nog stees 15 euro / maand voor slechts 50MB, dus hier heeft bijna niemand zo een abonnement. Dus is 3G hier een beetje een overbodige feature.

Zaken die ontbreken ten opzichte van zijn broer zijn:
- GPS
- HSDPA (dus wél UMTS)

Het probleem is echter dat die voor sommige versies niet werkt.
B.v de N95 8gb, daar gaat het rode lampje branden i.p.v de witte.

En bij mijn E71 brandt het ledje wel, maar op 30-40% van zijn kracht.

Toch begrijp ik nog steeds niet waarom in budget toestellen wel nog steeds camera's gebouwd worden..
Is er wel eens een poll geweest voor wie de dit soort camera's op regelmatige basis gebruikt? Voor de eerste week is het leuk, maar om echt foto's te maken gebeurt niet veel.

Ik heb nu een N82 met 5mp, maar een 3.2 mp camera van 4 jaar geleden maakt mooiere foto's dan deze kan.

Ik had ipv de camera toch liever een GPS module of HSDPA gezien.

So OK now i can reveal what i think of the new Nokia E63 and really all i can say is WOW and believe me I'm not normally or easily impressed.

So this is the apparently non luxury version of the E71 well I'm not so sure as whilst it may not have the luxury feel of an all metal construction it is far from feeling cheap. The back is made of the same rubberized material that the original N95's had and is something i really like as it has a great tactile feel. The front is made of hard plastic but the paint is slightly metallic so looks nothing short of great.


One of the first things you notice is the lack of any buttons on the outside case separating the two halves is a Black band that goes all the way round the phone and in this we find on the left hand side two flaps. One is for the Micro USB port the other is for your memory card then on the right hand side top of the phone we have the 3.5mm jack point. This has a little stopper in it that i would imagine those of us that will use it will just remove and put back in the box. Those that may not wish to use it can just leave it in place.


My trial unit is the Red version although how i would describe the Red is hard other than it looks really nice. Here are some pictures of how the Red E63 looks.
Now on to how the E63 performs and please remember the unit i have is not even a final production unit which IMO makes my findings even better.

Turning on the E63 takes just 24 seconds to being ready for use and after an initial charge i proceeded to sync a years worth of Calender entries my contacts and my Mobile Internet Bookmarks. As with all recent Nokia's once you attach it to your computer and start PC Suite it installs the necessary drivers so your good to go. This first sync took less then 15 minutes with nearly 4,000 Calender entries i then installed Handy TaskMan and ScreenSnapS60. The next thing i did was to add my Wireless Network and install Seven Push E-Mail both of these were quick and easy to do.

The E63 with Seven running in the background is showing 71.7mb of free Ram and the whole device reacts really fast there is no lag in anything you won't to do even the thumbnail pictures in the Gallery refresh fast.

The biggest improvement and major change between the E63 and the E71 is the addition of a 3.5mm jack as this means using your own headphones to listen to Music is easy and no longer requires a silly adapter. Now whilst this isn't the hardest thing to overcome i know many users find this very annoying and really at this time when so many devices make such good portable Music players there really is no reason not to have a 3.5mm jack point. The E63 as a Music player is really good both through my Shure EC2g ear phones or even over the E63's built in speaker with my Music encoded @256kbps AAC. Through ear phones the sound is excellent there is volume to spare and it delivers a nice full rich sound with good definition and is lacking nothing to be used as your portable Music player. Video is the same as on the E71 and a little fussy but well encoded material plays very well.


I have also noticed the blurring of the lines between E and N series and was pleasantly surprised to find not only Share Online, Music Store and Podcasting in the Media Menu. But also Ovi Files and although their is no GPS built in the E63 it does have Maps, GPS Data and Landmarks included and just requires a Bluetooth receiver to be added.

Really there isn't much else to say as everything else is the same as found on the E71. The one big difference i have noticed having been away from S60 for a couple of months. Is the greatly improved download apps available as from having a really sparse choice it is now full of goodies. Personally i tend to only install the things i really want and need but there is a great choice of some really good apps in their now.

I haven't used the Camera yet but when i do i will upload some pictures for you to judge but to be honest a 2 megapixel Camera on a E series device I'm not expecting anything then it being good for the odd snap. The only other thing i have noticed is no animations on the menus they are as they are although I'm not really sure how useful this really was besides being a bit of eye candy.

Now the $64,000 question if i was in the market for one what would i buy the E71 or the E63? Well for me the inclusion of the 3.5mm jack is worth more than the better Camera and all metal body as i will get more use out of this than the others benefit me. With the just announced retail price of 199 Euros i think the E63 is nothing short of unbelievable and incredible value for money. Especially as all my devices go into a good leather case the difference in build materials is less noticeable and as i said the 3.55 jack is worth more to me than the build material or better Camera and GPS.


I was going to show some screen shots but decided as they look no different to what we have seen on the E71 it isn't really worth it other than how the Downloads now look.


Sorry one last thing i forgot to mention their is new symbol on the space key and this turns on the Camera light so it can be used as a torch and it's very bright to.

The E63 has a coloured plastic shell versus the E71’s metal one. The front is a metallic-finish, whilst the back cover is a soft-touch finish - both attract far few fingerprints than the E71’s.
The E63 is nearly identical in dimensions to the E71 except for the depth - the E63 is around 1.5 times the depth of the E71.
The E63 has a 3.5mm jack on top versus the E71’s 2.5mm jack on the side. This appears to be the first E-series to have a standard headphone socket - something normally saved for N-series.
The E63 has no side buttons for volume or voice recording. It’s also missing the E71’s IR window.
The E63 has a revised keyboard layout, adding a ‘/’ button on the lower row, shortening the space bar.
The E63 appears to have a slightly smaller dimension screen although it is the same 320 by 240 pixels as the E71.
The E63 lacks internal GPS.
The E63 does not support HSDPA data.
The E63 has the same 110 meg internal memory, but is shipped without an additional memory card (although a slot to add one is present).
The E63 has a 2MP camera versus the E71’s 3.2MP and has a fixed focus.
The E63 adds a flashlight function that allows the camera’s LED flash to be used as a torch.
The E63 lacks the E71’s faux-leather slip case.

jammer dat ze bezuinigd hebben op UMTS, ik snap wel dat het ergens vandaan moet komen, maar juist bij een internet/email toestel zou dit genoeg toevoegen.

Ik merk zelf echt veel verschil in GPRS en UMTS, vooral in response time en aanmelden op het netwerk.

Voor alleen email sync maakt GPRS/UMTS in de praktijk niet zoveel uit, dat zijn iha toch achtergrondprocessen met weinig data - voor mobile web inderdaad wel.

Dit is meer een goedkoop alternatief voor de Blackberry 8800-serie.

Het lijkt me dat ze deze telefoon voor de prijs gewoon willen dumpen,
omdat er geen succes meer zit in zakelijke telefoons gebaseerd op internet en e-mail, maar zonder UMTS support. Via gprs internetten is immers niet van deze tijd, en het ljkt me dan niet echt een move om juist zo'n telefoon nog te produceren.

Ik zie ook alleen maar nadelen ten opzichte van mijn trouwe E61i, welke ik al 1,5 jaar heb.

Een soort poor man's E71 dus. Leuk voor de consument die een qwerty-toestel willen om te smsen en te bellen zonder te betalen voor andere poespas (zoals GPS) die ze niet gebruiken. Wat me wel opvalt is dat op de plaatjes (vooral met de Rode E63 is dat duidelijk) op het scherm een 3G/UMTS dataverbinding toont en in het artikel wordt beschreven dat er geen UMTS-ondersteuning is ....

edit : zo te zien is er wel UMTS ondersteuning volgens de Nokia-site. Alleen is er geen HSDPA aanwezig.

hier zie je touwens dat de headphones aan de bovenkant kunnen worden aangesloten. Klaar dit is een winner. Ik heb geen gps nodig en gsm camera's heb ik nooit veel gebruikt.. iphone is te duur en nokia is een stabiel merk.

But lets be clear - consumers aren’t the target market here - businesses are… and the key business features are all still here:

WiFi
3G (there had been some rumours this was 2G only)
Microsoft Exchange sync via MailForExchange
Expandable memory
Fast operation and stable S60 3rd Edition FP1 OS
Pre-installed QuickOffice
E-series security and encryption functions
Huge 1500mAh battery
…and now all of these things can be obtained from Nokia without also incurring the cost of high-end cases and GPS. The executives may still have the E71s but the rest of us will get the E63s… Looking at the popularity of the lower-spec Blackberry devices around the large corporates I know (where they’re deployed in the hundreds or thousands) this is a smart move.
