Op DigiTimes is een artikel te vinden over het eerste kleine succesje van Intel's Centrino-platform. De onlangs geïntroduceerde TravelMate 800 van Acer heeft namelijk alle verkoopverwachtingen overtroffen. De notebook, die afgelopen woensdag op de markt is gebracht, is inmiddels 25.000 keer besteld. Als gevolg hiervan zal de fabrikant Quanta de productie van de notebook in mei opschroeven naar 30 tot 40 duizend stuks. De TravelMate 800 werd door Acer gepositioneerd als high-end laptop. Het bedrijf had echter niet verwacht dat het de verkopen van Pentium 4-M-notebooks zou overtreffen:
The bigger-than-expected success of Acer’s first Centrino-based notebook in the market has induced contract manufacturer Quanta Computer to speed up production, said industry sources.
[...] Acer positioned the TravelMate 800 as a high-end product and did not expect it to sell better than those equipped with Pentium 4-M processors, sources said. Now, however, the company has boosted its TravelMate 800 shipment estimate from the original 15% of total notebook shipments to 20% in the first half of this year and to 50% by the fourth quarter. Acer earlier said that it aims to ship 1.5 million notebooks this year.
