Software-update: Ubuntu 8.10 alpha 1

De ontwikkelaars van Ubuntu Linux hebben via de Ubuntu-mailinglist de eerste versie van Ubuntu Linux 8.10 aangekondigd, te weten alpha 1. De nieuwe tak van de Linux-distributie heeft de codenaam 'Intrepid Ibex' meegekregen en kan vanaf deze pagina voor een aantal platformen gedownload worden. De definitieve versie van Ubuntu Linux 8.10 staat voor eind oktober gepland.

In tegenstelling tot de voorgaande releases van een nieuwe Ubuntu Linux zijn er van deze nieuwe versie geen live-cd's beschikbaar. De eerste live-cd's van de 8.10-tak worden bij de tweede alphaversie verwacht. De eerste alphaversie van de 8.10-tak bevat de updates die bij Debian zijn doorgevoerd - Ubuntu is immers een derivaat van Debian - en is daarnaast van Linux-kernel 2.6.26 voorzien:

Welcome to Intrepid Ibex Alpha-1, which will in time become Ubuntu 8.10.

Pre-releases of Intrepid are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Alpha 1 is the first in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Intrepid development cycle. The Alpha images are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Intrepid.

The primary changes from Hardy have been the re-merging of changes from Debian and the upgrade of the Linux kernel to a pre-release version of 2.6.26.[break]
