Software-update: Linux Kernel 6.17

Linux 6.17 Released

Highlights of Linux 6.17 include support for ARM’s “Branch Record Buffer Extension” (BRBE), support for the AMD hardware feedback interface (HFI), Intel Wildcat Lake and Bartlett Lake-S support, initial support for the HEVC(H.265) and VP9 codecs in Qualcomm’s Iris decoder, which is supported by the Video 4 Linux (V4L2) driver.

Linux 6.17 also introduces live patching on AArch64 (ARM 64-bit) systems, support for system-call tracepoints in User-Mode Linux kernels, BPF (Berkeley Packet Filter) support for the LoongArch architecture, a new DAMON_STAT module that simplifies monitoring of memory-management activity, and initial support for proxy execution.

Furthermore, Linux kernel 6.17 introduces support for the GICv5 interrupt controller for KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) on ARM systems, AppArmor support for controlling AF_UNIX socket access, as well as support for linear temporal logic monitors in the runtime verification subsystem.

On top of that, Linux 6.17 brings a new option for reserving space for kernel crash dumps, support for control-group-based bandwidth control to the extensible scheduler class, support the swapping and migration of transparent huge pages for s390 systems, and a full x86 attack-vector implementation.

Some networking changes are also present in Linux 6.17, such as gateway routing support to the Management Component Transport Protocol (MCTP) subsystem, support for the TCP_MAXSEG socket option for multipath TCP, Support for the DualPI2 congestion-control protocol, and IPv6 force_forwarding sysctl to enable forwarding per interface.

Linux kernel 6.17 also brings large-folio support to the Btrfs file system, better scalability for block allocation and buffered I/O support to the EXT4 file system, metadata compression support to the EROFS file system, and a new driver to access Intel discrete graphics cards on NVM (Non-Volatile Memory) devices.

There are also new and updated drivers for better hardware support, including improvements for the Framework Laptop 13 with AMD Ryzen AI 300, support for ASUS Commercial laptops using the CS35L41 HDA audio chip, and support for the HP EliteBook x360 830 G6 and HP EliteBook 830 G6 laptops.

It also adds a regulator for the 7-inch Raspberry Pi V2 720×1280 display, Raspberry Pi 1 pinmux/pinconf support, Argon40 Fan HAT support, SoundWire support for the AMD ACP 7.2 platform, support for Touch Bars on x86 MacBook Pros, support for Forcepad (F21) devices, OneXPlayer X1 Pro support, and Argon40 Fan HAT support.
