De ontwikkelaars achter Paint.NET hebben zojuist de tweede alpha-release van versie 2.2 uitgebracht. Dit programma kan worden gezien als vervanger van het bij Windows meegeleverde MS Paint en wordt door enkele mensen van de Washington State University in samenwerking met Microsoft ontwikkeld in C#. De software werkt alleen onder Windows 2000, XP of 2003 en, zoals de naam al doet vermoeden, zal het .NET FrameWork geïnstalleerd moeten zijn. Het changelog van deze release ziet er als volgt uit:

- Rewritten setup wizard. This will keep your settings when installing newer builds, and simplifies the update process.
- Setup wizard is now translated to German as well.
- Help->Language submenu for choosing the UI language (English or German)
- When doing scaling after rotation of selected pixels, the axes of scaling is also rotated (much more intuitive!)
- You may constrain rotation of selected pixels to 15 degree angles by holding down shift
- Fixed a crash with the Canvas Size dialog on Windows 2000
- Updates manager now works through a proxy if one is setup in Internet Explorer
