The trailer(s) make it look much more persistent open world than it is. Like a "open world" where you build forts, then defend them at night/when the portals open. This is very much not the case.
The game is missions based, so you go on a mission, enter a mid sized maps, then have a limited time to loot, get materials, find the portal, set up a fort around it (usually just a maze with traps which you find or make with mats, building a fort was not worth putting too much time into in missions) then starting the waves of enemies. Once the waves are done, the mission is over, that "fort" is gone, and you get rewards based on time, and move on.
The only fort that is persistent is your main fort, which you pretty much build up and upgrade to do increasingly harder waves of enemies, to allow you to reach a new "level" and open up more missions. There was also some base building mechanic (no actual building, all UI based) where you would upgrade buildings with materials to unlock new things, like skills etc. You also got people from missions who could work at these building to speed up research etc.
All the upgrading and research was done in real time. Could take 12 minutes, could take 24 hrs. Stank of F2p mobile mechanics. And the loot crate system was kinda crap. You could get new heroes, people to work in building, sweet weapons, or pure crap. Again, f2p crap. Overall, it just wasn't for me. I wanted an open world map, where you looted and built during the day, and fought/defended at night. Like coop Minecraft and a tower defence game had a baby. But maybe things changed. I played with 2 friends... we all didn't really like it, and moved on quick.
