In eerste instantie waren wij ook een beetje sceptisch. Is het snel, betrouwbaar, en natuurlijk het belangrijkste, is de audiokwaliteit goed. Bij de eerste test werden onze twijfels direct weggenomen..

Alles van deze Mp3 speler is boven verwachting. Dit begint al bij de verpakking, de speler, afstandbediening, batterijen en audiokabel zijn netjes verpakt in een juiste doos. De speler ziet er goed uit een mooi kunststof front met een display en diverse uitlees led’s, blauwe stootrubbers aan onder en bovenzijde. De speler wordt met een afstandbediening geleverd die buitengewoon goed werkt onder elke hoek en op meters afstand. De batterijen voor de afstandbediening worden zelfs standaard meegeleverd.

Het in gebruik nemen duurt enkele minuten. Het enigste wat u moet doen is de netspanningkabel (wordt niet standaard meegeleverd) in het stopcontact steken en de meegeleverde audiokabel aansluiten. De speler is direct gebruiksklaar (geen opstart tijd), de CD erin en klaar. Bij onze test herkende de speler direct de 196 songs die op deze Mp3 cd stonden.Tot onze verbazing herkende onze speler ook de subdirectoires en speelde deze zonder moeite af. De tijd tussen het switchen van de nummers is zeker niet langer dan bij een normale cd speler.

Natuurlijk zou deze test niet compleet zijn als wij de speler niet uit elkaar zouden halen. Dit was een peulenschil 4 schroefjes los aan de achterzijde en klaar is kees. Het is een simpele maar doeltreffende unit met een 220 Volts voeding die omvormt naar 12 volt gelijkstroom. De Cd-rom speler is direct verbonden met een IDE kabel aan de MP Decoder. De decoder is direct verbonden aan de RCA stereo jacks aan de achterzijde. Alles geïntegreerd in een unit.

SystemLogic heeft een review gepost van de Soyo SY-6VBA moederbord met VIA Apollo Pro 133 chipset. In totaal kent dit bordje 29 busspeeds en AGP dividers lager dan 2/3 wat hem erg geschikt maakt voor overclocking.

Well, the board is not a Camino killer but it certainly pulls one over most BX boards. The 133 MHz FSB, ATA/66, and 1.5 GB DRAM support add up to a motherboard with lots of expansion possibilities. If you don't want to go the Intel route or even the RAMbus route, this board can suite most of your needs. Again, I haven't noticed any difference in terms of degraded performances due to the lower memory bandwidth.

The cheap price and nice features put this motherboard high on my "best bang for your buck" list. With some of the new i820 boards costing upwards of $100, and RAMbus also being expensive, this motherboard is a good choice for the price conscious consumer, especially now that it's the holiday season, many will be upgrading their PCs to Coppermines and such. Even with the lower price, you still get about the same performance.

The small gripes I have about the board can pretty much be overlooked. They aren't that big of a deal, but with the better boards coming out constantly, the lack of some features will make this product obsolete soon. The other features make up for some of the short comings but not entirely.

So, what's the bottom line? For those who are afraid of VIA chipsets, there is nothing to fear. Real world performance is about the same, and at a cheaper price. Nice features and a low price make for a nice over-all product. That's why I give this board a 8.5/10.

Necrocon laat weten dat 3DGPU zijn Tweak Guide voor GeForce kaarten van een update heeft voorzien

I've made a few small updates to the GeForce 256 Tweak Guide to let you guys know, due to some feedback I've gotten, that there are a few things I missed. For starters, I've added the .reg download farther to the top, since you'll need that to see the Disable Vsync function in Direct3D, sorry about that. Also added the manual instructions on how to get the CoolBits activated through the Registry, for those of you who are familiar with it. Here's the snip:

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Nvidia Corporation>Global and add a Key in Global called NVTweak. Now go in NVTweak and add a String Value with the name CoolBits (case sensitive). Right click on CoolBits and give it a value of 3.

Also a few people have suggested that I give more details concerning each setting. I thought I'd let you know that by right clicking on each one, and choosing What's this?, it'll give you a neat little description of what that setting does. As always, keep checking the guide and 3DGPU periodically for updates, since I'll be updating it frequently to reflect new knowledge and tweaks as we get a feel for the GeForce more.

De gebruikersvereniging (WIG) heeft een zwartboek opgesteld over Casema. De meest voorkomende klachten zijn de traagheid van het netwerk en de onbereikbaarheid van de helpdesk. Het zwartboek is inmiddels aan Casema aangeboden. Begin volgend jaar gaat er ook een exemplaar naar een speciale kamercommissie. insane stuurt ons weer richting The Register, waar gemeld wordt dat Intel wat problemen heeft met hun 64-bits Itanium (codenaam Merced) processor. Het lukt Intel namelijk niet echt om de CPU's boven de 400MHz te draaien, daarnaast is hiervoor al een erg zware power supply nodig. Compaq's Alpha processor gaat daarentegen wel erg lekker en zal veel eerder de 1GHz grens bereiken. Hieronder de info van The Register:

A report in Forbes magazine is claiming that the prototype Merced systems that are out and about are failing to reach satisfactory clock speeds.

And, according to the piece, Intel's CEO, Craig Barrett, is hopping mad that the firm's flagship 64-bit processor is failing to perform as fast as he hoped it will.

The prototype machines not only are restricted to around 400MHz, but also need huge power supplies to keep them humming, said the Forbes article.

Two weeks ago, we reported on the basis of information from Intel partner Hewlett Packard, that we could not expect realistically to see Merced Itanium machines appear on the market until October 2000. Although this falls into the second half of next year, Intel had hoped that machines would be available earlier than that.

And, again according to HP, initial systems are supposed to clock at around 800MHz.

Intel's problem with the clock speed of the Merced is aggravated by competition from both Compaq with its Alpha processor and AMD with its Athlon processor.

AMD, for example, is easily reaching 1GHz already with the Athlon, and is now in the happy position of being able to pick and choose when to introduce microprocessors at that speed. The AMD part is a 32-bit chip.

And both Compaq and its partner API are likely to have air cooled 1GHz Alphas available before any Merced box gets out of the door. The Alpha processor is a 64-bit chip.

insane komt vertellen dat Samsung bijna 3 miljard gaat investeren in een nieuwe fabriek die Rambus modules zal gaan bakken, en daarnaast komen er een aantal nieuwe research facilities. Samsung Electronics is to spend $2.8 billion on a new chip plant and research facilities.

The company said chip production facility Line 10 would initially make 128MB, 256MB and Rambus chips. Situated in Hwasung-gun, Kyonggi Province in Korea on a one million square metre site, it will be capable of making 32,000 eight-inch wafer starts per month.

Samsung will spend around $1.8 billion on Line 10 by the first quarter of 2001, with the first phase due to open in September. At that time, the company said it expected the plant to be turning out 16,000 wafer starts per month.

The move is part of plans to invest $2.2 billion in factory building.

The plant adds to Samsung's existing 1.3 square metre operation in Kiheung, and is the South Korean company's tenth production line. Samsung plans to build a further seven.

Intel heeft blijkbaar besloten om niet enkel de lanceerdatum van de 800MHz-Coppermine vooruit te schuiven, maar tevens die van de 1000MHz of 1GHz-processor. In februari gaat het bedrijf een paper aan de International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) voorleggen, met het design van een 1GHz-eenheid.

De 1GHz-processor zou gebaseerd zijn op de Coppermine-technologie, en zijn snelheid halen bij kamertemperatuur. In het voorjaar van 1999 toonde Intel al een werkende 1GHz Pentium. Maar om de processor operationeel te houden, waren wel een heel aantal kunstgrepen nodig. Zo was de gebruikte koelinstallatie op z'n minst gezegd niet standaard.

AMD's fastest chip currently available is the 750-MHz Athlon , and while Intel seems to have regained the lead in the megahertz race, industry observers have noted that the fastest Pentium III devices are in very short supply.

"In the past, Intel has not released a product until it was available in volume," an AMDspokesman said. "But now it seems like they are feeling the effect of competition."

AMD plans to release an 800-MHz part next quarter and expects to crack the 1-GHz barrier in mid-2000.

"Through next year, we will have the fastest processors available," said the spokesman.

Even as rumours that Red Hat is about to buy Corel are moving back onto the Linux watcher's radar screen, so has a further item of tittle-tattle that the best-known open source operation is about to buy alternative OS vendor Be.

Indeed, Be's shares rose 49 per cent yesterday, to $37.56, apparently on the back of the rumour. Neither company has yet commented on the claim.

Sounds an interesting plan, but the Linuxisation of BeOS would be tantamount to an admission of failure on Be's part, a confession that it can't after all compete with the open source OS. Be itself is doing reasonably well an OS vendor, with a small but solid band of supporters, and is pushing hard to make it big in the information appliance market. From that perspective, it doesn't need Red Hat. So unless Jean-Louis Gassee wants to cash in his shares or swap them for more valuable Red Hat ones (assuming some kind of share-for-shares acquisition), he's little reason to shake hands with Bob Young, Matthew Szulik and co.

Red Hat, on the other hand, needs Be rather more. Getting Be's technology and putting it into the Linux domain would give its distribution a major lead in functionality. But such is the open source philosophy, Red Hat would have hand it over to everyone else, and any advantage would soon be lost.
