BoomGames heeft een review op het net gegooid van de PineUSA D'Music portable MP3 speler met 64MB aan geheugen. Hoewel de opslagcapaciteit dus al een stuk beter is geworden, blijkt toch dat de overige features niet helemaal vlekkeloos werken:

The previous firmware, 1.0, has been upgraded to 1.00E. While the E may not seem to have changed anything, I've seen a MAJOR improvement, although they still haven't killed some of my old problems.

The unit no longer crashed on me, although two glitches remain. The most annoying of them is the play time on the player. Some of my 3 minute songs become 1 hour and 46 minutes. The time raced by at the rate of one minute per two seconds, although the audio was perfect. Most of the time, the counter was functional, however.

What did go awry was the same recording glitch. The player must have been recording my voice onto the onboard music and run out of space. It changed the name of the sound from Voice001 to UNKNOWN s0df-93 or something of that sort. Immediately afterwards, the power was pulled. When I turned the unit back on, I was asked to format the memory. Obviously, I gave it a NO. All of the songs on my onboard memory were gone. I power-cycled it and answered yes to the format, still no songs.

While the firmware is still buggy, I really must complement them on their improvement over 1.00.

Bij nV News hebben ze wat benchmarks gepost van de final Quake III Arena demo draaiend op een P3-450 met 3D Blaster Annihilator videokaart. In de benchmarks is ook de FPS winst te zijn bij het overklokken van de GeForce kaart. Hieronder de resultaten in 16-bit colour:

Glad to see the final Quake 3 demo, which is version 1.11, is still running nicely. Only had time to run a few benchmarks, and I noticed a few things that changed from the previous demo.

The demo001 has changed and there is a new setting for "medium" geometry. I also couldn't find a save/load player settings on the menu. This was a nice feature since there are 3 of use that use the PC to play Quake 3. Back to executing custom configs again I guess.

Here are a few benchmarks from demo001 on a PII-450MHz and Creative Labs Annihilator (SDR) at 3 different clock speeds using NVIDIA 3.53 drivers. Default high quality settings were used with sound and vsync disabled. Looks like 800x600 will remain my resolution of choice.

Bij Sharky Extreme is een review te vinden van de AOpen AX63 Pro moederbord gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro Plus chipset. Dit bordje heet o.a. support voor PC133 geheugen, geeft je de keuze uit 32 busspeeds die via het BIOS geconfigureerd kunnen worden. Kortom, een lekker plankje voor overklokkers.

With over 30 different FSB settings, the AOpen board is one of the most complete overclockers we have tested. Not only does it allow all these different clock settings, but it is capable of doing it all in the BIOS, without having to fiddle with jumper settings. This has all been done before on a BX platform, however, the advantage comes with the new PCI and AGP dividers.

Earlier in the year when we reviewed the AX6BC Pro we talked about booting with a 153MHz frontside bus speed. At the time, this could only be done with a PCI video card and was not a viable overclocking option. Now, thanks to the AX63Pro's selectable AGP divider option of 2, AGP cards are able to run safely at a speed of 76.5Mhz when the system bus is screaming along at 153MHz, which is only about 10MHz above the AGP card's stock speed level of 66MHz.

Coupled with some of our favorite EMS Technologies PC133 HSDRAM modules, the AOpen AX63Pro is an overclocker's dream. With the capability of easily doing 133MHz and keeping all of the components within spec, this board will allow for some serious overclocking of native 100MHz FSB CPUs.

Compaq and IBM each ship Athlon-based PCs, and Gateway has previously built machines based on older AMD chips. In a holiday PC guide published by FamilyPC magazine, the magazine listed a system allegedly supplied by Gateway with a 600-MHz Athlon. The "Gateway Select 600" was said to be configured with the Athlon chip, 128 Mbytes of RAM, a 20.5-gigabyte hard drive, 6X DVD-ROM, a graphics card using Nvidia's Riva TNT2 graphics chip, Creative Laboratories' SoundBlaster Live sound card, 19-inch monitor, and high-end speakers, all for $2,499. But for now, Gateway has not committed to the Athlon, and the Select 600 system has not been deployed, according to the spokesman for Gateway, San Diego. He said FamilyPC had requested systems be shipped for review several months ago and that Gateway had supplied the magazine with a prototype system at that time. "We don't have Athlon in our current mix," the spokesman said. He declined to comment on when and if that position might change.

With PC133 memory and 1.8 or 1.85 volts for the core, the bus ran at 119MHz (238MT/s), but not quite stably.
At 1.75v with PC100 memory, it was successful up to 117MHz (234MT/s). Daiki will attempt to confirm the stability of this success.
Currently, the K7M BIOS is capable of overclocking the bus to 115MHz (230MT/s). So SoftFSB yields a few percent higher potentiality for when the future K7Ms can overclock to higher levels stably -- remember, previously anything above 220MT/s did not so much as POST, and now it's POSTing at nearly 240MT/s, so there's definitely signs of improvement here.

Bij iXBT Labs hebben ze een flinke round-up gepost van de bekendste Athlon Slot A planken van het moment. Zeer zeker het lezen waard als je nog aan het twijfelen bent, hieronder vast wat uit de conclusie:

Unfortunately, we have to admit that the situation with AMD Athlon mainboards is not so beautiful. Besides, their simple lack in the market, we should also point out some problems with the power supply units of low power and with the stability of certain products. These problems are very likely to be connected with the 6-layer design of most Slot A mainboards, which needs to be very carefully manufactured and this is within the power of very few manufacturers. This situation will probably improve in the near future as soon as we see VIA KX133, which doesn't necessarily require a 6-layer PCB, and besides the development of a new 4-layer AMD Shinner reference-design may also turn things for the better. And for now the only thing we can recommend you is ASUS K7M - a perfectly stable product, which can also boast an incredible performance. Besides, this mainboard is overclockable. The second mainboard providing more or less acceptable system performance is Gigabyte GA-7IX. However, this mainboard showed very poor results in the performance tests and AMD doesn't recommend using it with 700MHz CPUs. As for the rest, we wouldn't advise you to purchase any of them because they prove very unstable and arouse too many problems if the power supply unit is of lower power than it should be.
