The Internet Plaza begint opnieuw

Door Femme Taken, 15 mei 1999 20:000 reacties, bron: Computer!Totaal

Totaal) moet daar binnenkort verbetering in komen.

During an afternoon meeting with Guillemot on the show floor, Parth Shukla informed us that their Xentor 32MB Ultra TNT2 part would be SHIPPING at a 175MHz graphics clock with 195MHz memory speed. The reasoning behind this according to Shukla is,

"The yields were much better than we first thought at this increased speeds. We will also provide an overclocking utility as part of the package."

We'll let you know if the board is overclockable as and when it ships next week.

E3 game previews @ AGN 3D

From what I was able to play in the demo, the game is looking really solid. Tactics used by the AI squad mates are at least modeled like real-world ops, stuff like opening a door from the side, all the while a partner has his gun trained on the door, in order to neutralize anything that might try to shoot out of the situation. The models for the guns are looking as true to life as they can be, and the sounds are also excellent. The SWAT models are also cool, and the animation is top-notch, though in the demo, the walking was not as smooth as it should be. When you made small paces or short walks, the models would sort of slide over the floor. This game is in early beta, but it would be a real shame if Sierra didn’t fix this for the finals release. With support for 8 players over the local LAN and over the Internet, support for 3d acceleration via Direct 3D, and maybe even the inclusion of positional audio, looks like Rogue Spear could have some pretty serious competition.

Nogmaal Brian Hook over Q3Test benchmarks

The numbers that Tom's Hardware has posted make me real uneasy. I'm not sure they're invalid, but I do know that given they are not easy to reproduce on other people's systems and that, more important, the methodology has not been published for review and scrutiny. It is, in fact, leveraging a feature that we have acknowledged is not functioning correctly in Q3TEST. Other sites have dissected that issue in more depth than me, but suffice to say that I think there are enough unknowns and variables with Tom's numbers that I would pretty much just discard them out of hand as being meaningless.

Okay, let me put this less diplomatically: Tom's numbers are not provably correct or valid, and thus we have to assume that they are not correct or valid. I have asked any IHVs that have linked to his numbers or, even worse, used his numbers as marketing material (only his Q3TEST numbers, I have no opinion on any other work he has done in the past), to knock it off. Now. I refuse to stand by idly and let users potentially be misled just because one set of numbers makes one IHV look better than the other.

If someone wants to post numbers to make themselves look good, there is data from a few .plan file postings ago they can base their claims on. Those numbers are good, and if an IHV wants to argue/question those numbers, they are more than welcome to contact me about it.

When the patch is put out (don't know when, but not anytime soon), then new numbers can be posted by anyone just like the good old days. Until then, I'm assuming you trust me, my numbers, and my commentary. If you don't, then I won't notice, but if you do, then it makes all this worth it.

And that's the last I have to say on this matter. Good night.

RIAA wil tijdbom in nieuwe online muziekstandaard

SDMI backers want manufacturers to build a time-bomb trigger into their products that, when activated at a later date, would prevent users from downloading or playing non-SDMI-compliant music. The hardware would initially support MP3 and other compressed file formats, but a signal from the RIAA would activate the blocking trigger.

Gamespy E3 Coverage

Door Femme Taken, 15 mei 1999 12:440 reacties, bron: Gamespy

Ook Gamespy heeft nieuws van de E3 beurs. Over Unreal Tourmanent:

I was lucky enough to get a detailed backroom demo from CliffyB, along with a bunch of guys, and it's definitely a contender in the upcoming "multiplayer wars". Unreal Tourney is looking near-complete, with a ton of very cool maps, several interesting styles of gameplay, and a newbie trainer that was surprisingly interesting even for the grizzled multiplayer veterans in the room. I was impressed by their dedication to training new players, and their bot AI is second to none. I can't wait to do my full preview of this game. [break]Deus Ex:[/break] Deus Ex promises to be one hell of an RPG. Boasting Unreal-engine graphics and full voice dialogue, it's more of an interactive movie than any of that FMV fad ever was. They've got a detailed character system which allows for a ton of variety (and replayability), and a cool method of inventory. A lot of the problems that plagued Unreal (low framerate, long level loads) have been fixed up, and the RPG fits surprisingly well into this first-person-shooter engine. Look for Deus Ex in mid-winter. [break]En Heavy Metal: FAKK2:[/break] Man...if you thought Q3Test was pretty looking, Ritual entertainment's next offering is going to blow you away. Featuring specular lighting, the most realistic chrome and metal effects I've seen yet, multiple levels of detail (which leads to higher poly models), moveable curved surfaces, and a whole bunch of other effects, this game looks set to kick some serious ass. I wasn't sure what to expect from this showing, but the presentation the Ritual team gave me has me convinced this is going to be a triple-A title.

Check de www.gamespy.com/e3coverage voor het laatste game nieuws.

Microsoft denkt over open source

"We have something we must learn from Linux, and we must respond to this area of -- excuse the words -- open source," Ballmer said in a presentation at Tibco Software Inc.'s annual customer conference here.

Firingsquad E3 day 1 report

Of course, we're always excited to hear what's next down the road. Unfortunately for us, Vortex 2 is still a new product, and it's capabilities still remain virtually unscratched by most software developers. However, Aureal is looking towards the future, and "Vortex 3" is in development, and in my rough estimate, should be a little less than one year away. All I could get out of them was that it is a "very ambitious" project, and will likely be at least as big as the jump from Vortex 1 to Vortex 2 (the introduction of wavetracing). I can't wait to see what that might be…

aipei, Taiwan, March 15th 1999--- IWILL Corporation (IWILL®), the leading SCSI motherboard developer, has launched the new 100MHz bus motherboard BD100 Plus™ with AGP Booster™, a dynamic, faster, more power motherboard for computer graphics. This ATX 2.01 form factor compliant motherboard supports Intel’s Pentium III/II processors, and is the most exciting value/performance motherboard in the market today.

Following the footsteps of the award-winning BD100™, the BD100 Plus™ has added several new features, while maintaining the best features of its predecessor. Aside from the AGP Booster™, the BD100 Plus™ has Iwill Smart Setting™, Adjustable Vcore and Vio, Power Management Setup including Suspend to Disk, Power Failure Recovery, PC Health Monitoring software, and versatile power-on functions.

AGP Booster™ (Accelerated Graphics Port Enhancement) enhances AGP performance by synchronizing the AGP speed with the CPU external bus speed. "By breaking through the 66MHz AGP bus limit, we can bring faster and better graphics to the PC, especially for 3D applications," says Marketing Manager Irene Shih .

To Thomas Pabst, with love:

In my opinion, Tom's Hardware has taken a nosedive in the public's eye recently. After selling his soul to nVidia, his articles have gained some extreme bias. We see fewer and fewer updates, and they become more poorly written (see excerpt on page 1 for example). How could anyone out there still believe his Q3A benchmark scores are indicative of anything? I will guarantee this: When Brian Hook's scores come out (shortly), the scores will be 20-50% lower than Tom's across the board, and you may see different cards in the lead in different areas. I would bet the farm on it. Do you still think Tom's Hardware is a reliable source of hardware information? Laat ik de arme man steunen -> 83,7% zegt nee.

Volgende: "Tomzilla's Downfall" bij Dimension 128. Deze is erg lekker :[/break] We are witnessing web-publishing history being made, folks. Tomzilla has always been known by many webmasters to be an arrogant and pompous git, and his credibility has long been in question in the hardware scene, but with his latest jury-rigged, balls-up of an article, prepared with little consideration to accuracy, combined with his arrogant rebuttal of all the inevitable criticism, Tomzilla has pissed off a few too many people, most notably the hardware companies upon whom he so much relies for his advertising income, and the thousands of websites which send him so much traffic!

There is a common phrase "No man is an island", and I'm afraid that also applies to websites like Tomzilla's. For a long time, Tomzilla has acted as if he is soley responsible for the ridiculous success of his website, which is far from true. Most of his visitors came to know of his existance soley because other websites chose to link to his site. There was a time, long ago, when dinosaurs walked the Earth, when Tomzilla's site was a truly interesting resource for the latest hardware news. Not everyone can boast of having published the world's first reviews of the Intel Pentium II and AMD K6. [break]Next: Extreme Hardware: E3, Tom & Other news: [/break] As for Tom, I really can't believe the level of negative sentiment I'm finding around the net. Tom's pulled a boner quite a few times, but this Q3A Test timedemo fiasco might just be the straw that broke the camel's back. Tom's Hardware is a very successful site, but the reasons for its success have little to do with the current content he's producing. At one time, Tom was the only real source of cutting-edge internet hardware reviews, and I frequented the site daily. Tom struck while the iron was hot, and retained many of his early readers and gained even more as word of his site spread. Unfortunately, as the site's popularity increased, the level of content decreased and the overt favoritism became pretty noticeable. I was very surprised to see comments and quotes from hardware manufacturers confirming that they are not impressed with Tom's reviewing process.

As the saying goes, "with great power comes great responsibility", and Tom owes it to his readers to report the news and not just use his articles to generate more hits by posting "I got it first" erroneous benchmarks on pre-beta software. And before you fire off that email, I am not jealous of Tom's Hardware. Those who read Tom's articles are just as welcome to read ours, but "hit grab" reporting like his Q3A Test timedemo roundup simply reinforces the established media's belief that the Web is a morass of misinformation and hype. That hurts everyone who runs a website. [break]En tenslotte: Mr. T wants you to love him bij Maximumhardware.com:[/break] An interesting turn of events: as I type this, Tom has already changed his Q3test article and is now openly defending himself on his site, with so many authorities questioning the validity of his data. It even seems that Mr. T is claiming that none other than Brian Hooke has it all wrong. Who am I to believe, Brain Hooke or Tom? 'Nuff said

The opinion that Tom's Hardware Site has fallen from the premadonna spot it once held is shared by many hardware webmasters, and it is unfortunate and quite detrimental to see that Tom's word is still considered as the "gospel" by so many. We're all entitled to stating our opinions. Unfortunately, too many fear repraisal and remain silent. I believe it's time to speak out a little more......

3Dfx officials reached at E3 said they didn't have enough information about Unified to say whether it infringed on intellectual property or not.

"We'll evaluate this and determine if legal action is appropriate," said Michael Howse, 3Dfx senior vice president of marketing. "We will defend our IP as we have in the past."

THIS MONTH, the closely held North Billerica, Mass., company expects to ship what is known as a terabit switch router, a device it says can handle 1,000 times the capacity of market leader Cisco Systems Inc.’s commercially available routers. A terabit router can handle a trillion bits a second, roughly the equivalent of 72 million simultaneous telephone calls.

It has come to my attention over the past week that people were having problems with their brand-new Leadtek TNT2 cards when using them with SOYO and Chaintech mainboards. Instead of going off half-cocked, we wanted to get the entire story together, which we have for the most part.

It has been confirmed by all three companies involved that there are some hardware compatibility problems with the Leadtek 320 II series video card. On some Chaintech mainboards the video card actually does not allow the board to boot, while on the SOYO, the problems don't seem to be as serious, but still MAJOR problems exist.

Leadtek has acknowledged this and should be issuing a press release very soon. They are extremely concerned with the end users and want to make sure that the customer is taken care of.

It seems as though some work arounds are almost ready to present to Leadtek owners. They seem to include either removing resistors or pin taping. Both to me are very serious issues for the novice hardware buff to handle and seem unacceptable to me, but let's see what actually comes to press.

Turtle Beach Montego II Quadzilla press release

Voyetra Turtle Beach Inc. today unveiled its newest sound card/audio accelerator for the PC gaming and consumer audio markets, the Montego II Quadzilla. The board will be available worldwide from major computer and electronics retailers this month ($99 estimated street price).

The Montego II Quadzilla places the Vortex 2 chipset on a Turtle Beach custom-designed board to deliver premium sound quality and positional audio effects for gaming and general use applications. In addition to doubling the processing power of the original Montego, the Montego II Quadzilla utilizes the new A3D 2.0 API to add Wavetracing technology, which models the acoustic characteristics of a virtual environment via wall reflections and occlusions in real- time. For example, an explosion behind a nearby wall will sound different from the same explosion that occurs across the room or directly overhead.

While the Quadzilla s upports four-speaker output for hard core gamers, it also appeals to the casual user, requiring only a single pair of speakers or headphones for full 3D functionality. It also includes a standard S/PDIF RCA digital output jack for direct-to- digital recording or data transfer.

Other Montego II Quadzilla features include a >97 db signal-to- noise ratio; 18-bit high-resolution converters; DirectSound and DirectSound3D acceleration (96 simultaneous DirectSound audio streams); AC'97, PC'97, and PC'98 compatibility; support for legacy DOS-based games; 64 hardware-based wavetable voices, with an additional 256 voices available via software synthesis (4 MB upgradeable sample set); and a hardware-based, 10 band graphic equalizer. It also supports downloadable samples (DLS) for custom audio patch playback. For more information, visit http://www.tbeach.com.

Newell explained that the major focus of the developers has been to emphasize teamwork. To this effect, weapons that require - or benefit from - multiple users have been implemented. These include a heavy gun which can be fired by one person, but is much faster and more accurate when one player fires while another feeds ammo into the weapon.

The game will also include a coach position, which will allow players to view the battle from overhead and give commands, real-time strategy style.

Team Fortress 2 will also include an ICQ-like server search, allowing you to see who is playing where.

Hmm....= wreed.

Although primarily a first-person shooter, Daikatana will also combine some elements of role-playing games, such as an experience point system. If Hiro kills a creature with a standard weapon, his ability scores (such as attack power, speed, and health) will slightly increase. However, if Hiro uses the Daikatana, it will actually gain the experience, and grow more powerful with every use. As John put it, "Even though the Daikatana will start off as a fairly weak weapon, if you use it enough, it can eventually become the most powerful weapon in the game."

Windoos 98 Second Bugfix review

The majority of bugs that were in Windows 98 Gold have finally been put to rest, but that doesn't mean that Windows 98 Second Edition is bug free. Any upgrade of an operating system is likely to have some problems crop up no matter how small. I have personally noticed one problem so far which is far less than the original Windows 98 had.

Those of you with USB devices will be very pleased to hear that Windows 98 Second Edition has far, far better support for devices, and Microsoft have fixed the annoying restart in MS-DOS error that cropped up when USB devices were plugged into your PC.

Een nieuwe aflevering in onze dagelijkse 'Goede Tommies, slechte Tommies' zeepserie. Tom pakt de Railgun en vuurt terug:

Brian Hook said that 'timedemo' doesn't work ...

"Peace", Brian! I guess we all know that and how it works now, don't we? It may be kinda strange, but it works and gives reliable results. I guess that there wouldn't be any reason why Id wouldn't like this fact.

Q3TEST's 'timedemo' is bogous ...

People come up with all kind of excuses if they cannot stand the truth. So there are several people who don't like the results that I published? Why not making up some rumors to try and make the results look unreliable? The dictatorships in the world have proven that this technique works quite well, so let me send my regards to the people who demagogically doubt the validity of my results as well as to the other Saddams and Milosevics of our wonderful planet.
