Computer Reseller News bericht dat AMD als onderdeel van een reorganisatie 300 banen gaat schrappen: Advanced Micro Devices Inc. said it plans to lay off 300 employees as part of a restructuring program in the wake of an anticipated "significant" loss in the current quarter.
S. Atiq Raza, AMD co-chief operating officer and chief technical officer, said the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company will fall short of its goal of shipping 5.5 million units of AMD-K6 family processors in the current quarter, ending March 28, which will result in the loss.

G200.com heeft specs van de G400: Multiple texture support (yep - like a TNT/Voodoo2)
32bit colour fillrate performance is nearly identical to 16bit color, as fast if not slightly faster than Rage128
FULL HARDWARE TRUE bump mapping support (you just wait - THIS will be the baby)
Stencil buffer
It's capable of playing Quake2 in 32bits color slightly faster than a Voodoo2 in 16bits colour, fast enough for 1024*768*32 at very good frame rates. From what I've read of the TNT2 the G400 should probably be faster yet look much better.

For those of you who haven't heard yet, Anand and some other sites are reporting that PIIIs are bus-locked. According to Anand, the PIII core works only within a certain range of speeds. Supposedly there is some tolerance here, and the chips aren't locked to one specific MHz rating, but the tolerance is tight enough (±5MHz) that, when combined with a multiplier lock, the chips should be impervious to overclocking.
The fact that the PIII core is not locked to a specific speed, but to a range of speeds, shows that my concerns about the feasibility of building an on-die, temperature-independent bus lock were justified. For those of you who read the earlier article, you'll recall that I stated that any bus-locking scheme implemented on-die would run into heat-related accuracy problems. This appears to be the case on the PIII, though they've got the accuracy problem under control enough to make an on-die bus lock feasible. I have some insight on how Intel might have accomplished this task.

Hier de info van Computer Reseller News: Seagate introduced two new drive families which offer Ultra ATA/66 interfaces and non-operating shock of up to 300 Gs for extra protection during shipping and installation.
The Medalist 17242 family offers 9-millisecond average seeks, a 512-Kbyte buffer, and capacity from 4.3 to 17.2 Gbytes. According to Jennifer Bradfield, product marketing manager for desktop drives, the new Medalists are Seagate's fastest drives, and targeted the mainstream PC market.
The U4 drive family is designed for the sub-$1,000 PC market, and offers 8.4-Gbytes capacity, 10.5-millisecond average seeks, and a 256-Kbyte buffer.
Bradfield said the new drives will support the new generation of motherboards with on-board Ultra ATA/66 interfaces.

AGN Hardware heeft wat nieuws over een nieuwe 7200rpm drive van Maxtor: Maxtor also has a new drive on the way. The new DiamondMax Plus 5120 have what are known as "Giant Magneto-Resistive (GMR) heads and have a capacity of up to 20.4 GB per drive. With an average seek time of 9.0 ms and a 7200 rpm spindle speed, this giant may prove to be quite popular.
The drive will feature Ultra ATA/33 when it ships later this month but will move to the new Ultra ATA/66 standard in the near future.

With 3DMark 99 MAX, the engine used for the benchmark will be the same one used in the upcoming game Max Payne. I don't know too much about the game, except that fast scores on 3DMark 99 MAX will translate to fast gameplay. The MAX version of the benchmark adds provides more accurate testing, with new features such as batch processing, and more taxing benchmark scenes.

Two of the biggest features to come out in DirectX 7.0 will be hardware acceleration of lighting and acceleration of transforms and extensions.
Right now, DirectX immediate mode passes rendering chores to the graphics accelerator. But geometric lighting and transforms are still done by the host CPU. Bachus suggested that most of the benefit would come from accelerating transforms. The hardware lighting implementations that Bachus has seen seem limited to a handful of hardware lights - eight or less.

Nog wat stuff erover: Debian uses the Linux kernel and GNU basic tools, and has a development team of
some 300, using the Linux model of development. Slink is only certified for use with
the Linux 2.0x series of kernels, and there are some known problems with the 2.2x
kernel.
Debian decided that it would only use free versions of the X Window system
(X11R6.3) because of what it calls a social contract with the free software community.
Debian is overseen by a non-profit organisation Software in the Public Interest.
Netscape decided to use the Debian free software guidelines as the basis for the
Netscape licence for Communicator.
At Pixar, a developer's PC with Debian was run for 458 days continuously before
being switched off to move it to another floor.

Hier wat info over de specs van de TNT2: The TNT2 will be AGP4X compliant, run at 125MHz Core speed and 150MHz Memory speed. These are the specifications for Creative Labs' 3DBlaster TNT2. Although the rumour of 166MHz versions of the TNT2 has been flowing around the web, there has been no official announcement from nVidia confirming this. Creative Labs' representatives didn't whether this was true or not, they could only hope and we agree. They assured me that this is how their initial TNT 2 based board will look like. Whether there will be a later version of a faster TNT2 is still left to be seen. Have faith. ;) De fillrate is nu 250Mtexels/s met een triangle throughput van 8,3M/s, een maximale resolutie van 2048x1564 en een RAMDAC van 300MHz. Klinkt lekker?

Hier wat spul van Gamelinks: Half-Life and Heretic II showed the importance of a good story in the fun of playing a first person shooter, and Xatrix has taken the hint in loading Kingpin with an interesting story and some RPG elements. Set in a dark, gritty slum world reminiscent of gangster-filled Chicago ala William Wyler's 1937 movie Dead End, Kingpin's plot involves you, the main character, rising up the ranks of the crime syndicates and garnering influence and power. You start out the game as an ordinary thug, and through interaction with other NPC's (Non Player Characters), you climb the crime ladder. As you climb, your surroundings change from the streets to the penthouses. The way you interact with the other NPC's dictates how quickly and how well you gain power.

I have released MBM 4 - Beta 1, this is as Beta as you can get it so I recomend you don't d/l it unless you know what your doing. It will work fine on Windows 9.X but you need to have 3.x installed if you want to use it on NT.
This is Beta so please send me feedback of bugs, for now I have no use for messages saying it won't work on my PC, MBM 4 does not support more boards then 3.8.

I know after posting this review to Wicked PC, everyone will be asking me "What card should I buy? The Live or the MX300?" The answer isn't that easy though, as it depends on what you want to do with the card. For quick and dirty support, the MX300 proves to be king. If you like to tweak every game you own to the max, then the Live is probably a better choice. Neither card is better. The decision should come down to cost, support, bundle, and company reputation. You should be the judge on that part based upon experience. The MX300 is a superb choice for a new sound card, even if all you do is use a word processor. The card is clean, fluid, and sounds very crisp. One advantage to it over other cards (except the Live) is that it's PCI. A PCI sound card uses less CPU power than an ISA one (and can typically generate 2-3 more frames per second in games). All in all, thumbs up on the MX300.

Hier wat info over deze drive: The 4416E sports writing speeds up to 4X with both Recordable and Re-Writable media. Reading speed is 16x, so you should try and get another dedicated CD-ROM drive instead of dedicating everything to this drive.
