De oplossing van het conflict tussen de JBoss Group en Sun rondom de certificatie van de software van open-source distributeur is een stap dichterbij gekomen, zo lezen we bij C|Net. Eind mei dit jaar bracht de JBoss Group versie 4.0 uit van de JBoss server software. Sun gaf toen aan dat het pakket niet helemaal voldeed aan de Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) standaard, terwijl het erbij geplaatste J2EE label anders deed vermoeden. Sun vond dit misleiding. Om te voldoen aan deze standaard moeten het pakket een aantal tests ondergaan. Sun gaf toen de voorkeur aan een oplossing zonder inmenging van de rechter. JBoss vond de prijs van het testtraject te hoog maar wil nu toch gaan certificeren. Het bedrijf heeft een aantal voorstellen gedaan om de problemen uit de wereld te helpen:
Bickel said JBoss Group has made a number of proposals to address problems in previous negotiations with Sun, including a mechanism for allowing volunteer open-source developers to perform the certification tests. Although JBoss has requested a price break on licensing the testing suites, Bickel said JBoss software partners have committed to picking up part of the tab.
If the negotiations are successful, Bickel said JBoss could do the development and testing needed to gain J2EE compatibility within about six months. Bickel oversaw a similar J2EE compatibility testing process when he was executive technology officer at Bluestone Software, which was later acquired by Hewlett-Packard.
