SETI@Home onthult toekomstplannen

SETI@Home, het project dat met behulp van de processorkracht van vele pc's over de hele wereld aanwijzingen voor buitenaard leven probeert te vinden heeft haar plannen voor de toekomst bekend gemaakt. Het huidige project zal tijdens het volgende jaar worden afgemaakt, maar SETI@Home zal niet verdwijnen, er staan namelijk een drietal nieuwe projecten op stapel. Twee hiervan, die wederom gericht zijn op het zoeken naar buitenaards leven, zullen worden mogelijk gemaakt door het derde: BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing). Dit project moet een applicatie opleveren die als basis kan dienen voor toekomstige projecten. BOINC zal dus alleen een raamwerk vormen waarop makkelijk kan worden voortgebouwd:

SETI@home consists of many interconnected programs - screensaver, data server, web-page scripts, and so on. This software has served remarkably well, but over time major limitations and flaws in its design have emerged.

To support future projects we are developing the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC). Like the original SETI@home, BOINC consists of a client program and a data-distribution server backed by a database. BOINC, however, is not a specific application program - it's a framework that can support many different applications. This will make it easy for us to run multiple computations simultaneously - like AstroPulse and our southern hemisphere search - and to release new versions of these applications without requiring you to manually download and install software.

Ik hoop wel dat je zelf mag kiezen aan welke projecten je je processorkracht geeft anders houdt het snel op. Ik bedoel dus dat ze niet zomaar wat rekenwerk moeten opsturen.

Staat er ook juist bij, dat je zelf kan kiezen aan welke projecten je mee gaat doen en hoeveel CPU Power je ze per stuk geeft.

Als SETI@Home wordt opgesplitst in 2 brokken, gaat dat dan niet minder processorkracht opleveren, althans, stuk per stuk gezien? Het deel dat de inkomende signalen controleert van de schotel wordt toch gereduceerd de helft? en hoe kan je dan nog hetzelfde rendement halen?

BOINC is wel goed voor andere organisaties, maar bekom je zo geen verzadiging van de markt?

Volgens jaar zijn alle pc's alweer 2x zo snel. Ik meen dat SETI een tijd geleden al met problemen te kampen had dat men niet meer genoeg data kon aanleveren voor alle hongerige clients. Er komt steeds meer processorkracht bij, ik denk dat die heel goed gebruikt kan worden. En dan heb ik het niet over domme RC5 projecten, maar over het zoeken naar buitenaardsleven, onderzoek naar ziektes, complexe biologische/geologische modellen, enzovoort.

Zeker ook de reaktie over de proxy's/queue's want het is wel te hopen dat er weer iets is voor subteams (memberstats bv).

Ik zie het nut niet van dit soort projecten, je kan eeuwig blijven zoeken tussen de sterretjes, maar of je wat zal ontvangen is natuurlijk een kans van 1 op de miljarden. Een project zoals United Devices doet vind ik veel nuttiger, op zoek naar een medicijn tegen kanker. Maar goed da's uiteindelijk natuurlijk de keus van de gebruiker waar hij/zij/het aan mee gaat doen. Ik heb me keus al gemaakt met United Devices. Op zich zou het wel stoer zijn om nou eindelijk eens met bewijs te komen voor marsmannetjes, maar ja ik kan je zowiezo al zeggen dat daar buiten leven is, en vast ook wel intelligent leven... If there isnt life out there, its a whole lot waste of space. Maar dan ook weer is het denk ik veel stoerder om nou eindelijk eens met een medicijn te komen tegen kanker.

Zolang medische bedrijven als Glaxo Smithkline en anderen geld verdienen aan de verkoop van medicijnen tegen kanker vind ik niet dat ik mijn CPU kracht gratis ter beschikking moet stellen voor hun. De dag dat medicijnen gratis te verkrijgen zijn zet ik alle machines waar ik iets over te zeggen heb in voor onderzoek.

Als jij en duizenden anderen zoals jij hun CPU kracht gratis ter beschikking stellen hebben die bedrijven minder geld nodig voor onderzoek, waardoor medicijnen wel eens goedkoper zouden kunnen worden.

permanent Internet connection, specialist equipment/knowledge or even a
satellite receiver! In fact, to be part of the effort could take as little as 5
to 10 minutes of your time every two to three weeks.
All are welcome to go to the following URL and register:

about what to do next.
In short, after obtaining an ID here, you will be able to download keyfinder
software specially written for this effort. Once you instal the software on
your PC/PCs, you will be given an area/areas of keyspace to search for each PC
you have every time you visit. You could order, say, ten areas at a time for
each PC and not have to return again for 2 or 3 weeks.
Each time you return previous area/areas you searched will be checked by the
server. You drop off an area/s, you pick up an area/s. This is all done pretty
much automatically. Once your area is loaded in your PC, you can let keyfinder
run in the background and forget about it until you need to return to pick up a
new area/s. You do NOT have to be online any other time than when you pick
up/drop off your areas. But you should allow your PC and keyfinder to run 24/7
offline or online. This is VERY important. And when you are not using your PC
for anything else - ie, when you are at work or overnight, keyfinder will
naturally run fastest.
To webmasters, network admins and other people with very large numbers of PCs,
special work is being completed on a server to make your lives a helluva lot
easier. We will need you in this effort.
To any existing search crews, if you would like to join this effort we welcome
you en masse. But should you prefer not, we are very happy to establish
friendly links. It makes no sense for us to search the same areas of keyspace.

Finally, we are not about to kid anybody that this effort will be easy. It will
not. Even with tens of thousands of PCs, without luck, it can take a very long
time. But when was making history ever easy? The choice is to sit and wait,
perhaps for years, without Viaccess . . . or to do something! Maybe we are
wrong, but we think we know which option numbers providers never saw even in
their worst nightmares will take. Nobody can say any more there is nothing they
can do. Seasoned hackers to total newbies . . . by BF, they are all the same.
