Software-update: KOffice 1.3

Op de website van het KOffice project treffen we een nieuwe versie van deze uitgebreide collectie office-programma's voor Linux en Unix-systemen aan. De release, 1.3 genummerd, bevat onder andere programma's voor het maken van teksten, spreadsheets, presentaties, grafieken en flowcharts. Er is veel vooruitgang geboekt sinds de vorige versie, vooral op het gebied van ondersteuning voor Microsoft Office-documenten. De belangrijkste veranderingen zien er als volgt uit:

KWord (Word Processor)

• support for automatic hyphenation;
• a new MS Word import filter;
• support for pictures, tables and footnotes in the RTF export filter (which has been re-written);
• support for pictures and footnotes in the LaTeX export filter;
• a new MS Write export filter and a re-written MS Write import filter;
• support for bookmarks;
• text sorting;
• new character attributes, such as word-by-word underlining and relative font sizes; and
• improved spell checking (selection only; ignore words; etc.).

KPresenter (Presentation Tool).

• support for automatic hyphenation;
• an improved slide transition dialog, featuring a preview of the slide effect;
• drawing images with alpha channels;
• customizable printing of slide notes; and
• improved HTML export as well as usability enhancements to the HTML export wizard.

KSpread (Spreadsheet).

• over 100 new formulas (date/time, math, statistical, financial and more);
• an OpenCalc import and export filter;
• a new LaTeX export filter;
• enhancements to the CSV import and export options;
• new date and time formats;
• a subtotal dialog and formula; and
• default cell styles.

Kugar / Kugar Designer (Business Reporting).

• redesigned to better integrate into the KOffice environment;
• enhanced handling of items in the designer (cut / copy / paste; undo / redo; manual z-ordering; etc.);
• support for printing reports from the command line / scripts; and
• a DCOP interface.

[break]De nieuwe versie is voor sommige Linux-distributies hier als binary te vinden, de meeste mensen zullen echter zelf moeten compileren uit de sources die hier gevonden kunnen worden.

Hoe verhoudt deze zich tot OpenOffice?

- Betere integratie in KDE
- Sneller als je KDE als desktopomgeving gebruikt
- Minder goede ondersteuning van propriëtaire formaten van MS Office
- Wellicht iets minder features (alhoewel nog altijd meer dan genoeg voor het gros van de bureaticasoftwaregebruikers

Ik kijk nu al uit naar KOffice 1.4 die standaard de OpenOffice.org-bestandsformaten gaat gebruiken, de toevoeging van Kexi, een database front-end en krita, een nieuw grafisch programma. KOffice heeft denk ik wel het potentieel om in de toekomst een evenwaardig alternatief, dat bovendien sneller en beter integreert in KDE, te worden van OOo.

Dat ben ik met je eens ja. Vooral als ze goeie ondersteuning voor MS Office documenten hebben zal OOo het nog moeilijk krijgen denk ik. Ze zijn al een eind gekomen maar ze hebben denk ik nog een lange weg te gaan.

Ik vind het vooral heel aardig dat KOffice een beetje DTP-achtig werkt, waardoor je heel makkelijk documenten kan maken die er heel professioneel uitzien.

Ook de 'insert variable' feature vind ik briljant. Zo is een pagina nummer in KOffice niet iets 'geks' zoals in veel andere office pakketten. Een paginanummer is gewone tekst waar je alles mee kan doen wat je met andere tekst ook kan doen. Het enige verschil is dat KOffice de tekst dynamisch aanpast.
