Er is een nieuwe bètarelease van Total Commander versie 8.50 verschenen. Dit programma kan als vervanging voor Windows Verkenner worden gebruikt. Doordat het beeld in tweeën is gesplitst, is het eenvoudig om bestanden te kopiëren, maar het programma kan veel meer. Zo zijn er diverse manieren om bestanden aan te passen, zijn een ingebouwde ftp-client en een multirename-tool aanwezig, en is er ondersteuning voor een groot aantal compressieformaten. Verder kan de functionaliteit met plug-ins worden uitgebreid. Sinds versie 8.00 zijn er aparte downloads voor 32bit- en 64bit-omgevingen.
Nieuw in versie 8.50 is onder meer dat bij het kopiëren, verplaatsen of verwijderen van mappen of bestanden eerst alle items die geen problemen geven worden afgehandeld en dat de gebruiker pas aan het eind een vraag krijgt voor de items die problemen opleveren. Verder is er ondersteuning voor touchsceens en schermen met een hoge resolutie, en vindt het zoeken in een apart proces plaats, waardoor het hoofdscherm beschikbaar blijft. In deze versie zijn verder nog de volgende veranderingen en verbeteringen aangebracht:
