Software-update: WSUS Offline Update 6.6.1

Verleden week donderdag is versie 6.6.1 van WSUS Offline Update uitgebracht. Dit programma maakt het mogelijk om Windows-computers die over een trage of helemaal geen internetverbinding beschikken, toch van de laatste updates van Microsoft te voorzien. Door simpel een of meer besturingssystemen, officepakketten en talen aan te vinken, worden alle beschikbare updates van de ftp-server van Microsoft gedownload. Als de updates binnen zijn, wordt er naar keuze een iso-bestand per taal of per besturingssysteem van gemaakt. Via een cd of dvd kunnen dan vervolgens andere computers snel en eenvoudig worden bijgewerkt. WSUS Offline Update heeft ondersteuning voor Windows 2000 en hoger, en Office XP en hoger. Sinds de vorige vermelding in de Meuktracker zijn de volgende veranderingen doorgevoerd:

Moet ik voor het gebruik wel weten welke updates ik nodig heb, of "weet" het besturingssysteem automatisch welke updates er gebruikt mogen worden van de cd?

Ik ben het programma eens aan het testen omdat ik hier in Canada met downloadlimieten zit en ik een roedel oude Server 2008 VM's wil updaten. Echter, zo te zien laat het programma niet zien wat de totale downloadgrootte / het totaal aantal bestanden is. Het is dus maar afwachten wanneer alle downloads klaar gaan zijn: In 15 min of over 2 uur?

De download hangt voor een groot deel af van wat je allemaal aanvinkt.

Hier hebben we een eigen interne wsus server, ideaal voor alle machines die on-line staan. Dat is te zeggen, die beheer ik niet. Wel weet ik dat die machine 1 keer de updates bij microsoft weg haalt en door stuurt naar alle interne machines. Die hoeven geen internet toegang te hebben, maar wel netwerk toegang tot de wsus server.

De wsus offline update service haalt de bestanden uiteindelijk ook van de wsus server af (mits goed geconfigureerd ;-) dus die vergroot de download niet extreem.

Voor wat het waard is, de download van de wsus naar de wsus offline duurde op 10 juni iets meer dan een uur (over het interne netwerk, volgens mij 100 Mbit). De volgende op 22 juni duurde zo'n 4 uur. Mogelijk is dat een complete refresh geweest, en geen update.

Hierbij worden zowel Nederlands als Engels gedownload van alle windows en office varianten. De uiteindelijke iso directory (met alle isos dus veel dubbele data) is dan zo'n 34 GB groot, de usb directory (alles in 1 lokatie) is 13 GB. Ik vermoed dat er voort de eerste slag zo'n 13 GB is opgehaald.

UPDATE: je meldt oude w2k8 vm's? Zo oud is dat toch nog niet? :-) Maar voor die vm's, is dat VMware ESX (vsphere) gebaseeerd? Dan kan je ze volgens mij ook door VMware VSPhere laten bijwerken, kijk eens naar de update fasciliteiten die daar in zitten. Kan je zelfs machiens updaten zonder ze aan te zetten.

Nougoed, ze zijn oud in de zin van een jaar niet meer aan geweest en dus missen ze een hoop updates ;-) Bedankt voor de tip van vSphere's update mogelijkheden, dat wist ik niet. Deze specifieke VM's draaien echter in VMware Workstation.

Uiteindelijk was het een download van 600MB, viel dus nog wel mee. Meteen een leuke update-ISO voor volgende Windows Server 2008 installaties, scheelt ook wat bandbreedte in de toekomst

hat er al last van soms moest ik gewoon de net framework update handmatig achter af downloaden.
Eens kijken of het nu wel allemaal probleem loos gaat

lame, dus omdat er nog win 2000 support in zit... gaat de directx maar tot februari, dus als iets de dx9 june nodig heeft --> pech, kom je het alsnog manual te doen
