Asterisk is een zogenaamde PBX voor zowel de platformen Linux, Mac OS X, Sun Solaris als FreeBSD en OpenBSD. Het programma dient als een telefooncentrale en heeft een verscheidenheid aan mogelijkheden, waaronder voicemail, conferencing en het in de wacht zetten van gesprekken. Ook heeft het ondersteuning voor zaken als caller ID services, ADSI, SIP en H.323. Onder features op de Asterisk-site zijn alle mogelijkheden in een lijst weergegeven. Volgens de makers zal bètaversie nummer vier de laatste in zijn soort zijn, de finalversie van Asterisk 1.4.0 staat namelijk gepland voor aankomende vrijdag.
