Terwijl de versies van Skype voor Mac OS X en Linux nog steeds 2.0 niet hebben bereikt en dus mogelijkheden als videoconferencing en groeperen van contacten ontberen, worden de Windows gebruikers verder verwend met de eerste bètarelease van de volgende generatie. Skype heeft namelijk vandaag 2.5.0.72 beta voor Windows uitgebracht van zijn populaire VoIP-programma. Met dit programma kan gratis met andere gebruikers van dit programma worden gesproken. Ook kan er een abonnement worden genomen (SkypeOut), zodat bellen naar vaste- en mobielenummers mogelijk is. Versie 2.5 wordt met een lange reeks veranderingen en verbeteringen geleverd, de meest in het oog springende is de mogelijkheid om sms-berichten te versturen.
