Skype stelt je in staat om met andere gebruikers via Voice-over-IP als het ware te bellen. Hiervoor is geen abonnement nodig, alleen maar bandbreedte om de spraakdata over en weer te sturen. Het is ook mogelijk om een abonnement te nemen waarmee gebeld kan worden naar vaste- en mobiele-telefoonnummers in eigen land en naar nummers in het buitenland. Gisteren hebben de makers van Skype een nieuwe bètaversie beschikbaar gesteld die alleen geschikt is voor Windows 2000 en Windows XP.
