Athlon multiplier tweaking - het kan!

Door Femme Taken, 22 augustus 1999 23:0710 reacties, bron: Ace's Hardware

Big thanx to Sake die me richting Ace's Hardware stuurde, waar men nieuws heeft over een stel Japanners die hebben uitgevogelt hoe je de multiplier van de Athlon kunt veranderen:

Daiki has informed me of some very interesting developments over in Japan. It seems that the folks over at Bunny's Workshop have managed to overclock the Athlon 600 to 650 MHz without the aid of any special hardware! It appears that by modifiying a few of the pins on the Athlon, it is possible to change the multiplier settings.

This page (Overclock Technique - AMD Athlon) outlines the steps necessary to overclock the Athlon and includes pictures, though it is in Japanese. However, we will keep you posted on further developments regarding this discovery!

Guillemot Maxi Gamer Xentor 32 review

Tiger Investor nVidia interview

I also questioned Chris Hoberg about their fab process and she informed me that NVIDIA won’t be utilizing .18 micron this year, and that .18 micron will be used for another product in first quarter next year. This is very contrary to almost every NV10 preview on the net that was doing more speculation that actual fact finding. NVIDIA’s most advanced process right now is .22 micron. Since NV10 is now in production this is undoubtedly the process they are using. Also of note is the fact their CEO mentioned in the quarterly conference call that there will be two product announcements coming soon. Obviously one is the NV10. I’m curious as to what else NVIDIA has up their sleeve. Althans, zoiets wordt hieronder gesuggereerd: [/break] I started out by mentioning that NVIDIA puts all the time and resources into building the technology, drivers, and reference design and the board manufacturers add very little in terms of value. Simply put, the money that those boardmakers are pocketing on their products could be NVIDIA’s alone. To my utter surprise, their CFO completely agreed, saying, "We’re actually on a path to change that model a bit [their current model]. The acquisition of Diamond by S3 actually gave us a wonderful opportunity to do that. One of the reasons that we think going forward, for exactly the reasons you said, the board guys have diminished over the years in terms of the value-add that they’re bringing to the picture." - TigerInvestor.com

nVidia interview

PG: How will the advent of T-buffering effect the future of PC gaming?

Viet-Tam: The information released by 3dfx suggests to me that T-buffering is really nothing new under the sun. Basically when you want to do things like true full-scene antialiasing, motion blur, depth of field, you need to render several slightly different images and combine, average, or blend (same thing) them into a single image. From the beginning, OpenGL (for example) supported this by providing an "accumulation buffer"; an application can render several images into it, each image adding to the existing contents.

The downside to this is that it takes longer to render a single frame of animation, because you have to render the same geometry several times into the accumulation buffer to get the final displayed frame. What T-buffering seems to do is allow these multiple images to be rendered in parallel (at the same time) into separate buffers (collectively called the "T-buffer"?). Then some hardware reads these buffers and combines them together to produce the displayed image.

T-buffering is a slightly clever idea but it doesn't mean that you get antialiasing or motion blur (etc.) for free. Except in the case of antialiasing, you need to do different transformations for each image. Unless you have transformation and lighting (T&L) in hardware, in each of your parallel pipelines, your CPU is going to have to spend lots of extra time doing that, to say nothing of the extra bandwidth eaten up by sending all that extra geometry through your CPU <--> graphics chip bus (AGP, PCI, etc.).

Guillemot Maxi Gamer Xentor 32 review

Check Sharky's review hier:

As you can see the Guillemot TNT2 is fast. VERY fast. While at lower resolutions the performance gap is pretty much insignificant comparing the Guillemot board with Skywell's Magic TNT2 the difference becomes far more noticeable in higher resolutions. Especially so in 32bit mode where the higher clocked Xentor 32 provides a significant performance boost compared to the Magic board with it's lower 150MHz core. The high 30+ fps achieved in 16bit 1600 x 1200 Quake 2 Timedemo 1 particularly impressed me as for once a game with somewhat demanding graphics was actually quite playable at this high resolution. Even at 32bit, where the performance takes a dive due to the added fillrate strain, you could actually play the game without being too negatively influenced by the fps rate.

Mortyr preview

There were a few annoying quirks in the engine that definitely hampered the experience. First, the game seemed to speed up and slow down for no apparent reason - one moment you're walking normally, next it's warp speed and you are halfway across the room. Second, jumping was a bit difficult - it's hard to judge distances in FPS games period, but in Mortyr the problem seems more acute. Third, the aim has a weird bouncy effect. You'll turn, stop, but your aim will continue to turn for a few seconds; and when you jump, the crosshair really bounces around. Turning auto-aim off helps a bit, but that bouncy feeling is still there.

Sun koopt Star Division

Sun Microsystems is finalizing a deal to buy Star Division, a maker of a software suite similar to Microsoft Office, and it appears that it is off on a second attempt for desktop glory.

A deal to purchase Star Division was signed August 11, and an announcement is expected August 31, sources familiar with the plan said. Star Division makes two types of its StarOffice software, one type that runs on Linux, Solaris, Windows, OS2, and Mac OS, and the other, a thin client version of the software that runs on Java-enabled devices. The purchase price for Star is unknown at present.

Assuming the deal doesn't go awry, the acquisition of the German company would put Sun into more direct competition with longtime foe Microsoft. Microsoft's office suite is dominant on computers running Windows and Mac OS, whereas Sun's strength has been not with end-user software but with server hardware and software.

The deal would also lay important groundwork for a second attempt by Sun to get back into desktop computing. On September 8, Sun is slated to unveil a new line of "thin client" desktops which are similar but more robust than its ill-fated Javastation, according to sources. Star Division's software would essentially give Sun the applications that would make these desktops more attractive and useful. Currently, Sun makes workstations but not desktop computing units intended for office workers.

The Ultimate Controller Guide

This is the king of force-feedback driving wheels. In typical Logitech fashion, the WingMan Formula Force has one of the best grips a driving wheel could hope for. The 180-degree turn radius is perfect, and the clamping system holds it firm, though it's less convenient than the fashionable, quick-release clamps of other wheels.

The force feedback is excellent. The wheel convincingly replicates every force the game developers could imagine, from the whisper of damp pavement to the fierce pull of a sharp turn. The cable-pull motors relieve this wheel from the feeling of clanking gears present in most of its competition, and they also prevent any mechanical distraction from invading non-force-feedback driving experiences.

Nog meer info over Hercules faillisement

Door Femme Taken, 22 augustus 1999 02:2113 reacties, bron: The Adrenaline Vault

The Adrenaline Vault's source responded by saying Hercules' public relations and product manager as well as their CEO disclosed to him some of the reasons related to the shut down -- which they insist all center on financial woes. Additionally, the public relations manager, who authorized the initial report that the company was closing down, also discussed insider information deemed inappropriate for public consumption. According to our source, these reasons do not involve illegal activities. Hercules was not available for comment.

Details over Tomb Raider film

Tomb Raider fans will be happy to hear that a recent print issue of Variety tips that the producers of the film adaptation of the video game are now targeting a Fall 2000 release date. Actresses along the lines of Heather Graham, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Angelina Jolie and Elizabeth Hurley are being courted for the lead character Lara Croft, according to the trade. Charles Cornwall, Eidos chairman and an executive producer on the movie, has final casting and script approval.

The most recent screenwriters attached to the project, Patrick Massett and John Zinman, delivered a story that begins where the third Tomb Raider game ends. Lara Croft pursues the Achilles Shield in Antarctica and Asia in an effort to thwart a super villain's attempt to gain world domination by harnassing the artifact's powers. Stephen Herek directs and Lawrence Gordon produces the film, which will have a budget in the area of $80 million.

G4 Sawtooth AGP info

We've seen what a difference the G4's Altivec unit can make for 3D gaming on the Mac. Nearly as important to the everyday Quake III: Arena addict -- and the graphics professional, in 2D as well as 3D -- will be Sawtooth's other remarkable feature, the AGP graphics bus-based RAGE 128 PRO.

At the end of a trio of 64-bit PCI slots -- familiar to any Yosemite user -- sits a shorter brown slot. In it lies a prototype ATI RAGE 128 PRO graphics card, with similar muscle to today's Rev. B Yosemites, but sporting more SGRAM and more than twice the bus bandwidth.

To explore the advantages this 133MHz 2X AGP bus offers, we played both a developmental and forthcoming OpenGL-based 3D space combat game (nameless at the developer's request)....and rendered several new scenes for the game's movie sequences. The game was Altivec-enabled; the rendering software was not.

Head-to-head with a Yosemite (500MHz G3, Firewire RAID, 384MB of RAM), the Sawtooth (550MHz G4, UltraDMA/66, 384MB of RAM) bested it by 35 frames per second, and during heavy-action sequences with large ships moving nearby and many fighters in the fray offered far superior texture quality (the game reduces textures to maintain speed) and nearly a 60 FPS lead. The game itself was still unoptimized, and the developers believe once they prepare for the G4's superior FPU, they will be able to increase the performance of any G4 Mac by another 10-15%. They also believed there was more room for Altivec optimization if they found the time to devote to it. [/break] The same pair of machines, along with a dual 500MHz Pentium III computer machine running Windows NT, ran head-to-head renderings of a five-minute computer-generated video sequence from the game at a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. The Pentium III had a 100MHz motherboard, a RAGE Orion 32MB graphics card in its 2X AGP slot, 512MB of SDRAM, and a four-drive Ultra2 SCSI RAID.

The results were surprising, even considering how much we'd already been raving about the Sawtooth's performance. The Pentium III and the Yosemite were close, with the Yose only winning by about two minutes (30:42 vs. 32:47). The Sawtooth, however, even though the rendering software did not directly support Altivec, finished at 26.03 -- nearly seven minutes minutes before the Pentium, which had 128MB more RAM and a significantly faster drive array.

Daling 128-Mbit DRAM prijzen

While all eyes have been on the uptick in 64-Mbit DRAM prices in the last month, the plunging price tags of 128-Mbit chips have received little attention, except from delighted OEM buyers.

Suddenly, 128-Mbit chips are nearing the all-important point of crossover that signals price parity with 64-Mbit DRAMs. The American IC Exchange, Aliso Viejo, Calif., is reporting today that spot prices for 128-Mbit parts have hit new lows ranging from $14.65 to $16.46, compared with $6.35 to $7.30 for the most popular versions of 64-Mbit DRAM.

Analysts said falling 128-Mbit prices is a sign that surging supplies of the devices are starting to outpace demand.
