Onze vrienden uit Redmond hebben press release in elkaar getikt waarin ze vertellen hoe geweldig Windows Millenium (dat vage OS waar Betanews een paar dagen geleden de primeur mee had) gaat worden. Press releases mag je jatten, dus hier heb je 'm helemaal:

Microsoft today delivered to a select group of testers the first in a series of test-code releases for the next version of Consumer Windows, code-named Millennium.

With Millennium, Microsoft's newly formed Consumer Windows Division (CWD) will take an important step toward realizing its vision of simplifying the home computing experience. The CWD will focus its efforts on making the PC easier for first-time users and enhancing the experience of existing users by enabling new and exciting computing scenarios, such as digital media and entertainment and creating a connected home. Millennium, which is expected to be widely available to consumers next year, will be the first deliverable from CWD.

The Developer Preview is a pre-beta version of Millennium, consisting of the product's framework. Today, a targeted group of partners and beta testers will receive the code to begin evaluating Millennium from a technical 'backbone' standpoint and to provide Microsoft with valuable feedback early in the development cycle.

"The Consumer Windows Division is focused on truly making computing easy for consumers," said David Cole, vice president of the Consumer Windows Division at Microsoft. "We are excited to reach this first milestone on the path toward delivering a version of Windows specifically designed to enable consumers to take full advantage of their PCs in the 21st century."

As a result of extensive consumer research, Microsoft decided that the core areas of focus for the Consumer Windows Division over the next several years would be digital media and entertainment, the online experience, enabling a connected home and making the PC 'just work.' Millennium will make significant progress in each of those four key areas:

Digital Media and Entertainment: Digital media is becoming increasingly popular, as illustrated by the exponential growth in areas like music on the Web and digital photography. The Consumer Windows Division will focus on enabling users to take advantage of all this new content, making it easy to access, play/view and store as well as providing an enhanced PC gaming experience.

Online Experience: Providing consumers a premier home online experience is a primary goal for the Consumer Windows Division. This means ensuring consumers can easily connect to the Web, locate desired content and determine which content is right for their family.

Home Networking: With more than 15 million households now owning two computers and the cost of new PCs continuing to fall, as well as the many intelligent hardware devices being created, networking at home is becoming a reality for more people. The Consumer Windows Division will work to simplify the process of connecting multiple computers in the home, enabling them to share information and an Internet connection, and provide the infrastructure for connecting different intelligent devices to the PC.

It Just Works: The Consumer Windows Division is committed to providing consumers with a solution that 'just works,' from the moment a user starts their PC and throughout their daily computing experience. This promise will be delivered upon by the advancement of the PC's self-healing functionality, in addition to providing a simpler set-up and a great out-of-the-box experience for new computer users.

Vooral dat 'It just works' stukje vind ik wel een goeie grap .

Storage Review heeft een review van de Maxtor DiamondMax 6800 online gezet. De 6800 draait op slechts 5400rpm, maar heeft een capaciteit van maar liefst 27,2Gigs (ja, dat zijn maar liefst zevenentwintigkommatweeduizend megabijten, oftewel space voor 544.000 .jpgjes...). Hier een hap over de performance van deze drive:

When compared to the performance champ of the last generation, Western Digital's Caviar AC420400, the DiamondMax 6800 weighs in with mixed results. Despite its next-generation status, the 6800 trails the Caviar by 3% in Business Disk WinMark 99 tests run under Windows 95. The margin increases to 9% in the High-End WinMark. Windows NT is where Maxtor drives have traditionally flexed their muscles. True to form, the 6800 pulls ahead of the Caviar by 13% in the Business Disk WinMark test run under NT. Interestingly, however, the 6800 is the first Maxtor drive we've tested to post a High-End Disk WinMark that falls below its own score in Windows 95. Thus, the Maxtor actually falls behind the WD by a margin of 5% in the High-End test.

Nog een review van Hardwareinfo.net, met dit keer de IBM Deskstar 14GXP (7200rpm, 512Kb cache en UDMA/33)en 22GXP (7200rpm, 2Mb cache en UDMA/66) als slachtoffers:

De snelheid van de 22.0 GB harddisk is door zijn 2 MB buffer en de Ultra ATA/66 interface echt ongekend. De harddisk heeft verreweg de hoogste performance van alle harddisks die we tot nu toe hebben gezien. Bij de 14.4 GB uitvoering vinden we de ontbrekende Ultra ATA/66 interface echter, met het oog op de toekomst, wel een groot gemis. Hopenlijk heeft IBM met de 22GXP de standaard gezet voor de nieuwe 7200 toeren Ultra ATA/66 harddisks.

Het volk van de The Tech Zone heeft een review van Abit's nieuwe dual socket370 wonderplank gepost. Naast de mogelijkheid om er twee CPU's op te drukken beschikt de BP6 ook over een errug relaxe range busspeeds:

On the overclocking front the BP6 is the best motherboard I have seen for the Celeron community, giving you a wide assortment of Celeron overclocking options. As higher Celeron speeds come out, your multiplier settings are increasing as well.

This leaves you in a dry space when you think of overclocking, because your 83MHz FSB option no longer works. Your other option is only 75MHz so you are pretty much limited at setting the speed to your desire. The BP6 eliminates this problem by providing a wide assortment of FSB options for the Celeron including 66 / 72 / 75 / 78 / 80 / 82 / 83 / 84 / 85 / 86 / 87 / 88 / 89 / 90 / 91 / 92 / 93 / 94 / 95 / 96 / 97 / 98 / 99 / 100 / 103 / 104 / 106 / 108 / 110 / 124 and 133.

Koen van Hardwareinfo.net heeft een review gepost van de Creative Soundblaster 16 PCI. Dat klinkt als een PCI versie van de fossiele SB16, maar is toch echt de opvolger van de SB64 en SB128. Hier een stukje over de specs van de kaart:

De Sb16PCI kan gebruik maken van de General Midi geluidsbaken (de verzameling geluiden waarin de instrumenten voor MIDI-muziek zitten) t/m 8 MB. Hiermee ligt de kaart op het zelfde MIDI-geluidsnivo als de SB Live!. Sommigen zullen nu denken dat de kaart 8MB of meer geheugen aan boord heeft: dit laatste is echter niet waar. Door de PCI-uitvoering kan de kaart rechtstreeks gebruik maken van het standaard systeem-geheugen van de PC en zullen daarin de geluidsbanken worden geladen. Als je dus een grotere geluidsbank installeert zal de MIDI geluidskwaliteit omhoog gaan, maar zal de kaart wel meer geheugen opslokken en meer processor-tijd gebruiken. Hier staat gelukkig wel tegenover dat de kaart bus-mastering ondersteund, wat de gebruikte processor-tijd weer vermindert. Zaken als een 128-stemmige synthesizer en een MPU401 MIDI i/o-poort zijn uiteraard al lang standaard. Nieuw is overigens wel dat deze kaart geheel DirectSound en EAX compatible is, twee van de op dit moment meest gebruikte Geluids-API's. Hiermee zullen de nieuwe geluidseffecten in (3D)-games ook hoorbaar zijn op de SB 16PCI.

Andy van BXBoards heeft een review van de A-Top ATX kast op z'n site geparkeerd. Het gaat hier weer om zo'n zogenaamde design kast in iMac stijl, maar naar mijn mening is-ie die vergelijking onwaardig. Een iMac heeft stijl, dit ding is gewoon plain lelijk:

An immediate question was, "Will my heatsink fit under that P/S?" Well, I deployed an ABIT BM6 with an Alpha PFH6035MFC heatsink. It was tight.. but it fit. Alternately, I also successfully deployed ComputerNerd's FACMX2B heatsink. There is a removable 3 1/2" drive cage, able to hold three drives (including your floppy drive). I say the cage is removable, but the mechanism is impractical to do so. The anchor screw is only accessible from the 5 1/4" bays (and only then using a tiny, tinker-toy screwdriver) and the 3 1/2" cage had a fussy, tight fit. By the time I got it out, I wished I had just left it alone. A nice touch is the hash-mark stamping on the cage for drive placement ease. The drive cages and the motherboard platform are all braced and very solid. The materials used have a high-quality look and feel, with thick plastic and heavy guage metal. Fit and finish is nice, with rolled edges, snug component fit and no overspray from the external paint onto interior surfaces. My overall impression was that this case could serve as a load bearing member in your home.

FSP3D.com heeft een review gepost van de Abit BE6, troonopvolger van de BX6-II. Hier heb je een stukje uit de bespreking:

The BE6 comes loaded with extra features that can't be found on a non-Abit motherboard. CPU Soft Memu II, which most of you know about already, is present on the BE6, and makes overclocking a breeze. It's the same story for all Abit motherboards following the BH6. No tinkering with jumpers is needed, you can overclock straight from the BIOS. Along with CPU Soft Menu II, you get Abit's world-renowned temperature monitoring system, which I will go into later.

The BE6 doesn't have as many FSB speeds to choose from as the BP6, but it can still hang. Take a look: 66, 75, 83 (1/2 PCI Speed), 100, 105, 110, 112, 115, 120, 124, 133 (1/3 PCI Speed), 124, 133, 140, 150 (1/4 PCI Speed). The BE6 isn't exactly the overclocking king, but if you want to do some minor tweaking, the board is for you.

Zoals we van Apple gewend zijn is er veel aandacht besteed aan het design.

Wazig bericht bij CRUS: daar zeggen ze uit betrouwbare bron (Guillemot) te hebben vernomen dat de nVidia NV10 chipset al in september gereleased zal worden. Hier's de de soep:

Ik vind het allemaal nogal vaag. Er zijn nog erg weinig harde feiten over de NV10 bekend en een release volgende maand lijkt me dan ook niet erg realistisch. Een introductie prijs van $300 lijkt me ook moeilijk haalbaar aangezien de NV10 vrij kostbaar zal zijn om te produceren (veel transistors ivm T&L engine => grotere die size => hogere produktie kosten). Het zit ze bij Sony blijkbaar toch niet lekker dat ze de rechtszaak tegen de makers van Bleem! hebben verloren. De koffiejuffrouw kwam echter met een briljant idee: breng een Bleem! emulator op de markt! Huh? Lees mee:

Called simply "bleem! emulator!" emulator, Sony claims it accurately simulates the experience of using bleem! (itself a Playstation emulator) on a Playstation.

Earlier today, at appoximately 4:15 CST,my Pentium 3 450 that ran perfectly stable at 581 has bit the dust. The joy it brought to all of our lives has come to an end. I'll be holding a memorial service for it later tonight, and I will begin to wait for it's replacement to arrive... the AMD K7.

Overigens zal door deze tragische gebeurtenis de review van de MC1000 P3 cooler voor onbepaalde tijd uitgesteld worden.

Het systeem dat Windows 2000 gebruikt om gevoelige bestanden te beveiligen (Encrypted File System) blijkt makkelijk te omzeilen. Door Win2000 dubbel te installeren kun je de jezelf Administrator-toegang verschaffen en toegang krijgen tot "gevoelige" bestanden.

Today a whitepaper was released describing a way for any person to gain access to any file protected by Windows 2000's Encrypted File System (EFS). This vulnerability exists in all versions of Windows 2000, including the new Active Directory Services. Currently, there is no solution for this vulnerability, and Microsoft has not yet commented on it.
