Mitsubishi heeft geheugen aangekondigd dat vele malen sneller is dat het SGRAM wat nu op veel kaarten gevonden kan worden, om nog maar niet te spreken over de snelheidswinst t.o.v. SDRAM.

In een interview met Forbes laat Atiq niets los over de reden van zijn vertrek bij AMD.

Forbes.com: Yor resignation was very sudden. Can you tell us what prompted your decision? Atiq Raza: There comes a time when you know that what you want to achieve in life is not within the purview of the current job. I see more opportunities outside of AMD at this moment, and I am going to pursue them. What kind of opportunities are you talking about? I see around me how people interact with each other, do business and how we are entertained and the technology, more specifically the Internet, is right in the middle of it all. You seek a huge explosion in e-commerce, but beneath that surface are communication pipes and electronics, which are not capable of delivering on the complete promise. There is a lot of opportunity in this space.

iXBT heeft effe een comparison gemaakt van de laatste generatie videokaarten en hoe deze rakkers het doen onder Quake 3. In spring id Software didn't provide any testing labs with a modern tool for checking performance. This company traditionally releases the games, which in fact turn into standard benchmarks showing the gaming power of the system tested. The engines developed there are so popular and demanded among the game-makers that graphics cards manufacturers sometimes provide their products with Quake drivers and optimize them for higher performance of the whole system. Quake-games are almost the only ones, which manage to achieve fantastic realism and amazingly beautiful effects with API OpenGL. So, at present the comprehensive testing turns out absolutely impossible without Q3Test.

But, our day has finally come. During last two weeks we got even two versions of the so impatiently awaited Q3Test: first came out ver. 1.06 and then a bit later - ver. 1.07, which finally could boast the properly working integrated benchmark. We couldn't leave this occasion unnoticed and decided to take advantage of the case and to try all the today's graphics accelerators with the new benchmark. Judging by the results achieved in this test, we can now speak about the future of the graphics cards taking into account the coming release of the so long awaited Quake3 Arena. This game will undoubtedly become an unsurpassed blockbuster among computer games.

Er is inmiddels een oplossing gevonden voor het "lek" in de beveiliging van Windows2000 (kijk hier voor het desbetreffende nieuwsbericht)

Set up a recovery Agent AD Policy and REMOVE the administrator from the local recovery policy for ALL machines in your domain. In this scenario if a laptop with encrypted information is stolen that was part of the domain you could not log in as the recovery user (because you are not connected to the AD) and you could not change that users password because he would log in with cashed credentials when not on the network.

Goed, beloofd is beloof

Het was al wel algemeen bekend, maar nu heb ik het bevestigd gekregen. Volgende week komen de Celeron 500MHz en de Pentium III 600MHz uit. De Celeron zal nog gewoon draaien op 66MHz en GEEN SSE hebben.

Een gevolg hiervan is dat de Celeron's wederom in prijs omlaag gaan. Datzelfde geldt voor de Pentium II 450, PIII 500 (klein beetje) en de 550 gaat een heel eind omlaag.

Preciese prijsdalingen mag ik helaas niet geven, maar wacht gewoon even een weekje met opwaarderen

De Celeron 366 zal niet in prijs dalen. De 333 was officieel al dood verklaard, maar is nu helemaal geschiedenis. De 400 en 466 dalen allebei aanzienlijk.

Wat betreft de BX chip. Er wordt gezegd dat er zo'n enorm tekort is, dat was begin vorige week zo... In de komende twee weken zal de achterstand geheel worden ingehaald. Volgende week zal de gemiddelde consument er waarschijnlijk al weinig meer van merken (_als_ je er zowiezo al wat van zou hebben gemerkt zou ik het vreemd vinden De enigen die problemen zouden kunnen hebben zijn de dealers die geen PII borden binnenkrijgen )

Tot zover. Volgende week meer hierover en over de K7...

Voordat ik de beloofde posting over Intel plaats, eerst ff dit.

Op Dimension 128 vond ik een interessante rumor (dus enkel een gerucht!!) dat er binnenkort een 'Pro' versie uitkomt van de TNT2. Het gaat hier dus niet om de NV10, maar gewoon om een snellere versie. Zoiets dus als de Ultra. Nu had ik hier al iets van gehoord van iemand die wat met Elsa te doen heeft. Dit zou zeer goed de reden kunnen zijn waarom Elsa er voor heeft gekozen om te wachten tot 'eind juli, begin augustus' voordat ze de Elsa Erasor III Extreme uitbrengen.

There are rumors flying around about a TNT2a or "Pro" that can run faster than present TNT2's, I am not talking NV10 here, but TNT2 chips made in a new in a new TSMC plant.

Die TSMC fabriek waar ze het over hebben is er een die een .18 micron produktie proces biedt... Leuk!

Volgende week komt een medewerker van AMD naar Nederland met in zijn koffertje enkele K7-Athlon CPU's. Deze zullen dan als sample worden uitgedeeld aan ook de kleinere hardware leveranciers. Zelfs met de K6-III is dit in slechts beperkte mate gedaan, dus ook dit geeft maar weer eens aan hoezeer AMD het met de K7 wel goed probeert aan te pakken.
Overigens komt normaal gesproken alleen maar iemand van AMD langs bij de leveranciers als er een nieuwe roadmap aankomt en aangezien AMD zijn prijzen nog niet echt drastisch heeft verlaagd, verwacht ik daar volgende week ook melding van te kunnen maken. Doe dus nog ff rustig aan als je van plan bent om een K6-2 of K6-III te kopen.

Datzelfde geldt trouwens voor Intel CPU's, maar daarover in mijn volgende posting meer, dus lees die ook ff!

Maar goed, back on topic: K7.
Volgende week komt er dus een sample van het uiteindelijke product naar Nederland. AMD levert geen sample systemen uit, maar enkel een CPU. Zelfs geen moederbord. Zodra 'de leverancier' een moederbord van danwel MSI, danwel Asus te pakken heeft, mag ondergetekende een dagje langs komen. Blij, blij, blij!

Reken er dus maar op dat zeer binnenkort hier meer info en waarschijnlijk ook foto's van een K7+bord hier te vinden zijn, uit eerste hand!

KWSN Hardware heeft een artikel geschreven over de verschillende methodes om je videokaart te coolen. Best wel nuttige info, hier heb je wat info over de heatsink:

The most common type of video card cooling is the heatsink. They are usually made of aluminum which dissipates heat quickly. The heatsink takes heat off the processor and puts it into the air. A processor on its own has a surface area as large as its plastic slug (cover). A heatsink uses fins or pins to make the surface area larger, so it makes more contact with the air. The nicest heatsink on a video card that I've seen has got to be 3dfx's Voodoo3 3000.

Overclockers.com heeft een korte review van de Matrox G400 met 32MB geschreven. Staat eigenlijk niks nieuws in, maar als je hem toch wilt lezen, klik hier.

Matrox has always been known for their excellent 2D image quality and speed. The G400 keeps this tradition then some. I'm not going to bore you with terms like "Environment-Mapped Bump Mapping" or "256-bit DualBus Architecture" for these, you can go directly to the Matrox Website or check out one of the many other Hardware web sites that have or will review this card. All I will say is if you want something visually stunning, The matrox G400 definitely has the others beaten.

Cards like the Voodoo 3's and the TNT2 Ultras are clearly the winners as far as frame rates. If, however, you seldom play Quake or one of the other games, and you want awesome 2D and 3D Image quality, the Matrox card may be your better choice. The other cards have improved their image quality a bunch this last go round and so has Matrox leaving it the winner again.

Riva 3D heeft het tweede deel van hun NV10 report online gekwakt. Hier heb je er een stukkie van, de rest kun je hier vinden.

While that is undoubtedly good news, what about totally new titles that will specifically take advantage of ALL the NV10's power? Will we have to wait for months after the NV10's release in order to be awestruck by ultra-realistic visuals? Once again, the news is good, as there are definitely new titles being developed to take full advantage of the NV10 chipset. This has also been confirmed, and is not conjecture or rumour in any way, shape or form.

In the meantime, what about the TNT2? Will it be discontinued? Will it cease to be actively supported? Absolutely not! It's just too good a part to be relegated to the dustbin. There's a great deal more life left for those who already own one and especially for those who are thinking about getting one.

All in all, the NV10 excitement is building, and it wont be very long before we can all see first hand how much the NV10 will shake up the world of 3D graphics.

One of my biggest complaints of the Webcam2 was the fact that the camera had terrible image quality. This terrible image quality was actually quite horrendous and made the thought of video conferencing with the family or sending an image of your dog to the friend a no way. Now with the image quality of the WebCam3 being quite impressive, you will be happy to make some videos for the family and friends. Best of all the included WebCam Command software even gives you an album for keeping those videos on, allowing you to put your own albums together.

Intel heeft toegegeven dat ze de vraag naar BX en ZX chipsets niet bij kan benen. Daarom worden de prijzen met 20% verhoogd. Grootste oorzaak is de i810 chipset van Intel zelf. Die kampt nog met teveel problemen zodat moederbord fabrikanten teveel van de BX en ZX chipset gebruik blijven maken.

Intel appears to be unable to meet current demand for its 440BX and 440ZX chipsets and has been forced to raise prices by up to 20 per cent in an attempt to cope with the problem.

A Chipzilla spokesman confessed to US newswires that the company was indeed facing a shortfall of both chipsets, but claimed Intel is "working quickly" to meet motherboard vendors' demand for silicon.

Still, it only has itself to blame. Quality and production issues with Intel's 810 chipset, aka Whitney, continue to hamper motherboard vendors' plans to move away from the 440BX and 440ZX, so it's no wonder they're keen to continue punching out boards based on the older chipsets in ever greater numbers.

Thresh van FiringSquad heeft een artikel in elkaar geflanst over de nieuwe features in Q3Test v1.07. Een van de nieuwe dingen is o.a. dual processor support:

How pimp is this? We can tweak Q3test up to 130fps on our dual celeron 550 machine with r_smp enabled. It falls to 102fps when we disable it. More likely than not, if you're thinking "Why would I care about a 100fps cap, I only get 35," smp probably won't be any more enticing. However, for crazy techies or super-competitive types (no comment), the ability to tweak your game with more system processors is damned sweet. This is especially so since it acts more on smoothing out low framerates in highly processor intensive Crusher-like situations. I imagine if Q3 teams catches on, it'll be a huge boost with 8-16 players in a game.

Om ook voet aan de grond te krijgen bij de zogenaamde "Business Users" heeft 3dfx besloten twee nieuwe videokaarten uit te brengen onder de naam Velocity.
Hey, heb ik die naam niet eerder gehoord, zul je denken. Juist, STB heeft jarenlang onder die naam videokaarten op de markt gebracht en 3dfx wil van die naamsbekendheid gebruikmaken. Want STB = 3dfx tegenwoordig.
Hier heb je een stuk over de kaarten zelf;

Available now, the 3dfx Velocity 100 board is priced at $69 US list. The 8Mb, AGP 2X video card is capable of supporting resolutions of up to 2,046 by 1,536 pixels. Sharky Extreme heeft een review in elkaar gedraaid van Intel's nieuwste telg, de 600 Mhz versie van de Pentium III.
De grenzen van de 0.25 micron technologie worden zo langzamerhand bereikt, dus wat overklokken betreft hoef je niet veel spectaculairs te verwachten (hoewel, 660 Mhz is toch niet niks...)

For us, 660MHz (6.0 x 110MHz) was the maximum threshold that our P3-600 CPU would function reliably at. This is disappointing as the 110MHz FSB speed option is only available on a few newer mainboards, meaning that if you own an Abit BX6 R2.0 mainboard, for example, you'll have to shoot for 6.0 x 112MHz which we weren't able to obtain with stability. We utilized both the Intel retail heatsink/fan option that comes equipped on all retail P3-600 CPUs as well as a custom made cooling solution that we put together from a few spare fans and large heatsinks. Our cooler was only moderately more successful at keeping the P3-600's temperature lower than the already strong degree of cooling offered by the Intel unit. We achieved a lower temperature that equaled approximately 7 - 8 degrees F than the Intel unit, however it wasn't enough to allow multiple successful bootups into Win98 at 672MHz.

Groot nadeel is dus dat het ding (tenminste, Sharky's ding) het niet trekt op 112 Mhz FSB. 110 werkt wel, maar er zijn bar weinig moederplanken die die optie hebben.

Turbolinux, de belangrijkste Linux distributie op de Aziatisch markt, zegt Win98 en MacOS in Japan qua verkoopcijfers voorbij te zijn gegaan. Hier heb je de info van News.com:

TurboLinux's retail sales of its Linux version accounted for 24 percent of the sales during the week, the company said. In comparison, Microsoft's Windows 98--including upgrades--amounted to 22 percent, according to numbers from the Japanese market analysis firm of Business Computer News.

However, including academic versions of Windows 98, that number rises to about 30 percent, about 6 percent ahead of TurboLinux.

In addition, International Data Corporation analyst Dan Kusnetzky warned that looking at the first week that a new software product goes on the market isn't necessarily a good long-term measurement.

"There is almost always a peak very early on, and then it slows down," he said. "You can have a high point that isn't necessarily followed through with shipments after that."

Overclockin.com heeft een review gepost van de Swiftech MC2000 peltier cooler. Het ding ziet er behoorlijk heftig uit. Een PIII die met luchtkoeling 580MHz deed bleek echter niet stabiel op 600MHz gedraaid te kunnen worden:

So far, so good. Nothing that you wouldn't have expected given a processor that was already stable with air cooling at 580MHz. Now, what will happen once it is pushed to the next level? I set the system to use a 133MHz FSB with the 128MB DIMM from AZZO installed and fired the system up. The POST screen flashes up. All the drives are found. Next the Win98 splash screen comes up and the system freezes. Not what I expected. Just to verify that things were ok with the system, I popped in the 64MB DIMM of PC133 memory from Crucial and tried again. Same thing. Gets to the splash screen and freezes. Let's bump up the voltage and give it another try. 2.1V, same thing. 2.2V, same thing. 2.3V, same thing. Hmmm. What is going on here? This processor will run just fine at 580MHz @ 2.0V and won't even get past the splash screen at 600MHz? That just doesn't make sense. After a few conversations with Gabe over at Swiftech, he graciously sent me another MC2000 (the Rev. 2 version) just to make sure that there wasn't a problem with the unit I had. He didn't think there was any way that was the case, but wanted to make sure that I was able to test things out properly.

When I got in the Rev. 2 version of the MC2000 cooler, I proceeded to do the same tests with the same results. At 600MHz, it would get past the POST and freeze on the splash screen. Well, that seems to rule out a cooler that wasn't functioning properly. Since the Peltiers were definitely cooling the processor down significantly below room temperature (and below freezing if the processor isn't doing anything), what could be the problem?

After reading a few sites and posts about the cache chips on a PIII being a limiting factor (even though this processor has Toshiba 4ns cache chips rated at 250MHz), I decided to try it with the cache disabled to see if that was indeed the problem. With the cache disabled, the system booted up at 600MHz and ran Windows with no problems.

Een positief bericht bij The Tech Zone, daar hebben ze zo'n Celeron met "Uniprocessor-only" stickertje op de kop getikt en het ding blijkt niet SMP-gecastreerd te zijn!

Yesterday, many sites reported that Intel has disable SMP for Celerons because the box that these Celerons ship with says "For Uniprocessor Systems Only"

Well, I got two boxed celeron 500's here with that for uniprocessor only label on them. They work just fine in the BP6, and are both currently running at 585Mhz rock solid (78mhz bus) and I will try for an even 600 shortly.

It seems that the "For Uniprocessor Systems Only" label is just that. A label.
