| | The upcoming Release 4.1 adds some new device drivers, but the BeOS' big problem in the PC space is its lack of compatibility with users' add-in cards and peripherals.

I've managed to obtain the Abit BX6-2 Beta-BIOS that allows the Level2 cache latency of the CPU to be altered and also offers other goodies.
I've not had much chance to look at it, but its seems to offer some pretty funky features. Remember this is BETA so if you have any doubts about installing it, then don't :). I also have a Beta-BIOS for the BH6 too which offers similar functionality.

Hier een stukje over de L1 en L2 cache van de K7: The K7 has 128KB of 2-way set associative L1 cache, split into a 64KB instruction cache and a 64KB data cache. This is amazingly large when you consider it. It is four times as big as the Pentium III's L1 cache and twice as big as the K6-III's L1 cache. In fact, it is just as big as the Celeron A's level 2 cache!
The K7 also is capable of supporting various amounts of L2 cache at different speeds. It will be capable of anywhere from 512KB to 8MB of cache, with speeds ranging from 1/3 to full speed. (Actually, the 1/3 number was not mentioned in the talk, but it's been confirmed in enough other places that it is almost definitely true.) The possibility of including L2 cache on-chip was mentioned, but since there is already 128KB of L1 cache, there would probably need to be at least 512KB of L2 cache, and that isn't really reasonable with current technology. The support for high amounts of cache will be very appealing to server vendors and probably place the K7 in a great position against the Intel Xeon chips.

With the advent of overclocking, so developed the art of finding the best component to handle the job. Overclocking, in its purest sense, requires stability of components outside of their rated parameters. This is achieved with the highest level of engineering a production. You can see this in just how far a Celeron 300a CPU can be pushed. Because Intel over engineers and does an excellent job, pushing the Celeron to 450Mhz is common. Just as finding the right motherboard and CPU for overclocking is very important, so is finding ram that will run at the speeds you need. This leads to the quest of finding the ram that can run at the fastest front side bus speed. The following test was run on five PC100 and one PC66 Mhz SDRAM DIMMs.

Hier alvast een stukje uit de intro: In a changing field such as that of motherboard, the architecture based on Socket 7, introduced by Intel from Pentium CPU at 133 MHz on, can seem obsolete, just think how long it has been on the market. The success of AMD K6-2 CPUs and the performance expected by the AMD K6-3 show that Socket 7 is still alive. Of course this kind of architecture has changed parallel to the increase in the processing power of the CPU on Socket 7; for example, just think to the introduction of the bus frequency at 100 MHz and the support for AGP video card which allowed Socket 7 to keep up with the time. If the field of Socket 7 motherboard can be considered dead, its evolution won’t go on due to the release of the AMD K6-3; this said it can be stated that the Socket 7 motherboards currently on the market should represent the best products the production technology can offer to users who have Socket 7 CPUs. Which are the basic characteristic of a good Socket 7 motherboard?

Hier wat info van Chris' WinGlide Page: WinGlide v1.00 has been released. This version of WinGlide adds new capabilities to the Overlay WinGlide mode. It is now possible for Overlay WinGlide to clip overlays on video cards that use the ET6000 chipset and this version of Overlay WinGlide can work with video cards that use the PERMEDIA 2 chipset. No changes have been made to the other WinGlide modes in this release.
A note about PERMEDIA 2 overlay support
When I ran some WinGlide tests a month or two ago on a Diamond Fire GL 1000 Pro in Windows 98, I did not see DirectDraw overlay support being reported when using the latest drivers from Diamond. After installing the latest reference drivers from 3Dlabs, DirectDraw overlay support was present. If you get the error message "No overlay support detected." from Overlay WinGlide, the drivers you are using do not have DirectDraw overlay support. If you have a PERMEDIA 2 and find that the latest drivers from your card's vendor are not supporting DirectDraw overlays, you may want to consider using the Off-screen Surface WinGlide mode instead. This mode provides performance and features similar to Overlay WinGlide and it should be able to work with just about all of the PERMEDIA 2 based video cards out there.

Hoewel een low-cast plankje zitten er toch wat leuke features op: Despite its low-cost nature, there's a lot to cover on this motherboard! The most notable is how it breaks with tradition. The 440ZX chipset supports up to 256MB of RAM on four memory banks. A standard DIMM socket allows for two banks, one for each side of the DIMM. A one-sided DIMM takes up one bank, while a two-sided DIMM takes up two banks. From this configuration, you can see that it's possible to support 256MB by using two 128MB double-sided DIMMS (thus filling up all 4 banks).
Now it's not possible to up the maximum memory allocation of the chipset, but Abit did pull a stunt by splitting the 3rd and 4th memory bank between two DIMM sockets. What does this mean? Well, you still have 4 banks and the 256MB limit, but Abit's been able to implement this through 3 DIMM sockets. This means that you'll be able to use three DIMMS as long as their bank usage adds up to 4 banks, as sockets 2 and 3 share banks 3 and 4. This means you can have two double-sided DIMMs in slots 1 and 2, or 1 double-sided DIMM in slot 1 and 2 single-sided DIMMs in slots 2 and 3.

According to this information, AMD will shift the manufacturing process of the K6-III from 0.25 micron to 0.18 micron in the second half of 1999, but has not yet decided whether to perform that miracle on the K6-2, as yet.
The physical limit of the K6-III's 0.25 frequency is 550MHz and they already have 550MHz running on this process using a simulator.

Jammie! Hier de info van The Register: Samsung and API will move to a .13 micron process in 2001, while the EV68 platform, using aluminium interconnects, will achieve a one gigahertz clock rate by the end of this year.
That will be followed by a copper version of the EV68 platform which will have a clock speed of 1100MHz, also by the end of this year.
Towards the end of next year, the consortium will introduce the EV7 copper platform, with clock speeds of 1100MHz, while the EV8 copper platform is likely to arrive in 2001 with clock frequencies of 1400MHz.

Hier een stukje: Do you think that Metabyte's new SLI-like processing technology will revolutionize gaming or is it just a passing phase?
A revolution? No. 3Dfx has already introduced us to the idea of using more than one video card to upgrade performance. Metabyte is showing off a different implementation that can be applied to ANY graphics cards. Another interesting improvement is the ability to combine an AGP and PCI card. If it works, it's certainly going to give the educated consumer more flexibility in upgrading video performance. Meer info bij Gamer's Alliance.

Kickassgear, sponsor van AGN Hardware, heeft wat info over de plannen van Intel met de PII, die zoals het er naar uit ziet op z'n weg terug is: Intel now has 4 Processors in the production line; the Celeron (two formats, PPGA and SEPP), the Pentium II, the Xeon, and the Pentium III. It's getting a little crowded and it looks like Intel is about to do some Spring cleaning. It will probably be announced all over the web in the next few days, but it looks like the Pentium II is headed for Clearance City by the beginning of April. Expect massive price drops approaching 50% on the PII 400! That's nothing to sneeze at.
Our distributors are listing the Intel Pentium II with an arrival date of April 4th at just about half the price they are selling for right now. This is great news, becuase it puts the retail Pentium II 400 at the price range of the Celeron 400 right now! Oooooh. So for those of you considering upgrading to a PII 400 or 450, we suggest you wait just one more month, and you'll save a couple hundred bucks! We expect to offer BX6-2 upgrade kits based upon this processor, overclocked to 448, starting in early April for around $330! Stay tuned for more info. Kits made with the 450 overclocked to 504 would cost about $100 more.
