Intel's Data Security-Marketing gag?

Straight after I read about Intel's new plans to ensure higher data security over the Internet for e-commerce by implementing a identification number into their upcoming CPUs starting with Pentium III, I felt forced to consult Kim Schmitz, CEO of Data Protect GmbH, a business particularly focussed on data security. Data Protect is currently building up the introduction of their very own authentication procedure, known under the name 'Dapromas'.

Kim Schmitz and his team has a known expertise in this matter, he as well as the majority of his employees are former hackers. When I told him about Intel's new plan, he had thing more than a gentle laugh left over for it. Authenticating yourself with your computer system is a highly dangerous procedure.

It may not be known to most of you, but the weakest systems against hacker attacks are systems of end users that are connected to the Internet. Servers are often protected more or less professionally, systems of Internet surfers are wide open to any attack however, and in the most cases the user would never even notice it.

The hacker could access any e-commerce business directly from the platform of an end user, obviously using the CPU identification of the system of this user. Thus the so-called 'trusted, connected PC' is light years from safe or secure, as a matter of fact it opens hackers a completely new dimension.

This leads to the conclusion that Intel came up with this new idea for no other reason than for marketing. Doesn't it sound nice that you can make your system a 'trusted, connected PC' by simply dropping a Pentium III CPU into it? Wouldn't AMD's, IDT's or TransMeta's CPUs without this beautiful identification gimmick look as if they are 'insecure CPUs'?

Data security takes a lot more than a half-baked solution as the identification number of future Intel CPUs, the world's hackers are more powerful than most people realize and their power increases every day whilst more and more computer get connected. If we want to avoid that hackers abuse our information, then we should not jump on Intel's new bandwagon, we should give them a strong signal of disparagement instead.

7-way TNT Shootout.

Door Tweakers.net Nieuwsposter, 21 januari 1999 23:120 reacties, bron: The Riva Zone

PCTechware has slapped up a comparison of seven different TNT cards. They take a look at cards from Canopus, Creative Labs, Diamond, ELSA, Hercules, Leadtek, and STB.

It's a pretty detailed review altogether, going over different card features, bundle differences, and your other usual stuff. Give this one a looksie right here.

Daiki sends me a rumour he hears brewing about MSI which sounds quite interesting. He says that MSI got a K6-3 and tested it, and when they found out it was faster at 400MHz than a 450MHz PII they put a boost into their SS7 development.

Their new motherboards will (according to the rumour, of course) be based on the VIA MVP3 and will have 5 PCI slots and 3 or 4 DIMMs, as well as a bus speed possibly as high as 153MHz (this last part I'm skeptical about, but I wouldn't complain ). Also, a Micro-ATX version of this board may be slated for the new VIA MVP4 (which is an MVP3 with integrated stuff so it's for the low cost market).

Meer K6-3 feiten......

99/01/20, 5:35pm - Unfolding the mystery of AMD's

February, or at least blidly speculating about it. Chris Harrison suggests to me that if the February 14th date for Sharptooth (K6-3) is accurate, perhaps the 24th will be an announcement regarding Gateway. I do have to say that I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case - It almost looks like Gateway is holding out for the K6-3.

K6-3 feiten.....

99/01/20, 8:55am - Followup on that Taiwan site news:

According to KH (who sent it to me initially, thanks), they also talk about the K6-3 beating the Katmai by three weeks, so the "14" is likely not a typo, as has been suggested.

99/01/20, 8:50am - Here's the first somewhat reliable

K6-3 release info, I say this because it's from a Taiwanese news site ;). Take a gander here, where it is said: "AMD will release Sharptooth on Feb 14 in order to beat Katmai to the market". Hmmm, just a rumination ... If Sharptooth comes out on the 99/02/14, then what's up on the 24th? (an AMD representative has earlier stated that something will happen on that date)

3DNow! Support in the BeOS !

Door Tweakers.net Nieuwsposter, 21 januari 1999 22:340 reacties, bron: BE

There is minimal support for some aspects of 3DNow! in BeOS Release 4. More support may be added in the near future.

3DNow!, processor enhancement technologies developed by AMD and Cyrix, are not specifically on our list of things to add support for. Frankly, Intel processors dominate the market, so we're more likely to spend our limited time optimizing for MMX and Katmai. But if it's easy to do so, we'll do what we can, so it's somewhat dependent on programming support for these technologies.

Now that second paragraph is bs. E-mail BE here to let them know that you want better 3DNow! support! I am a BE user, and I sure as hell do!

AMD K7 prijsinfo

Here's some impromptu K7 estimations that I grabbed off of SI:AMD -- The K7, according to their resident guesstimator, thinks that AMD will have about 50k cpu dies produced (though not all packaged) by the time of the K7 release. There's a debate raging over there as to how much it'll cost AMD per die to produce, with the number ranging from $150 to below $100, based on the projected initial yields.

raphics specialist S3 has formally discontinued its Virge graphics acceleration chip thanks to lack of demand.

That leaves the company pushing its Savage3D accelerator against the likes of 3Dfx's Voodoo2 and nVidia's Riva TNT. Given both those companies' market and mind shares, S3 will have it's work cut out, though it should be encouraged by its recent design win with Fujitsu -- the Japanese giant is building Savage3D into its high-end multimedia PCs.

The once-popular Virge family allowed S3 to make major inroads into the OEM PC market. Of late, though, the company lost customers to more advanced 3D graphics technologies from the likes of ATI, which now pretty much rules the PC vendor market roost.

IBM Ultrastar 18ZX U2W SCSI review

Despite the shortcomings mentioned above, the Ultrastar 18ZX nevertheless managed to top the Cheetah 9LP in most test results. Performance of the IBM in WinBench 98 run under Win95 exceeds that of the Seagate by margins of 5%-7%. NT Business Disk WinMark performance is virtually identical between the two drives while High-End results have the nod going to the IBM with an 8% lead. ThreadMark results between the drives were very close. As one would expect, the Ultrastar 18ZX ran warm to the touch even when running in our testbed's PC Power & Cooling Bay-Cool. Active cooling is a must for this drive. The 18ZX's noise was also par for the course: Seeks churned away with the best of them, every bit as loud as previous generation models. Notably, however, we found the high-pitch whine of bearings a little less pronounced with the 18ZX than other 10k rpm units.

Anti-piracy software in Win2000

Microsoft is building anti-piracy software into Windows 2000, so forcing people to register their software it they want it to work, it has emerged.

Beta testers of Win2000 are vociferously crying foul at Microsoft for the feature.

According to reports in an online newsletter, the Registration Wizard feature in NT 5.0 could be extended to all software products the software giant produces.

One member of the forum said: "I predict that Microsoft will use this anti-piracy technique with all its products."

He and others are complaining that the Wizard will let you launch the software 50 times and that's it. Unless you've registered the product, the CD ROM will never work again.

New TNT reference drivers in sight. NVIDIA will release a new diver next time that will bring a major performance increase. It is expected to get an increase of partly 20 to 25% in Direct 3D. 3DMARK99 climbs from ca. 2100 to 2480 (Drivers preversion 1006)

Rumors speak that the announced nVidia TNT-2 chip will be faster than expected and that it will be faster than Voodoo3. Including features like 32MB memory, 32Bit rendering (as TNT allready can do today), AGP 4x and digital output for flat panels, Voodoo3 wonŽt have chance to compete with. But there was no offical statement about the features of TNT-2 by nVidia yet. ThereŽs also no release date for TNT-2 yet, speculations speak of CeBitŽ99 as date in Germany.

Diamond Fireport 40 review

think most clear-headed but slightly cynical users will not believe upstart Diamond could put out a better SCSI card than industry veteran Adaptec. I hate to break it to you guys, but the FirePort 40 creamed the Adaptec 2940UW in all tests. How can this be, you ask? Well, I really can't say, but I think Adaptec may have been a bit too sure of themselves and didn't bother to optimise it anywhere near as much as Diamond did. Little speed tweaks and the like. One would think this could cause instabilities, but I disagree. I have been running the FirePort 40 for months now (this review is a bit late coming, as we were waiting on a 2940UW) and not once experienced any sort of problem with the FirePort 40.

Pentium III technology brief

ther than the 71 new Streaming SIMD Instructions or KNI, the Pentium III is basically a Pentium II, for now.  When AMD released 3DNow!, people were amazed that such a boost in Quake II performance from a few new instructions could be accomplished. But Quake II is a special case. The reason Quake II saw such an improvement from 3DNow! was because of its FPU (Floating Point) dependence. 3DNow! basically improved the way AMD CPU's handled FPU instructions, which gave Quake II a nice performance boost. The reason why this was so important to AMD was because of the fact that their CPU's have a somewhat weak FPU. Unfortunately not all software benefits so greatly from 3DNow!, but FPU intensive software does. When Intel saw this, they knew they had to do something to combat it. 3DNow! gave AMD a great marketing strategy similar to Intel's MMX campaign. Now, KNI is Intel's answer to 3DNow!.  Oh, and under normal conditions AMD's K6-2 processors are significantly slower in Quake II performance than Intel processors at the same MHz.

Tom's CPU update

I spoke to Dana Krelle, AMD's vice president of marketing, and he gave me the latest scoop on AMD's plans. K6-3 is supposed to ship very close to Intel's Pentium III launch. AMD is trying to release this new CPU with 256 kB on-die L2 cache already prior to Intel's Pentium III release. Most of you know that K6-3 will run on the same Socket7-motherboards that currently host K6-2 CPUs, you may only require a BIOS update. The performance of K6-3 will be high enough to make it very competitive to Intel's Pentium III, the K6-3 version at 450 MHz will most likely outperform the new Pentium III 500 in many benchmarks. The highly official version says that K6-3 will definitely ship in Q1/1999, but we know that Q1 ends on March 31. Let's hope K6-3 will be available earlier than this.

Intel told me today that the current Celeron processors are not bus clock locked and that there are currently no plans to implement this on Celeron. This means that you can continue to overclock Celeron CPUs, but please remember that the clock multiplier is locked and will stay locked. The same is valid for Pentium II CPUs. You will understand that there was no official comment on Pentium III and later Intel CPUs. Those may be completely overclock protected. We will find out as soon as final Pentium III CPUs become available at the end of February.

Skywell Banshee review

Moving on to the 3D bit we find the TwinPower to be quite capable if nothing ultra special. Based on the Voodoo Banshee it comes fully packed with a nice 3D feature set including tri-linear filtering, anti-aliasing and sub-pixel accuracy. The Voodoo Banshee is essentially a cut-down Voodoo2 'in disguise'. It comes with a core clock of some 100Mhz, which is roughly 10% higher than on it's sibling (the Voodoo2) but it lacks the dual TMU design. The lack of the extra TMU cripples performance in titles that require multi-texturing. This might sound like a serious problem but it's not, unless you are a die-hard fan of Quake II and other 3D first person shooters of that caliber that is.

Supposedly according to tomshardware's board and compusa and bestbuy salesstaff diamond has cancelled the mx300...that is why they are selling it so cheap...

Knowing diamond and their STELLAR tech support and super fast rebate program (NOT) good luck to anyone who has bought the card.

Llet me know if anyone can confirm or deny this...i went to two different compusa stores (here in Illinois) and they both said the same thing!

Well i dont know if it is completely pulled but i went to compusa and they told me that they were told not to sell the product...

When i asked why they said that first of all the card had been returned over and over again and second of all diamond discontinued the card.

They didn't tell me why diamond did this and when i asked the guy just shook his head and said diamond didnt tell them...this was on saturday afternoon.

So if anyone finds out id be interested b/c i wanted the card but im not going to buy it now...especially with all the problems everyone seems to be having...oh well diamond loses another customer for another product!

Remarked processors are becoming a widespread occurence and if you own a Pentium II the following information will be very important to you.

Q: What's a remarked chip?

A: If you've been reading the reports in the overclocking community lately, then you are aware that Intel's use of the same cores up and down the line of Pentium II's (meaning essentially that a PII300 SL2W8 is the same inside as a PII 450) This means that it is possible to buy a PII300 and overclock it to 450.Check the Overclocking FAQ on this page for more info. Some dishonest people actually remark the 300's as 450's and sell them to unsupecting customers at what seems to be a great price.

Q: Could I have a remarked chip?

A: Yes, first of all, you should ALWAYS check the casing of a new PII, and look to see if the serial numbers and logos appeared to be altered.

Q: Could it look ok and still be remarked?

A: Yes, remarkers can change the exterior of a PII without leaving man easy-to-see abnormalities.

Q: Any other way to visually check my PII if I suspect that it has been remarked?

A: Yes although it's risky, and a lot more difficult. You can open the casing of your PII and look for things soldered to the motherboard. Instructions on how to open the casing of your Pentium II can be found here. An example of a remarked chip can be found here, that shows that even the experienced can't always tell a fake PII from a real one. It also has some nice pics of an opened PII with "something" soldered to the PCB.

Q: How else can I check my processor?

A: There is a program available called CTP2INFO. This test checks the speed of your processor and attemts to verify that it is running at the correct speed. It was designed by the German computer magazine C't.

Q: Where can I get CTP2INFO?

A: Well you can get it from the MaximumPC CD or you can download it here.

Q: How do I use CTP2INFO?

A: Well, on the MaximumPC CD, just hit the icon and you're off, if you downloaded it, just unzip it, then run the program. It will automatically run and tell you what you've got.

Q: What wil it say if my processor is remarked?

A: If you look at the picture above, you'll see where it lists default bus speeds, system speeds, and some other info. Basically, if you are running a PII300, and it does not detect ECC in the L2 cache, you have a remarked processor and need to contact Intel immediately. If you are running a 350-450 mhz processor on a 100mhz FSB, and CTP2INFO reports that your default is 66.7 mhz, then you also , likely have a remarked processor and should contact Intel.

Highlights include:

* Advanced network routing and WAN support, which gives Linux the ability to replace many expensive proprietary network devices. Users can take control of their intranet with priority traffic, usage limits, accounting, and virtual private networks. Strong 256-bit encryption is available as an add-on component.

* New Euro support and a tradition of Y2K readiness positions Linux 2.2 as an international operating system ready for the new millenium and beyond.

* Enterprise-level network filesystem support, complete with data replication for performance, mobility, and reliability.

* Video capture support, TV tuner support, enhanced audio support, and other multimedia enhancements.

* Support for a large variety of parallel port devices including disk drives, tape drives, and other easy-to-use external devices.

* The already legendary linux performance is significantly enhanced. High end SMP scaling gives good performance on 12 processor machines. Linux 2.2 supports up to 64 processor systems.

* With compatibility for BSD and Windows NT filesystems, Linux 2.2 helps you leverage your existing UNIX and NT data today, and provides you with a strong upgrade path from your existing Windows NT systems tomorrow.

the demand for PC133 RAM may grow because it is feared that RDRAM will be in short supply this year. Even Intel is preparing for the possibility by building in backwards compatibility for SDRAM in their Camino chipset

Microsoft changed the upcase table format on NTFS partitions in SP4 and NT5. This was done after Partition Magic 4.0 released. We have updated our code to match Microsoft's changes, but the fix won't be available until the PM4.01 patch is released at the end of January.

Dank daarvoor...

The biggest question on everyone's mind is overclocking - does this board offer anything new over the current king, the BH6? In short, yes! Here's the skinny of it. Abit has taken overclocking yet another step over, by providing clock multipliers from 2x all the way up to 8x! This won't do much good with current CPUs since most are multiplier-locked at the factory. However, it does mean that the BX6 2.0 will likely have support for future processors, and you won't be suffering from a lack of multiplier settings.
