Software-update: Sun Java 5.0 update 8

java logoSun heeft een nieuwe update klaargezet van zijn platformonafhankelijke objectgeoriënteerde programmeertaal Java, evenals de zogenoemde Runtime Environment om Java-progamma's te kunnen draaien. Het gaat dit keer om update 8 van de 5.0-reeks, die via deze pagina voor Linux, Solaris en Windows gedownload kan worden. Sun brengt Java onder een eigen licentie uit, die hier gelezen kan worden. Update 8 brengt een groot aantal veranderingen met zich mee, welke dat precies zijn kan onderaan deze meukpost gelezen worden:

Wat een aandacht besteden ze nog aan versie 5.0, omdat ik hier al een tijdje draai op Bèta 2 van V. 6.0.

Je zou eigenlijk uit die richting wat nieuws verwachten.
Die Bèta draait overigends zeer goed en soepel/snel.

Omdat in het bedrijfsleven vrijwel nergens Java 6 gebruikt wordt, maar Java 5 (en ook nog een hele hoop Java 1.4, en wie weet nog 1.3).

Je denkt toch niet dat bedrijven, met business critical systemen gaan draaien op een beta versie? Of zelfs niet op een pas uitgekomen 6.0 wat dat betreft.

Idd. Sterker nog: ik ben bij onze klanten nog nooit Java 5 tegengekomen. Ik denk dat bij onze klanten voor 75% Java 1.4 en voor 25% Java 1.3 gebruiken (vooral banken en verzekeraars).

Pas sinds een paar maanden is bij onze laatste klant WebSphere 3.5 met Java 1.2 eruit gegaan en vervangen door WebSphere 5.0 met Java 1.3.

Dus ik verwacht zelf dat wij de komende 4-5 jaar nog wel Java 1.3 zullen ondersteunen. Daarna 4-5 jaar Java 1.4, en daarna kunnen we generics gaan gebruiken :)

Veel problemen die hier gefixt zaten natuurlijk ook in Java 6. Bovendien duurt het nog wel even voordat Java 6 gemeengoed wordt, dus is het maar goed dat ze de problemen in v5 aanpakken.

Aangezien de MS JVM al obsolete software is, en ook nooit Java 5 ondersteund heeft, lijkt het me zinvoller om de Sun implementatie te installeren.

Microsoft Virtual Machine is al een tijd geleden gestopt met updates... Zat op 1.38 oid. Toen der tijd vond ik Sun's Java nog wat traag lopen, maar bij de nieuwe versies is deze snelheid enorm verbeterd, zeker met versie 6 (Deze is idd nog bèta).

Microsoft is bijna veroordeeld omdat MS jvm niet netjes deed wat het moest doen, maar expres incompatibel was.

Uiteindelijk heeft MS 300 miljoen aan SUN gegeven als schikking samen met de belofte geen JVM meer uit te brengen. (want SUN vertrouwd MS niet meer)

MS was gewoon uit op het stuk maken van Java ten behoefte van dotNET en andere zooi.

MS was er niet op uit om het stuk te maken tengunste van dotNET. Het was de bedoeling om de gedachte van "Code once, run everywhere." om zeep te helpen. Ze probeerden nieuwe dingen in te bouwen die alleen op Windows zouden werken.

Op die manier zou er een Windows Java en een De rest Java ontstaan. Om begrijpelijke redenen was Sun hier niet zo blij mee.

Dit zelfde zie je nu ook bij CSS. Filter:progid:dximagetransform.microsoft.gradient bijvoorbeeld. Het is de bekende copy and extend politiek van Microsoft.

Hoe bedoel je 'eindelijk' eens?

Er was al een significante performance boost van 1.4.2 naar 5.

Java 6 komt ook weer met de nodige performance verbeteringen. Ik draai nu beta 2, en hoewel ik nog geen ecpliciete benchmarks heb gedaan, merk ik dat Tomcat met Java 6 een stuk sneller opstart. Normaal (met Java 5) is dat nooit onder de 20 seconden bij mij (in debug mode) en nu met Java 6 beta 2 rond de 12 a 15 seconden.

Hoe zit het nou eigenlijk met versies? Ik daar een beetje van in de war... ik dacht dat we bij versie 1.5 waren en ik gebruik 1.4. Wat is dan versie 5? Hebben ze de '1.' ervan verwijderd of is er meer aan de hand?

Version 5.0 is used in the platform and product names -- the leading "1." was dropped. Where you might have expected to see 1.5.0, it is now 5.0 (and where it was 1.5, it is now 5).
Due to significant popularity within the Java developer community, the development kit has reverted back to the name "JDK" from "Java 2 SDK" (or "J2SDK"), and the runtime environment has reverted back to "JRE" from "J2RE". Notice that "JDK" stands for "J2SE Development Kit". The name "Java Development Kit" has not been used since 1.1, prior to the advent of J2EE and J2ME.

As before, the "2" in Java 2 Platform Standard Edition indicates the 2nd generation Java platform, introduced with J2SE 1.2. This generation number is also used with J2EE and J2ME.
J2SE also keeps the version number 1.5.0 (or 1.5) in some under-the-cover places that are visible only to developers, where the version number is parsed by programs. In these cases, 1.5.0 refers to exactly the same platform and products numbered 5.0.

Java 1.2 werd al vanaf het begin "Java 2" genoemd in de volksmond, omdat er inderdaad veel verbeteringen waren. Met Java 1.5 vonden ze dat ze die truuk nog wel weer eens een keertje konden uithalen. De verschillen met 1.4 zijn er natuurlijk, maar ik vind het allemaal niet zo schokkend om er maar gelijk "java 5" van te maken.

Heel vervelend, want aan de developerskant wordt nog heel vaak "1.5" gebruikt.

De versienummering van software vind ik tegenwoordig verre van logisch. Voor kleine wissewasjes gooien ze er een nieuwe major versie tegenaan.

Als alle veranderingen die in Java 1.4 naar 1.5 gedaan zijn geen rechtvaarding zijn voor een nieuw major versie nummer zijn, wanneer ben je dan wel tevreden. :Z
De uitbreidingen waren aanzienlijk:
Generics, enums, autoboxing, varargs, annotations, nieuw for/in statement, static imports, formatting en betere threading.
Het feit dat deze veranderingen bijna allemaal over de syntax van de taal gaan en niet alleen uitbreidingen aan de API zijn, zoals vorige versies, lijkt mij wel meer dan genoeg reden om Java 5 te mogen gaan heten.

Kijk maar naar Solaris, daar zie je ook nog steeds versie 5.10 terwijl het solaris 10 is.

Microsoft doet het trouwens met Windows ook. We zitten nu ook op versie 5.1 van Windows (ookwel XP genoemd).

Update via control panel geeft nog steeds aan dat 1.5 update 6 de laatste versie is. Lopen wij een beetje voor, of loopt een gedeelte van Sun.com achter?

toch vreemd dat als je Sun Java wilt updaten vanuit java zelf (configuratie scherm) 1.5.0.6 de laatste versie blijft en hij niet 1.5.0.8 vind. Versie 1.5.0.7 werd op die manier ook al niet gevonden.

De "java"-site van sun loopt nu wel heel erg achter. Zowel via auto-update als via http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp krijg je nog steeds 1.5.6 aangeboden.

Als je dit soort fixes hebt "hotspot compiler2 Occasional performance degradation by factor of 3" en "java_deployment compression Pack produces corrupt classes" dan wil je toch dat iedereen de laatste versie gebruikt.

En natuurlijk moet je er gewoon voor zorgen dat ALS je een auto-update functie inbouwt deze ook AUTO-Update

Update 7 werd vlak nadat hij uitkwam (begin juni) wel gevonden, maar iets later niet meer.
Dat, samen met de wel HEEL rappe uitrol van 8 doet mij heel donkerbruin vermoeden dat update 7 niet helemaal goed was. :+

Bij mij draait het ook super, alleen maakt geen enkele applicatie die ik gezien heb er gebruik van. Ze kunnen allemaal Java niet vinden omdat ze de 32bits versie zoeken.

Java 64bits heb ik al gekicked, nu Win64 bit nog. Nul meerwaarde tot dusver en nog steeds geen Flashplayer in IE-x64.
