Firmware-update: Asuswrt-Merlin 3006.102.9

Asus gebruikt voor zijn routers, zoals de RT-BE88U en RT-BE92U, een van Tomato afgeleide firmware met de naam Asuswrt. Deze firmware is, op enkele drivers na, opensource, waarbij de gesloten binaries wel meegeleverd worden. Asuswrt-Merlin is op zijn beurt een aangepaste versie van de originele firmware van Asus. Het bevat onder meer bugfixes en kleine verbeteringen, maar probeert toch dicht bij het origineel te blijven, zodat het mogelijk blijft om nieuwe features die Asus introduceert, toe te voegen aan de code. Versie 3006.102.9 is uitgekomen en hierin zijn de volgende veranderingen en verbeteringen aangebracht:

New:

• Migrated all devices to OpenSSL 3.5 (except GT-BE19000AI, which was already on that version). For closed source components linked against OpenSSL 1.1.1, a shim was developped to pretend being the openssl 1.1.1 library, redirecting calls to the actual 3.5.x library. A similar shim for 1.0.0 was also implemented for the RT-BE58_Go's Trend Micro HNS engine.
• Hardware-accelerated AQM QoS implemented, using Broadcom's traffic manager. Wifi 6 devices will use the WRED algo, while Wifi 7 uses PI2. This is not compatible with BCM676x devices, like the RT-BE92U or RT-BE58_Go. AQM helps reducing bufferbloat through improved queue management. This will only affect the Upload, as Asus is already applying queue management on the downstream using another Broadcom engine. It is recommended to set your upload speed to around 95% of your real upload speed. It only works for dhcp/static mode (so, no PPPoE).
• Wireless Log will now report infos for Repeater, Media Bridge and WISP upstream link
• IPv6 support in Tor. Previously, any IPv6 traffic would leak outside of the proxy.

Updated:

• amtm to 7.0. (decoderman)
• tor to 0.4.9.11.
• OpenSSL 3.5 to 3.5.8.
• OpenVPN 2.7.7.
• zoneinfo data to 2026c.

Changed:

• Kernel backports to mark the B53-based CPUs as not being vulnerable to Spectre V2 and Meltdown. This tells the kernel to skip software mitigation, avoiding their associated performance penalties.
• Tweaks to OpenVPN Server and Tor pages. Use the new CSS radio switcher instead of old switcherplugin.
• Stop forcing FTP TLS to be (re-)enabled after a firmware upgrade.

Fixed:

• Wireless Log not working while in WISP mode.
• Wireless Log issues while in Repeater and Media Bridge modes.
• Interface selection missing from Speed Test (GT-BE19000AI)
• AdaptiveQoS Bandwidth Monitor shwowing the wrong traffic rates (patch from Asus)

Het lijkt er op dat er langzaam een einde komt aan Asuswrt-Merlin: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/announcement-asuswrt-merlin-will-not-be-supporting-wifi-8-models.97913/

En dat is volgens mij de schuld van ASUS. Die brengen zo ontzettend veel modellen uit dat een hobbyproject als dit niet eindeloos levensvatbaar blijft. Zoals Eric stelt: 'Having done this for 14 years already, I no longer have the energy or the motivation to do this for another 6 years. Doing this used to be a fun hobby. Truth be told, it feels more like a chore these days, another job beside my daytime job, except the daytime job actually earns me a living.'

Daar helpt zelfs de jaarlijkse bijdrage die ik en vele anderen doneren niet echt.

Het is jammer, maar er zijn gelukkig zat alternatieven voor wat geavanceerdere router-firmwares dan die van de fabrikanten zelf. Voorlopig blijf ik deze nog wel gebruiken, want in menig opzicht is de community rond Merlin-FW een verademing (als in: behoorlijk toegankelijk, ook voor beginners), maar als het einde nadert zie ik me wel overstappen naar iets als PF- of OPNSense. Daar heb ik al eerder mee geëxperimenteerd.
