Software-update: SpamPal 1.58

Op de website van SpamPal is een nieuwe versie van het gelijknamige anti-spam-programma te vinden. Het programma controleert de e-mail en zal spam als zodanig markeren. Deze markering kan dan vervolgens in je favoriete e-mailprogramma worden gebruikt om een filter aan te maken die deze e-mail bijvoorbeeld in een aparte folder zet of direct weggooit. SpamPal kan overweg met zowel POP3- als IMAP4-accounts en gebruikt onder andere DNS-blacklists en een Bayesian filter om zijn werk te doen. De installatie wordt geleverd met RegExFilter 2.7 en UrlBody 0.04 plugins, meer plugins kunnen op deze pagina worden gevonden. Het changelog van versie 1.58 ziet er als volgt uit:

Changes in 1.58:

• Fixed issue that had suddenly started causing crashes, usually at the "Filtering message headers" stage - this may have been exacerbated by Windows XP Service Pack 2.
• The installer had somehow become broken, and wasn't creating the shortcut in the Startup group correctly, which meant SpamPal wasn't automatically running at startup - fixed.
• Hopefully fixed bug that caused plugins to claim that they needed a "later" version of SpamPal when it was already installed.
• IMAP4: No longer displays "Mailbox does not exist" error in pop-up dialog
• IMAP4: A bug in Microsoft Exchange's implementation of IMAP4 causes messages to be corrupted after they're rewritten by SpamPal if they use anything other than a tab as a line continuation character in the headers. SpamPal should now detect Microsoft Exchange and turn all line continuation characters into tabs if it's rewriting a message, to get around this bug in some cases.
• Tweaked some of the default settings to hopefully improve performance for new installs.

Outlook 2003 heeft ook iets derglijks al ingebouwd, heeft dit programma dan nog nut om te instaleren?

Ja, want dat spam filter van outlook 2003 leert niet en er komt tegenwoordig al behoorlijk wat spam door heen (bij mij iig). De SPAMmerts weten blijkbaar al hoe dat filter omzeild moet worden. Een bayesian filter leert wel en past zich dus aan als de SPAM verandert.

Het is altijd beter een apart (dus gespecialiseerd) programma te installeren dan iets wat ergens wordt bijgeleverd als "extratjuh". Althans, dat is mij de laatste jaren opgevallen.
