Software-update: Total Commander 9.00 release candidate 1

Na zeventien bètareleases is nu de eerste release candidate van Total Commander versie 9.0 uitgekomen. Dit programma kan als vervanging voor Windows Verkenner worden gebruikt. Doordat het beeld in tweeën is gesplitst, is het eenvoudig om bestanden te kopiëren, maar het programma kan veel meer. Zo zijn er diverse manieren om bestanden aan te passen, zijn een ingebouwde ftp-client en een multirename-tool aanwezig, en is er ondersteuning voor een groot aantal compressieformaten. Verder kan de functionaliteit met plug-ins worden uitgebreid. Het programma is klein en hoeft niet geïnstalleerd te worden om het te kunnen gebruiken, dus het is makkelijk om het overal te gebruiken.

In versie 9 treffen we onder meer een paar cosmetische wijzigingen aan. Zo worden er nu systeemiconen gebruikt in plaats van de interne en is er een nieuwe menubalk tussen de twee bestandsschermen geplaatst. Verder zijn er een groot aantal kleine verbeteringen aangebracht. Volgens Christian Ghisler is de release candidate inmiddels stabiel genoeg voor dagelijks gebruik, maar moeten er nog enkele kleine plooien gladgestreken worden. De changelog voor deze uitgave ziet er als volgt uit:

• Lister: Store position separately for separate quick view (Ctrl+Shift+Q): wincmd.ini [Lister] QuickX,QuickY,QuickDx,QuickDy, QuickMaximized (32/64)
• Bitlocker dialog: Checkbox to not show that message again. If the user then clicks Yes, the bitlocker password dialog will always be shown, otherwise never (fails with an error) (32/64)

Fixed:

• Show list of local drives when connecting via RDP (remote desktop) - use WTSRegisterSessionNotification to be notified when remote desktop connection starts/ends (32/64)
• Resizing main window could cause half-drawn icons in vertical button bar with icon size=button size (32/64)
• Abort running commands from view modes when holding down ESC key (32/64)
• Crash showing certain dialogs when changing locale while TC is running, and ANSI sort order is different (e.g. Czech: CH sorted after H -> resource order changes) (64)
• Folders in search results were not sorted by the natural sorting method e.g. 'CH' after 'H' in Czech (32/64)
• Multi-rename tool: New option to auto-rename to "name (2).ext" etc. didn't work if one of the renamed names was the same as an existing file name not changed by the rename options (e.g. test_a_.txt test_b_.txt, replace _a_ by _b_) (32/64)
• Auto view mode switch set for a dir with subdirs (e.g. c:\dir\*\), go to c:\dir, locked but directory changes allowed, go to subdir, switch to different tab -> view mode was lost (32/64)
• Synchronize dirs: Comparing 2 RAR archives by content was no longer working correctly (32/64)
• Bitlocker dialog and registration screen could still interfere in full version (64)
• cm_CopyFileDetailsToClip copied extra #1 character when using custom columns with [=tc.comment] column, and the comment file was Unicode (32/64)
• Allow to view, rename and delete files ending with a dot, e.g. "test.txt .". These names are not allowed in Windows functions, but can still be created on NTFS with \\?\ prefix (32/64)
• Display trailing dot(s) in file list for file names ending with a dot (which isn't allowed in Windows functions , but can still be created on NTFS with \\?\ prefix) (32/64)

Ik gebruik al tijdje de beta's maar bij installatie van deze versie wordt ik gevraagd of ik nieuwe iconen of oude wil voor mijn toolbar. Kennelijk toch nog iets nieuws toegevoegd na alle beta's

ik zit nog altijd op de oude versie te werken... nu TC voor 't eerst ook icoontjes tussen de twee filelists zet hoop ik dat je die ook kan uitzetten want ik gebruik vooral m'n keyboard en amper de muis op de computer.

Het zou m'n hersenpan waarschijnlijk constant negatief prikkelen als ik daar iconen tussen die filelists heb staan die nutteloos zijn en anders o zo handige beeldruimte wegneemt.

Die kun je uitschakelen bij configuratie > opties en dan bij het onderdeel indeling kun je werkbalk 2 (verticaal) uitschakelen.

Waar de meeste software bouwers bèta's alleen maar gebruiken om te testen en foutjes weg te poetsen en release candidates om een iets groter publiek te laten testen of er echt geen fouten meer in zitten, blijft Gishler elke nieuwe release gebruiken om nieuwe features en functies toe te voegen.
Dat hij nu van bèta's naar RC's is overgestapt betekent dat hij verwacht dat er geen fouten meer inzitten die de werking kunnen verstoren en dat hij zich toespitst op slordigheidjes in de vormgeving, dialogen etc. die de werking op zich niet beïnvloeden. Daar kan hij rustig nog een RC of 4 á 5 mee bezig zijn.

Mooie tool. Sommige mensen zweren erbij. Heb hem in het verleden wel eens gebruikt. Ik gebruik echter wel heel veel de Android versie van Total Commander. Zeker met de handige plugins die ervoor beschikbaar zijn en bovendien is de Android versie gratis.

De langverwachte Release Candidate van deze prachtige tool is er eindelijk. Ik vind het elke keer weer bijzonder om te zien dat Ghisler er voor kiest om ook bij een RC nieuwe features toe te voegen in plaats van zich alleen toe te spitsen op het verhelpen van bugs. Aan de ene kant is dit mooi maar aan de andere kant kunnen nieuwe features ook weer bugs bevatten waardoor de release snel opschuift. Ik ben erg benieuwd naar de release van de final versie. Over het algemeen komen er een aantal RC versies vooraf.
