Er is een nieuwe bètarelease van Total Commander versie 9.0 uitgekomen, de zestiende alweer. Dit programma kan als vervanging voor Windows Verkenner worden gebruikt. Doordat het beeld in tweeën is gesplitst, is het eenvoudig om bestanden te kopiëren, maar het programma kan veel meer. Zo zijn er diverse manieren om bestanden aan te passen, zijn een ingebouwde ftp-client en een multirename-tool aanwezig, en is er ondersteuning voor een groot aantal compressieformaten. Verder kan de functionaliteit met plug-ins worden uitgebreid. Het programma is klein en hoeft niet geïnstalleerd te worden om het te kunnen gebruiken, dus het is makkelijk om het overal te gebruiken.
In versie 9 treffen we onder meer een paar cosmetische wijzigingen aan. Zo worden er nu systeemiconen gebruikt in plaats van de interne en is er een nieuwe menubalk tussen de twee bestandsschermen geplaatst. Verder zijn er een groot aantal kleine verbeteringen aangebracht. De changelog voor deze uitgave ziet er als volgt uit:

- Do not use semi-transparent bitmaps with alpha channel on Windows 2000 when resizing, otherwise the icons could get a black background (32/64)
- Use 16-bit colors for icons on Windows 9x/ME/2000, otherwise dimmed icons look ugly, dithered with white instead of dimmed (32/64)
- File list icons could have black background on Windows 2000, need to use old scaling method without alpha blending (32/64)
- Do not open notification about new version while the startup screen or settings dialog are open (32/64)
- Starting TC with locked bitlocker drive on current tab and BitlockerAlwaysDecrypt=1 option could lead to infinite asking for password if user didn't enter it (note that 32-bit works differently, it switches to c:\) (64)
- Vertical button bar: Show icons centered also when button sizeSwitch away from tab with "locked but directory changes allowed", while not in locked root -> tab color was restored to the locked root, but not the tab icon (32/64)
- Switching to server with command line: cd \\servername requiring user name+password would sometimes show the "Reading directory" dialog in front of the login/password dialog (32/64)
- View modes: Right clicking on tab which wasn't active when starting TC sometimes didn't check the current view mode (32/64)
- Sometimes the right file panel couldn't get focused (happens when only the right panel window handle is recreated) (64)
