Synology heeft na twee bètareleases nu de release candidate van versie 6.0 van Disk Station Manager uitgebracht. Synology DSM is de beheersoftware die op diverse nas-producten van het bedrijf draait. De Disk, Cube en Rack Stations bieden meer dan alleen extra opslagruimte. Zo kunnen ook back-ups van alle clients op het netwerk worden gemaakt en kunnen bestanden via http, ftp, bittorrent, usenet en emule worden gedownload, zodat bijvoorbeeld energiegulzige pc's 's nachts uit kunnen, terwijl de download gewoon binnenkomt. Verder kunnen via de ingebouwde iTunes-server audio- en videobestanden over het netwerk worden gestreamd, kan met behulp van php en MySQL een dynamische website worden gehost en kan het apparaat als printserver fungeren.
Om versie 6.0 te kunnen installeren zal minimaal versie 5.2 aanwezig moeten zijn. Verder is het uitsluitend geschikt voor de nas-modellen waarvan het typenummer eindigt op 11 of hoger. Kijk voor de overige voorwaarden en de verschillende downloads op deze pagina. In versie 6.0 treffen we onder meer verbeteringen in Cloud, Note, Photo en Video Station aan, is er een collaboration drive voor spreadsheets en zijn de mogelijkheden om backups te maken en terug te zetten verbeterd. Ook is DSM nu volledig 64bit en zijn er daardoor prestatieverbeteringen waar te nemen. Daarnaast zijn er diverse nieuwe mogelijkheden voor met een krachtige processor uitgeruste modellen, waaronder ondersteuning voor het Btrfs-bestandssysteem, een uitgebreide webmailclient en e-mailserver, een Load Balancer, een Document Viewer en is ook de ondersteuning voor Docker verbeterd.De changelog voor deze release candidate laat verder nog de volgende verbeteringen zien:
Btrfs File SystemService Modularization
- Set usage/user quota for shared folders.
- Enable file compression to increase the flexibility of volume usage.
- Perform defragmentation to increase system performance.
- Data checksum is enabled by default and data scrubbing can be run to verify data integrity.
- When file versioning is enabled in Cloud Station Server, it will not occupy additional storage on Btrfs file system. On other file systems, file versioning will occupy additional space equal to the size of each shared folder.
- Files will be backed up once the backup task is started, even if the files are changed or deleted afterwards.
- Converting existing ext4 file system to Btrfs is not supported. To store files under Btrfs file system you must create a new folder.

64-Bit Architecture
- Some of the DSM built-in features have been modularized into packages to ensure better system maintenance and update flexibility.
- Modularization in DSM 6.0 RC includes Storage Analyzer, Hyper Backup, PHP, Web Station and Text Editor, Log Center (with basic built-in functions in DSM and extensive functions via package download), WebDAV and Snapshot Replication.
High Availability Manager
- DSM 6.0 has been optimized for all models based on Intel 64-bit processors to improve general performance.
- Supports over 4GB memory allocation for one single process to deploy large scale application.
High Availability Manager for RC18015xs+
- When a split-brain error occurs in an HA cluster, you can designate one server as the active server and overwrite the data on the other server. No full data replication is required.
- When a split-brain error occurs, you can view the recent system information, iSCSI Target connection history and file difference in each shared folder.
- Improved cluster upgrade efficiency.
- Improved cluster binding and unbinding efficiency.
- Reduced the occurrence of split-brain errors.
- Supports Docker DSM.

Security
- Backup & Replication features are now available in add-on packages Hyper Backup (backup client) and Hyper Backup Vault (backup server). The existing Backup & Replication task settings will be migrated to the new package automatically upon upgrading to DSM 6.0. Some settings are relocated to Control Panel:

- Shared Folder Sync: Control Panel > Shared Folder Sync

- Supports mounting NFS shared folders on folders on Synology NAS.
- Aviary photo editor is introduced to replace the existing service for a more intuitive interface.
- Multiple files can be downloaded without being compressed into one giant file on Chrome browser (on Windows computers only).
File sharing
- Search in File Station now allows you to match the document content or even the metadata of multimedia files for a more effective search result.
- You can now use Mac Finder to quickly search the content of indexed files within mounted folders on your Synology NAS.

- You can view the throughput, latency, IOPS, IO Size and queue depth of each iSCSI LUN.
Package Center
- You can now view the status of last run tasks to monitor the results.
- Packages are divided into two main categories, Synology and Third-party, for better recognition.

Hij blijft buiten de boot vallen, ook voor BTRFS wat eraan zit te komen.
In dat geval corrigeer ik: Beetje jammer dat BTRFS wel op de DS415+ beschikbaar is, maar niet op de DS415Play welke in principe een kloon is met extra functies erbij.
