7-Zip logo (45 pix) Versie 15.12 Release van 7-Zip is verschenen Dit opensource-archiveringsprogramma kan overweg met een groot aantal compressieformaten, waaronder zip, cab, rar, arj, lzh, chm, gzip, bzip2, z, tar, cpio, rpm, deb en uiteraard het zelfontwikkelde 7z. Verder is de software in staat om iso-bestanden en nsis-installatiepakketten te openen. In versie 15 heeft het programma onder meer een nieuwe installatieprocedure gekregen en kunnen archieven gemaakt met WinRAR 5 nu worden uitgepakt. De changelog voor deze uitgave ziet er als volgt uit:

These alpha versions could not open non-solid 7z archive, if
some files were skipped during creation of that archive.
That problem is also related to 7z archives created in solid mode,
if each solid block contains no more than one file.
Note: 7-Zip skips files that were open for writing by another
application and shows warning in that case.
- New localization: Aragonese.

Na 5 jaar een stabiele update vond ik wel een vermelding waard van een groter changelog.

Wel bijzonder trouwens dat je met deze nieuwe versie een andere installatie methode hebt waardoor ik blijkbaar mijn Windows 10 systeem moest herstartern.

Ook is de installatie van 64-bit niet meer .msi maar gewoon .exe.

Er is de keuze voor een .exe of een .msi voor beide x86 en x64. De keuze van een .exe voor 64-bit x64 is bijgekomen, die was voorheen enkel voor 32-bit x86 beschikbaar.
Wel bijzonder trouwens dat je met deze nieuwe versie een andere installatie methode hebt waardoor ik blijkbaar mijn Windows 10 systeem moest herstartern.
Bij de upgrade van 15.10 Beta naar 15.12 heb ik mijn windows 10-installatie niet moeten herstarten. Misschien kwam jij van een te oude versie van 7-zip?

Waarom springen ze van v9 naar v15?
Het grote versienummer is gebaseerd op het jaartal waarvoor de stable release beoogd is. De vorige stabiele versie kwam uit 2009 (dus 9.xx). De stabiele versie daarvoor kwam uit in 2004 (dus 4.xx).

Na jaren weer eens een niet alpha/ beta release....

Release log is daarintegen wel wat bijzonder 'The BUG fixed' ...
Dat komt omdat Tweakers het fout heeft gekopieerd:

De reden voor mij om over te stappen van WinRar naar 7-Zip was een stom dingetje dat WinRar niet goed kon: omgaan met "te lange pad+bestandnamen". Langer dan 256 tekens samen dus.
Omdat ik dit eerder nergens zag staan, denk ik: ik plaats het even erbij.
En ik vertrouw de encryptymethode beter, maar dat kan ik nu even niet onderbouwen, op de vele Rar-pasword-crackers die je overal kan vinden dan na.
