Terwijl de ontwikkeling van versie 4.1 van LibreOffice al in volle gang is, heeft de Document Foundation ook nog een release candidate van de vierde update voor versie 4.0 uitgebracht. Dit opensource-officepakket is ontstaan als een afsplitsing van OpenOffice en wordt geleverd met tekstverwerker Writer, spreadsheetprogramma Calc, presentatieprogramma Impress, tekenprogramma Draw, databaseprogramma Base en Formula, een applicatie om wetenschappelijke notaties mee te maken. Hoewel dit de vierde stabiele uitgave uit de 4.0-tak is, wordt het nog steeds alleen voor thuisgebruik en 'early corporate adaptors' aangeraden. In productieomgevingen wordt aangeraden om nog even bij versie 3.6.6 te blijven. Een uitgebreid overzicht van de veranderingen in versie 4.0 kan op deze pagina worden gevonden. In deze eerste release candidate treffen we geen nieuwe mogelijkheden aan, maar zijn een kleine honderd problemen verholpen.
