Software-update: Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.9

Microsoft heeft een nieuwe update klaarstaan voor zijn Office 2008-pakket voor het Mac OS X-platform. Het kantoorpakket bevat Word, Excel, Powerpoint en Entourage, evenals een groot aantal wizards en tools om het verwerken van teksten, afbeeldingen en geluiden gemakkelijker te maken. De versieteller staat inmiddels op 12.1.9 en is voorzien van de volgende aankondiging:

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.9 Update

This update improves security. It includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code. In addition, this update readies Office 2008 for Mac for the installation of Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac, Web Services Edition, and must be installed before Entourage 2008, Web Services Edition is installed.

Microsoft has released security bulletin MS09-027. This security bulletin contains all the relevant information about the security updates for Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.

Improvements for all Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac applications:

• Security is improved.
  This update fixes vulnerabilities in Office 2008 that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code. For more information, see the security bulletin listed earlier in this document.

Improvements for Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac

• Prerequisite for the installation of Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac Web Services Edition
  This update prepares Office 2008 for Mac for the installation of Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac Web Services Edition. It must be installed before Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition is installed. After you install this update, each identity that you use will generate a text file. Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition will use this text file to evaluate whether the system meets the installation requirements during setup.

Nee, Microsoft heeft zijn eigen AutoUpdate programma voor Office. Deze staat los van de updates van Apple.

Ik had hem zelf op Manual gezet, dus ik wist ook niet dat deze update uit was. Altijd handig dat tweakers.net....

Toch blijf ik het bizar vinden dat Microsoft zijn Office pakket blijft maken voor de Macintosh en niet voor bijv. Linux. Is dat omdat Mac meer marktaandeel heeft op de desktop? Ik denk het niet want als Linux op de desktop groeit gaan ze dat vast ook niet doen.

Misschien omdat er bizar wijnig noodzaak is voor Linux-Office? De meeste Linux systemen zijn servers, thin-clients, telefoons, routers, etc, geen systemen bedoeld om Office op te draaien. En daarnaast is een flink deel van de Linux-gebruikers ook een Microsoft-antifanboy, hoewel dat vooral voor thuis-desktops geldt. En tenslotte zijn er goede alternatien voor Office zoals Open Office Org, dus is de noodzaak voor mijn gevoel lager dan op OSX.

OpenOffice is er ook in een native OS X versie.

Apple is echt actief op zoek naar contact met deze mensen en weet dat mensen dit nodig hebben. Daarom is er een afspraak gemaakt met Apple en is er bij MS ook een Apple team.
Ik denk dat dat de grootste reden is.

Alhoewel die overeenkomst inmiddels afgelopen is, neem ik aan dat de MAC-divisie van MS inmiddels wel goed lopend is.
