Met FreeNAS kan een computer aangesloten op het aanwezige netwerk gebruikt worden puur en alleen voor dataopslag, in goed Engels Network Attached Storage geheten. Het geheel is gebaseerd op een uitgeklede FreeBSD installatie en voorzien van een overzichtelijke webinterface. Het heeft ondersteuning aan boord voor CIFS (Samba), FTP, NFS, RSYNC, SSH, local user authentication en Software RAID 0, 1 en 5. De ontwikkelaars hebben onlangs een nieuwe bètaversie op de wereld gezet met 0.683 als het versienummer. De lijst met veranderingen sinds de vorige vermelding in de meuktracker ziet er als volgt uit:
