Anand is een paar dagen ziek geweest waardoor z'n review van de Promise Fasttrack wat gedelayed is, maar nu is-tie terug en wel met een super dikke review van 12 pagina's! Hier wat basic info over RAID en wat de Fasttrak doet:

The same principle, as you may or may not already know, has also been applied to hard disk drives through the use of a system known as the Redundant Array of Independent Disks, or RAID. As the name usually implies, RAID allows for two or more hard disks to be connected in a manner that allows one of two basic options, striping, and/or mirroring. While the specifics of the many functions of RAID will be diagramed and explained later, generally speaking, RAID has always been reserved for servers or extremely high-end workstations due to the extreme costs associated with RAID based disk subsystems. Until recently, RAID has been reserved for SCSI disk drives only, since the thought of having a low cost IDE based RAID system never really caught on. There is a great deal of confusion in the market over the actual benefits and functionality of RAID, and it is that confusion and set of common misconceptions that has led to the virtual absence of IDE RAID devices. This is simply because of the fact that the common user probably hasn't been exposed to the benefits of RAID and therefore has no desire to spend extra money on a seemingly "useless" technology. Promise Technology, Inc., has always been a supporter of higher performing IDE devices, and the company has definitely come a long way in recent times to become a prominent name in the hard disk controller industry. Hoping to push the IDE RAID technology into the hands of high-end consumers on a budget, Promise created two products based on their own IDE RAID technology, the FastTrack and the FastSwap Pro. Will Promise's attempt to integrate an IDE RAID solution actually succeed? There are a number of factors that one must consider before providing a thorough answer to that question, and at the top of the list?

Windows99 coming up!

Het was al eerder een gerucht, maar nu is het zeker: er komt NOG een Windows 9x: Windows98 SE, Second Edition. Dit waarschijnlijk omdat de integratie van Win2000 als gaming platform toch nog niet helemaal super is... Zucht!

Microsoft has tacitly confirmed that a consumer operating system based on the NT kernel is off the agenda for the foreseeable future. Last week's leaks of the company reorganisation plans had Jim Allchin running development of a new version of Windows 9x , meaning that 98 was by no means the last of the line, and now it seems that the latest build of the Windows 98 service pack has sprouted a name, and started to turn into a full-blown product.

jaja... wij mogen dus weer vrolijk gaan doken...

Win98SE, een patch voor de patch van Win95. maar natuurlijk wel weer al volledige release.

Maar gezien de beta's is het wel weer een verbetering. Booten en afsluiten gaan razend snel (vergeleken bij 98) en ook het browsen over de HD gaat stukken sneller dan met de 1e 98.

Xitel, een australisch bedrijfje gaat diamond achterna. Zij die dolgraag een Vortex2 hebben willen, maar door de naam Diamond afgeschrikt worden kunnen nu er dan toch eentje kopen.

Rambus, wie heeft er nog niet van gehoord. Ook hebben we al meer malen van grote vertragingen bericht gegeven.

NEC today announced the addition of a 128Mb (megabits) Direct Rambus(TM) dynamic random access memory (DRAM) to its portfolio of advanced memory devices. The 800MHz 128Mb RDRAMr (æPD488448FB) will also be offered in a 184-pin Rambus inline memory module (RIMM(TM)) MC-4R128CKE6, and both are expected to begin sampling in April 1999. Demands on systems have continued to increase with the expansion of the Internet, increasing use of high-speed 3D graphics processing and ever more sophisticated features in application software and operating systems. As a result, the large amounts of data to be processed require not only higher performance microprocessors but also faster data transfer speeds and larger capacity memory devices. The 800MHz Rambus technology announced today meets these needs by offering 1.6 gigabytes (GB) per second of peak bandwidth and 128 megabits density from a single device. The æPD488448FB is expected to ship in volume from July 1999 reaching a rate of 3 million units per month by the end of 1999. The 128Mb Direct RDRAM device is the first NEC DRAM to incorporate NEC's proprietary packaging technology, a center bonded die dimension ball grid array (D2BGA) package.

Ken je AoE nog? van Microsoft?
nouja, het was opzich een aardig spel. Versie 2 is al enige tijd in de maak, en hier is een leuke preview er over te lezen.

Age II spans a thousand years, from the fall of Rome on through the Middle Ages. It will have 13 civilisations (including the Franks, Japanese, Byzantines, Vikings, Mongols and Celts), each with different attributes, buildings and technologies as well as a unique combat unit (such as Samurai). There will be three different ways in which to achieve victory: military conquest, economic victory, and building and defending Wonders.

One of the most used words when describing a 3D Accelerator is the word Fillrate. Even more right now there seems to be a battle... the battle for the highest fillrate. But is everybody in this battle using the same definition of fillrate, and why do some companies use Mtexels and others Mpixels to define their FillRate ? Even more : does this "Fillrate"-number have a real meaning ?

Tribes Review

een volledig internet game dreigt het te worden. een ding hebben ze wel geleerd: Unreal had het door het niet werken op een TNT zwaar te voorduren, dit spel kwam oorspronkelijkt uit met alleen 3dfx support, maar er is inmiddels een patch.

Taking place in the Starsiege universe, Tribes brings with it a rich story and background that is fully discussed within the manual and will most likely be expanded on with the upcoming release of Starsiege. The first and most obvious statement I can make about Tribes is that it was designed from the ground up specifically for playing online. Don't even think about launching it without a decent connection to the Internet as you're wasting your time. As far as I can tell, you can't even set your options without a fully established an Internet connection. Fortunately, after doing so, you're given the ability to set your configuration and get things set just the way you want them with a simple, user-friendly interface. Connecting to a game is incredibly simple in Tribes with a simple interface that looks very similar to Gamespy. Here you find what server you want to join, make a couple of clicks, and you're off. Being able to find servers from within the game makes it easy to switch and convenient, since you don't have to download a separate utility. Despite this easy-to-use built-in interface, a patch will be released shortly to add Gamespy support

Wheel of Time preview

PowerVR heeft een preview geklust van WoT. Nee, niet World of Tweaking, maar Wheel of Time. Nou MOOI niet dat ze de rechten op onze afkorting kunnen krijgen hoor!!! ;-)

The game is being built using an enhanced version of the Unreal engine. These enhancements include a particle system for creating fantastic explosions, smoke trails, and weather effects such as snow, rain and wind. Add this to the best looking 3D engine on the market, which includes 24 bit color (MMX), multiple dynamic and colored lighting sources and a powerful scripting language and the world envisioned by Robert Jordan is sure to blossom on the PC screen. Legend will also incorporate many of the engine features developed by Epic for Unreal Tournament into WoT making for a seamless multiplayer experience. Just take a look at the screenshots and you can see why this game may redefine the look of 3D action games. Of course the game will have native support for PowerSGL (PowerVR PCX2 and PowerVR 250), Glide and will also have support for Direct 3D and OpenGL.

force feedback mouse?

hou maar op... als je net dekt het allemaal wel gezien te hebben....

The vast majority of PC games sold today are designed for control by a mouse, or mouse-plus-keyboard combination. Despite the rapidly growing popularity of force feedback for joystick and racing games -- and the greater creative opportunities it offers game developers -- producers of most games have not been able to take advantage of this technology because there are no suitable controllers. With the introduction of the force-feedback mouse, developers will now be able to provide feel sensations in all kinds of games, including first-person, real-time strategy, role-playing, adventure, sports, simulation, strategy, war, hunting, classics, puzzles and edutainment titles.

3Dfx verandert haar image

Voodoo Extreme heeft een best wel grappig nieuwtje over 3Dfx... eh, oeps... tis ff wennen 3dfx. Jawel, urlwww.3dfx.com target=new>3dfx heeft een nieuwe uitstraling en een nieuw logo. Je gaat je bijna afvragen: zouden ze de bui al zien hangen daar ofzo dat ze hun grootse en stoere uiterlijk nu zo klein en verborgen maken?

First, 3Dfx is getting a new logo! The company is NOW "3dfx" (small "d"). If you haven't seen it yet, the good ol' powershield is being replaced by a clean and nice looking image (http://www.3dfx.com). The only thing that stands out on the new lettering is part of the "x" in 3dfx now has an orange "Nike-ish" swish across the top, resembling the top part of a disk at an angle. You should be seeing the new logo all over the place very soon. Of course gaming magazines like PC Accelerator and Voodoo Magazine will feature striking new print ads, but the marketing wizards are also introducing TV ads! These ads are a part of a $20 million dollar marketing campaign and will be seen on all sorts of cable and broadcast stations, including MTV, ESPN and CBS during the "March Madness" games (foreign readers... this is the college basketball championship which gets a LOT of viewers). What this new marketing means is that while 3dfx is still dedicated to us gamers (we built them up to where they are today), they are expanding their reach to include an OEM and business image too. They are firmly entrenched in the "gamer and developer army" and won't leave us alone on the battlefield... they are just calling in new troops to back us up! en natuurlijk ook nog kort wat nieuws over de Voodoo 3

Mr. Howse also showed the packaging for Voodoo3. Since I was on the phone listening in I didn't get to see any of the packaging or TV ads, but Chris said they looked very cool. CK says the box is very clean, not the usual loads of bullet points of various features of the card. The photographs on the box are taken by the guy who has done photography Marilyn Manson and Trent Reznor if that gives any indication to the style. 3dfx is trying to make the experience less-techy and more like buying a game console or a music CD. Speaking of Voodoo3, when it launches in a few weeks it will be available in over 5000 retail stores in the US and very soon after that around 5000 additional retail stores worldwide (Europe, Asia, etc.). CompUSA (the largest hardware distributor) said that the Voodoo3 presale has been their largest presale of hardware ever. Interestingly, the hugely popular Voodoo2 is not out of the picture yet. STB will be manufacturing a model called the "V2 1000 PCI". A price hasn't been set yet on this 12meg 3d-only card for $129. There's no new features, it's the same reference card that has been available since last summer in a cool new box and at a great price.

tsja, was eigenlijk allang bekent, maar als je 3dfx hebben wil zit je dus echt aan SBT vast.

TA: Kingdoms preview

Was Total Annihilation een goed verkopens spel (en wees eerlijk , die multiplayer beets the shit out of everything), Cavedog blijft na deze hit natuurlijk niet stil zitten. TA: Kingdoms zou best wel eens extreem gaaf kunnen gaan worden.

There was, however, one area in which Total Annihilation was lacking: the story. And while the skirmish mode was great and the multiplayer game was unbeatable, the single-player campaign suffered due to the lack of any motivating plot. Many would argue that story is a secondary element in a strategy game. But as Starcraft proved, a good story can turn a straightforward strategy game into an incredible experience. Perhaps, then, it's no surprise that Cavedog is putting a great deal of emphasis on the story behind its upcoming follow-up, Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. Using the mechanics of the futuristic Total Annihilation as its basis, Kingdoms tells of four factions at war in a medieval fantasy realm. And while Kingdoms will certainly add some gameplay features of its own and continue the strong multiplayer support of its predecessor, the goal in Kingdoms is to use Total Annihilation's excellent system to create a rich universe and a compelling single-player experience. Kingdoms lead designer Clayton Kauzlaric has no qualms about admitting that not much work was put into Total Annihilation's story. When asked about its somewhat frail premise, he laughs, "I remember the afternoon when we thought it up. It was like, 'OK, they're robots. They're fighting. The end.' It was barely an excuse for a war, really."

Ik moet zeggen dat ik het best wel eens ben met hun beoordeling van TA. het verhaal er achter was nog te droog om er beschuit van te bakken...
