One thing seems to be certain - both processors and memories are destined to become throwaway commodities with relatively short life spans. Eventually we will very likely see not only the L2 cache embedded in the chip, but the entire system RAM. This will allow SRAM cache to be eliminated, since the DRAM will be running at, or close to, processor speeds. Memory upgrades will then be a processor upgrade as well, but the overall price will still be relatively small.
