TEMPE, Ariz., June 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Three-Five Systems, Inc. (NYSE: TFS) today announced that it has begun sampling its newly developed "paperwhite" liquid crystal displays. The enhanced passive matrix LCDs, developed at Three-Five's Tempe, Arizona design engineering center, offer original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) a high-contrast LCD display with an appearance that, unlike traditional LCDs, more closely approximates the black and white look of ink on paper.
The paperwhite display design will complement Three-Five's existing portfolio of direct view LCDs, CSTN transflective/reflective color LCDs, and revolutionary Brillian(TM) LCoS microdisplays. Three-Five will use the paperwhite display to target manufacturers of personal digital assistants (PDAs), data collection devices, and handheld terminals such as e-books.
"Through improved fluid technology and cell construction, we have designed a display with a high degree of contrast and a black and white look that enhances users' viewability," stated Rob Harrison, Three-Five's Vice President of Direct View Displays. "Paperwhite will allow developers of PDAs and other handheld terminals to achieve the look of a printed page in either a transflective or a reflective display." The company indicated that sample volumes of the displays have already commenced to customers in these markets and volume production is expected to begin later this year.
