GoPro voegt onbeperkte opslagruimte voor video's toe aan Plus-abonnement

Actiecameramaker GoPro heeft onbeperkte opslagruimte voor video's toegevoegd aan zijn abonnementsdienst Plus. Daarmee wil het bedrijf meer klanten trekken voor GoPro Plus, dat momenteel rond 185.000 gebruikers heeft.

GoPro Plus had al onbeperkte opslag voor foto's, maar video's opslaan is tot nu toe beperkt op 35GB. Vanaf eind januari geldt die beperking niet meer, meldt GoPro. De actiecameramaker wil daarmee meer klanten trekken voor zijn Plus-dienst. Video's worden zonder beperkingen in resolutie of framerate opgeslagen op de servers van de fabrikant.

De onbeperkte opslag komt ook beschikbaar voor huidige klanten. Dat gebeurt eerst in de Verenigde Staten en op een later moment ook in de Benelux. Wanneer dat zal gebeuren, is niet bekend. In het Plus-abonnement zit verder een dienst om een vervangende camera te krijgen als de huidige stuk gaat, maar die is vooralsnog beperkt tot de Verenigde Staten. Die dienst komt later dit jaar in meer landen beschikbaar, maar of dat ook in de Benelux het geval zal zijn, is onbekend. GoPro Plus kost 5 dollar per maand.

Ben erg benieuwd naar de FUP. Iemand die dag in dag uit 4K aan het filmen is en duizenden uren aan 4K materiaal wilt opslaan.... dat gaat Go Pro veel meer kosten dan wat die 5 dollar per maand oplevert.

Wellicht, maar realistisch gezien hoeveel mensen zullen dit echt gaan doen? Ik verwacht een zeer klein percentage. Dan worden die kosten ruimschoots gedekt door de massa (aan gebruikers).

Microsoft had ooit onbeperkte FUP opslag op (toen nog) Skydrive.

Daar hielden ze snel mee op toen 1 of andere gek het halve internet begon te uploaden. En voor MS kost die opslag in verhouding tot GoPro pinda's.

Dat is waar. Amazon heeft hetzelfde gedaan toen ze erachter kwamen dat iemand eindeloos webcam streams aan het opnemen en uploaden was.

Het zal er wellicht aan liggen om wat voor materiaal het gaat. Als iemand een goede reden heeft oim 24/7 4k content te genereren, dan zullen ze het wellicht toestaan. Maar als het echt doelloos is, dan zal dat anders zijn.

Daar tegenover staat dat het echt wel een hoop data is die continu gegenereerd word. Waar ligt de grens?

Ook mijn eerste gedachte; je hoeft maar 1 gek te hebben die een Go Pro op zijn schouder monteert of in zijn auto en 24/7 laat draaien. Al was het maar om te kijken of het kán.

Maar onbeperkt en zonder compressie, zijn ze dan ook op dezelfde kwaliteit terug te kijken via Quik?

Voor 5 euro onbeperkt video/camera opslag met share-link, zullen ze dan ook controleren of die data echt van een gopro afkomt? Anders wel leuke plek voor mijn generic camera opnames (gaan nu naar OneDrive, maar afspelen is regelmatig flink wat bufferen).

En daar gaan we meer ‘onbeperkt’. Kijkend naar Amazon met haar ‘onbeperkte’ Cloud Drive zal GoPro snel terugkrabbelen. Ik zal /r/datahoarder in de gaten houden om te kijken hoe men deze dienst eens even vol gaat pompen met films en porno.

Daarnaast had ik de laatste tijd begrepen dat GoPro niet een heel sterk bedrijf is. Anders dan Amazon welke een onbeperkte dienst nog wel omhoog zou kunnen houden zonder er al te veel van te merken.

Niet eens, gewoon door middel van het aanpassen van EXIF-gegevens (weet niet hoe de controle precies gedaan wordt door GoPro) faken dat de content afkomstig is van een GoPro. Ik gok dat je dan van alles zou kunnen uploaden naar de cloud service.
