ROUND ROCK, Texas - Oct. 13, 2000 - Dell is voluntarily recalling about 27,000 batteries supplied to Dell for use in some notebook-style personal computers. These batteries can short circuit, even when the battery is not in use, potentially causing them to become very hot, release smoke and possibly catch fire.
Dell has received one report of a battery in a Dell computer short-circuiting and catching fire. The incident resulted in minor property damage. No injuries were reported. This recall involves the specified batteries only, not the computers themselves.
The batteries were sold primarily with Dell notebook computers shipped directly to customers from June 22 through Sept. 15, 2000, into North, Central and South America, and from June 22 through October 4, 2000, into Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Dell and its authorized service providers also sold the batteries separately during the same period.
The recalled batteries were sold primarily with Dell computers, specifically the following models: Latitude CPiA, CPiR, CPtC, CPtS, CPtV, CPxH and CPxJ, and Inspiron 3700 and 3800 (as described on labels on the underside of the computer). The batteries insert into the front-left and/or front-right of the computer. "DELLTM" and "MADE IN JAPAN" are shown on the batteries. For recalled batteries, the battery identification numbers, displayed in a two-line series of characters on a white label on the battery, include:
Consumers whose batteries include the identification codes described above should call Dell for battery-discharge information, and to arrange to safely return the recalled battery and be eligible to receive two replacement batteries for each recalled battery.
