Russian supercomputer engineers have developed a microprocessor that -- on paper -- is up to five times faster than Intel's Merced chip, due next year.The chip, called E2k, was designed by Elbrus International, which has spent the last 40 years doing mostly development for the Russian military establishment.
The CPU design achieves 135 SPECint95 and 350 SPECfp95 benchmarks, well beyond the 45 SPECint95 and 70 SPECfp95 benchmarks for Merced. It runs in a 0.18 micron die at 1.2 GHz with 256K of on-chip L2 cache. It consumes only 35 watts while Merced consumes 60. Through emulation and compiler technology, it's both x86 and IA-64 compatible.
