CBS MarketWatch meldt dat HotRail stopt met de produktie van core logic chipsets. HotRail had een 8-way Athlon multiprocessing chipset op de planning, maar gaat zich nu toeleggen op de ontwikkeling van netwerk en communicatie chips. Voor AMD heeft dit besluit waarschijnlijk weinig gevolgen. AMD heeft geen marktaandeel in de high-end server markt en heeft bovendien een eigen SMP chipset in ontwikkeling:
HotRail will develop transceivers and switch-fabric ICs for high-speed networking applications, according to Rick Shriner, president and chief executive of the San Jose company."We're no longer in the core-logic business," Shriner said. "That market's no longer interesting to us."
HotRail was originally developing a chipset for high-end, eight-way server applications. The main customer for the chipset was Advanced Micro Devices Inc., which later this year was supposed to use the product with its high-end K7 Athlon microprocessors.
[...] "I really doubt that this will affect AMD," said Hal Feeney, an analyst at Pathfinder Research Inc., San Jose. "The high-end server market is far out of the mainstream at AMD right now. I think AMD's priority is to build and ship as many [consumer-oriented] processors as they can."
