Software-update: Netscape 8.0

Netscape is één van de oude bekenden in browserland. De ontwikkeling heeft lange tijd stil gestaan, maar sinds het begin van dit jaar heeft men de bal weer opgepakt. Na de publieke bèta van versie 8 heeft men dan nu, zoals op de frontpage te lezen is, versie 8.0 de deur uitgedaan. Netscape 8.0 heeft technologie aan boord tegen phishing door gebruik te maken van een blacklist die drie maal per dag vernieuwd wordt, ondersteuning voor tabbed browsing en een RSS-feed die het laatste nieuws laat zien. De browser is gebaseerd op Firefox 1.0.3 en maakt standaard gebruik van de Gecko-engine. Daarnaast wordt ook de Internet Explorer-engine ondersteund. De release notes zien er als volgt uit:

Dual Rendering Engine:
For several years now, many web surfers have had to struggle with the issue of which web browser to use. Netscape 8 Browser neatly solves this problem by including both display engines. You can set Netscape Browser as your default display engine, and then switch to Internet Explorer's display engine for sites that require it. In addition rather than having to repeatedly change the display engine for an individual site each time you visit it, you can tell Netscape Browser to always remember the setting for that site, and to automatically use your preferred display engine whenever you visit it.

Tabbed Browsing:
Tabbed browsing lets you have multiple web pages open in one window conserving system resources. This feature organizes and frees up desktop space by opening multiple websites in a series of tabs that you can easily switch back and forth between.

Site Controls For Secure Browsing:
With more security options than any other browser, Netscape's Site Controls allow the user to choose how much they trust a site. Just indicate how much you trust a web page, and Netscape Browser 8 will automatically set your security settings, and then remember those settings the next time your visit that site. Netscape Browser 8 offers the best of both worlds by combining the intuition of Firefox with the user-friendly capabilities of Internet Explorer.

Multibar:
The MultiBar condenses toolbars into single customizable buttons, creating a more spacious, media-rich browser while reducing page clutter. Add up to ten different toolbars on your browser without out stacking them on top of each other.

Form Fill/Passcard:
Form Fill can store the standard information requested by so many sites-but only with user permission -- and then automatically fill out the forms. Clicking "Fill & Submit" instantly enters and submits saved login information and takes the user directly to a desired page.

The NEW Netscape.com is loaded with never before seen features and enhancements.

• A drop-down toolbox lets you use only what you want.
• A preview window lets you sneak a peek at content before you click it
• Expandable content blocks let you customize your weather and more.
• See how many new emails you have with a quick glance at your toolbar.
• Our new Toolbox is so portable and convenient we should call it the Tool Belt. It actually goes with you everywhere you go without going back to the previous page.
• Content blocks allow you to see expanded content just by clicking on the header.

Best of all:
You never again have to leave your Netscape homepage. As in no more annoying clicking around, you can hover your mouse over a host of headlines to get a sneak peek at a variety of articles without having to leave the homepage. If you see something you like and want to read the full article, just click the headline in the content reader and it will be displayed in the expanded view (a window pane that slide out to the right containing more information). When you're done reading the article, click the close button in the expanded View and the Netscape Homepage will be revealed.[break]De aangeboden download is een installer van slechts 297KB die de verschillende benodigde onderdelen zelf op zal halen om ze daarna te installeren.
