Linux Kernel 7.3 Officially Released, This Is What’s NewLinux kernel 7.3 is now available for download, as announced today by Linus Torvalds himself, featuring enhanced hardware support, filesystem and networking improvements, security enhancements, new drivers, and many other changes.
Highlights of Linux 7.3 include a new sandboxing mechanism based on a pseudo-file system, Rust support for PowerPC systems, userfaultfd support for tracking the working set of virtual machine guest memory, SMB server support for Apple Time Machine, and full support for cgroup sub-schedulers.
Linux kernel 7.3 also adds a new cpuidle subsystem for s390 (IBM System z) architectures, support for data-attributes-only monitoring to the DAMON subsystem, support for alternative data streams to the NTFS3 file system, support for id-mapped mounts to the OverlayFS file system, and support for directory delegations to the NFS server.
On top of that, Linux 7.3 introduces per-share SMB3 encryption support, a new rv wakeup monitor, SMB Direct RDMA encryption support, support for the F2FS file system to dynamically remove partitions from a filesystem’s pool, support for using big TCP packets in UDP tunnels, as well as a new
ioctl()command for the memory-allocation profiling feature.Of course, there are numerous improvements too, for things like cgroup scheduling, VRAM management for low-end GPUs, Btrfs and EXT4 performance, FUSE io_uring performance, mounting of multiple filesystems from a single block device, allocation of CPU time when using group scheduling, and the swap subsystem.
Security-wise, Linux kernel 7.3 introduces a new sysctl knob for regulating access to the
AF_ALGcryptographic API from user space, support for compressed policies in the AppArmor security module, tighter verification of signed BPF programs, and support for setting the “no new privileges” flag for the calling process in the Landlock security module.Linux 7.3 also introduces the usual hardware support expansion through new and updated drivers, supporting things like Adreno A704 GPUs, AMD-based Barco graphics adapters, Intel UFS 4.0 HS-Gear5, Pioneer DJ DJM-S11, Zenbook A16 keyboard, Nuvoton MA35D1 microprocessor, Intel Starfire SoCs, and the new Steam Controller.
Many laptops received improvements for audio, networking, etc., including Acer Aspire A515-57, ASUS VivoBook M515DA/X515DAP, Huawei Matebook, Minisforum AI X1 Pro, Lenovo Legion Pro, Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14ASP10, HP OmniBook X Flip 14, HP Pavilion 15-eh2xxx, HP Spectre x360 16-aa0xxx, HP EliteBook 6 G1a, HP ProBook 440 G5, and ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen.
