Software-update: MKVToolNix 29.0.0

Moritz Bunkus heeft versie 29 van MKVToolNix uitgebracht. Met dit opensourceprogramma kunnen matroska-bestanden bekeken, bewerkt en worden geconverteerd. Zo kunnen geluidssporen en ondertiteling worden toegevoegd, verwijderd of juist als standaard worden ingesteld. MKVToolNix is een verzameling afzonderlijke commandline-tools, maar er wordt ook een grafische gebruikersinterface meegeleverd. Downloads zijn beschikbaar voor Windows, diverse Linux-distributies en macOS. De changelog voor deze uitgave ziet er als volgt uit:

Important notes

• The string formatting library used was switched from boost::format to fmt. See the section "Build system changes" for details.

New features and enhancements

• MKVToolNix GUI: added an option in the preferences for disabling automatic scaling for high DPI displays. Implements #2415.
• MKVToolNix GUI: the GUI will now prevent the system from going to sleep while the job queue is running. This feature is implemented for macOS, Windows and Linux/Unix systems where the org.freedesktop.login1.Manager D-Bus interface is available. Implements #2411.

Bug fixes

• mkvmerge: chapter generation: the start timestamps of chapters generated in intervals was wrong for files whose smallest video timestamp was bigger than 0. Fixes #2432.
• mkvmerge: MP4 reader: fixed handling of atoms whose size exceeds the parent atom’s size. Fixes #2431.
• mkvmerge, MKVToolNix GUI’s chapter editor: the chapter name template will now also be used when reading Ogg-style chapter files with empty chapter names. Fixes #2441.
• mkvextract: AAC: mkvextract will now write the program config element (PCE) before the first AAC raw data packet if the PCE is present in the AudioSpecificConfig structure in the Codec Private Matroska element. The PCE carries vital information about the number of channels and is required in certain cases. Fixes #2205 and #2433.
• mkvpropedit, MKVToolNix GUI’s header editor: in situations when a one-byte space must be covered by a new EBML void element the following element must be moved up instead. If that moved element is a cluster, the corresponding cue entries will now be updated to reflect the cluster’s new position. Fixes #2408.
• MKVToolNix GUI: Windows: the application manifest is now included properly so that Windows actually recognizes it. See #2415.

Build system changes

• Qt’s D-Bus implementation is now required for building on systems other than macOS and Windows,
• The boost::format library is not used anymore.
• The fmt library is now required. Versions 3 and newer are supported. As not all Linux distributions include packages for the library, its release 5.2.1 comes bundled with MKVToolNix. The configure script will check for a system version of the library and use it if present and recent enough. Otherwise it will fall back to the bundled version and link that statically.

Al mijn Blu-Rays rip ik naar een mkv met verschillende sporen om ze te kunnen bekijken via Kodi en tevens als backup (al is het lossy met x264). Deze tool is daarbij onmisbaar.

Deze tool kan alleen overweg met DRM-loze audio/videostreams.

Dat klopt.
Daarom zet ik de audio ook altijd om in mijn MKV's.
Meestal kies ik voor OGG stereo (q6). Ik heb geen thuisbioscoop, dus 5.1 heb ik niet nodig.

Maar dat kan nog komen... en dan zit je vast met enkel stereo.
Ik ripte ook alles met 5.1 DTS just in case, en exact.. opeens een leuke set en dan wel fijn surround. Zo veel kost het niet aan bitjes.

In principe heb je in jouw situatie toch ook genoeg aan Handbrake (of een afgeleide zoals VidCoder)? Die geven ook de mogelijkheid om direct sporen te (de)selecteren en het eindproduct als mkv op te slaan.

Al zou het kunnen dat MKVtoolnix handiger is om eigen labels aan bijvoorbeeld ondertitelsporen toe te voegen.

Zijn de updates zo groot dat er steeds een hoofdnummer verschil moet zijn in het versienummer? de 0.0 in 29.0.0 hebben toch ook een betekenis?

Mits semver gevolgd wordt, lijkt het erop dat die zaken in "Build system changes" een major version bump hebben veroorzaakt.

Heb laatst wat aan ontwikkelaar Moritz Bunkus gedoneerd, want als er één programma is dat ik door de jaren heen consequent gebruik, is het dit wel. Ik kreeg een bedankje terug, met daarin de eerlijke mededeling dat hij het geld eigenlijk niet nodig heeft, maar de blijk van waardering wel erg waardeert

Omdat ik niet kan wennen aan deze interface gebruikte ik tot kort nog steeds versie 8.3 (die hier nog te downloaden is) . tot ik vorige maand een videobestand had gemuxt die onder potplayer een DLL error gaf. andere filmpjes spelen goed af en het betreffende bestand liet zich goed onder VLC afspelen. Toch het betreffende bestand met een nieuwere versie van MKVtoolmix gemuxt en die gaf geen dll fout. Het was wel even zoeken in de nieuwe interface maar is gelukt. Ik zal nu wel over moeten naar de nieuwe interface die ik nog steeds minder intuïtief vind en minder handig werkt dan de oude interface.
