Software-update: PerfectDisk 12.5 build 308

Raxco Software heeft versie 12.5 van zijn defragmenteerprogramma PerfectDisk uitgebracht, een gratis update voor iedereen die een licentie voor versie 12 heeft.. Dit programma reorganiseert de locatie en volgorde van de bestanden op de harde schijf, zodat deze sneller te benaderen zijn. Dit resulteert in het sneller starten van programma's en het sneller booten van de pc. PerfectDisk is geschikt voor Windows XP en hoger, voor zowel de 32bit- als de 64bit-varianten. Een evaluatieversie kan op deze pagina worden gedownload. Prijzen beginnen bij dertig dollar voor een enkele thuislicentie. De verbeteringen die met deze release worden doorgevoerd kunnen hieronder worden gevonden:

PerfectDisk 12.5 Released

PerfectDisk 12.5 is now available. This new release is free to all PerfectDisk 12 users. PerfectDisk 12.5 is free to all licensed PerfectDisk 12 users – even if you are not on Support & Upgrade Protection. If you are a licensed PerfectDisk 12 user, you are entitled to PerfectDisk 12.5 at no charge.

For all PerfectDisk 12.5 components, there are enhancements to OptiWrite that provide up to a 20% improvement in OptiWrite performance, as well as bug fixes.

PerfectDisk 12.5 Professional for home consumers includes the Space Management features described below.

All other versions include both Space Management and Peer-to-Peer Remote Capability described below.

Space Management

• Duplicate File Finder: recovers disk space by detecting and removing duplicate files such as text documents, pictures, music, and videos.
• Recycler: purges the Recycle bin and removes temporary files so that your drive remains clutter free.
• Space Reports: lets users view graphical and statistical reports of file usage and allocation.

Peer-to-Peer Remote Capability

• Remote Control: allows users to take control of any client running on a remote computer with the power to access features normally only accessible via a local client.
• Remote Management: allows users to make on-the-fly changes to client configurations and behaviors without the need to use Remote Desktop.
• Console Integration: supports direct connections to remote clients via the PerfectDisk Enterprise Console.

To Defrag or Not to Defrag an SSD

There has been a lot of discussion on whether one should or should not defrag an SSD and the consensus is in: Do not defrag your solid state drive. In fact, you can do more harm than good by performing a traditional defrag on an SSD:

Unlike HDDs, any write operation to SSD storage requires not one step, but two: an erase followed by the actual write.
SSD write performance degrades over time.
Since there is no mechanical seek time on an SSD, traditional file-based defrag really doesn’t provide any performance benefit.

Improving SSD Performance Without Wearing It Out

The new requirement for managing SSDs is a disk optimizer that identifies which drive is which – SSD or HDD – and then performs the appropriate actions for each drive.

What can provide a performance benefit to SSDs is free space consolidation. High free space fragmentation is a strong indicator that many partially full “untrimmed” blocks exist. PerfectDisk’s SSD Optimize eliminates free space fragmentation on the SSD and consolidates partially full blocks of data.

SSD Optimize for SSD Storage

PerfectDisk performs intelligent analysis automatically and utilizes sophisticated free space placement algorithms to enable peak SSD performance:

- Consolidates free space on the drive without also performing a traditional defrag.
- Identifies where the largest section of free space is located and consolidates free space in that location – regardless of whether it is at the beginning, middle, or end of the disk.

Het interessantste van recente versies vind ik persoonlijk de OptiWrite functie, wat volgens Raxco fragmentatie probeert te voorkomen door op het moment van wegschrijven bestanden handiger te plaatsen. Ik kan me voorstellen dat SSDs ook hier baat bij hebben, als fragmentatie van de vrije ruimte hiermee voorkomen kan worden.

Deze gratis upgrade geldt helaas alleen voor de Professional versie, niet voor de Home Premum versie...

In deze versie 12.5 kun je de 'auto update' functie niet meer uitzetten of blokkeren.
Voor mij een reden om deze versie van m'n harde schijf te verwijderen.
Ik hou er niet van dat software achter je rug om contact legt met een of andere hoofdsite.
Een aantal functies zijn ook uitgeschakeld in de Home Premium.
Ik weet niet waar ze mee bezig zijn bij Raxo, maar het gaat niet de goede kant op.
